The stock price fell nine percent while I was still walking through the boardroom doors.

I heard it before I saw it. Phones buzzed on the long table, one after another, like insects trapped in a jar. Shareholders crowded around screens. A woman near the window pressed her hand over her mouth. The chairman stood at the head of the table, trying to speak over the noise.

"Please. Everyone. Please sit."

"Twelve percent now," somebody shouted.

Gideon sat in his chair by the wall, a guard on each sid

  • Once Bitten, Twice Shy   CHAPTER 96: DANIEL DRAWS THE LINE

"Tortious interference," Daniel said. "Look it up."He sat at the end of a narrow conference table in a smaller room than the one we had used before, with no window and no view of the city. Beside him sat a gray-haired woman in a black suit, introduced as Priscilla Hart, Northstar's general counsel. She had a legal pad and a face like a locked door.Renata Cole sat on my left, her pen already moving. It was Saturday morning, and the building had the hollow feel of a place that belonged to people who never went home."I know the phrase," I said."Then you know what it means. Inducing a company to breach its contract with another." Daniel's voice stayed calm, but his eyes were hard. "Albrecht & Sons has an agreement with Granite Valley, which Northstar now holds. You approached Ruth Albrecht at a private industry event. You asked her to work with you.""I did.""And you want me to believe that was innocent?""I want you to believe it was a conversation." I folded my hands on the table.

  • Once Bitten, Twice Shy   CHAPTER 95: THE CHOICE THEY HAVE TO MAKE

"Page seventeen," Ruth Albrecht said. "Tell me if I'm a coward."She slid a stapled contract across a scarred oak desk in the back office of Albrecht & Sons Warehousing. It was Friday morning, and the smell of cardboard and floor wax hung in the air. Her two sons sat beside her, a tall, silent man named Karl and a shorter, rounder one named Jonas, both with their arms folded like their mother's. Renata Cole sat on my left, pen ready.I opened to page seventeen and read the highlighted paragraph.*Section 14.2. Contractor shall not, directly or indirectly, provide palletized storage or transport services to any third party within the Northern Territory without the prior written consent of Company.*"That's Granite Valley's language," Ruth said. "They assigned the whole contract to Northstar's alliance last month. I got a letter. 'Same terms, new management.'""And the Northern Territory?""Three counties. Rosa Delgado's valley is in one of them.""So you can't work with me there.""I d

  • Once Bitten, Twice Shy   CHAPTER 94: THE ANNOUNCEMENT NOBODY EXPECTED

Daniel Rusk found me before I found a seat."Elise." He crossed the Grand Salon of the Hartwell Hotel with his hand already out, in a dark suit and a smile that fit like a glove. "I hoped you'd come.""You asked for me by name.""I did." He shook my hand and held it a beat too long. "I thought you'd want to hear it in person.""Hear what?""You'll see." He released me and nodded toward the rows of gilt chairs. "Sit near the front. You'll want a good view."He walked toward the podium, and I stood with my pulse in my ears. The room was full. Two hundred people in suits and lanyards, murmuring over coffee. I recognized perhaps a dozen faces, owners of regional carriers, warehouse operators, a few executives from companies much larger than mine. Nathaniel had walked me to the door and then gone to wait in the hotel bar. *This one's yours,* he had said.I took a seat in the third row. My hands were cold. I folded them in my lap and watched.Daniel took the podium at six sharp."Thank you

  • Once Bitten, Twice Shy   CHAPTER 93: THE FIRST RECOMMENDATION

"Show me your worst week," Odile Fontaine said. She sat across from me in the tasting room of her creamery, a small woman in a white coat, with flour on her sleeve and a wheel of aged cheddar between us. Walter Brandt's recommendation had landed two days earlier. Her call came the same afternoon."My worst week?""Every business has one. I'd like to see how you talk about yours."I opened my bag and took out a thick binder. I set it on the table between the cheddar and her coffee."It's in the back," I said. "Tab seven. The failure log."Odile raised an eyebrow. She turned to the back and began to read.I had spent the night before building that binder.Nathaniel had watched me from the kitchen table. "You're including the Brandt spoilage?" he asked."All of it.""That's the worst thing that's happened to you.""It's the most important page." I printed the sheet and slid it into the sleeve. "If someone wants to know whether I can be trusted, I'd rather they read the failures than gues

"You're not driving the truck," Tessa said."I know.""You were drafting a plan to ride in the cab."I looked down at the page in my hand. She was right. I had written *Elise: ride in cab, call every thirty minutes* at the top of Wednesday's checklist before I noticed what I was doing."I could be useful," I said."You could be a passenger who answers every call and slows the driver down." She took the pen from my fingers. "Elise, if this delivery works, it needs to work because the system works. If it works because you sat beside the driver, Walter learns the wrong thing.""What does he learn?""That he can't trust the network unless you personally hold it together."I sat back in my chair. The conference room was quiet, the whiteboard still scribbled with last night's notes."You're right," I said."I usually am.""Then tell me what I should do.""Your job." She pulled a clean page toward us. "Communicate with Walter. Nothing else. I'll run the operators. Greg owns the equipment. De

  • Once Bitten, Twice Shy   CHAPTER 91: THE DELIVERY THAT FAILED

"The truck was confirmed," Tessa said. "It never left the yard."She sat beside me in the back of a taxi at eight in the morning, with her laptop open on her knees and her jaw set. I had left Nathaniel's eggs on the stove and my coat half buttoned. My hair was still wet."Walk me through it," I said."Brandt's frozen goods were due out at nine last night. Our regular carrier couldn't take them, so we booked a backup. Corrigan Haulage. Our dispatcher called them at four, got a yes, and marked the booking confirmed.""And then?""Corrigan's driver called in sick at seven. Nobody told us. The truck sat in their lot." She stared at the screen. "Brandt's dock manager waited until midnight. He called our line twice. Nobody picked up.""Why not?""Because we thought it was handled."The taxi slowed at a red light. I watched a woman push a stroller across the street, ordinary and unhurried."I wasn't reachable," I said.Tessa turned. "Don't.""My phone was off.""If your phone had been on, I'
