Chapter 1: The Coldest Winter

The scent of antiseptic and rotting flesh was a sickening cocktail that refused to leave my lungs. It clung to the back of my throat, thick and metallic, a constant reminder that life was leaking out of me.

I lay paralyzed on a rusted, blood-stained gurney in the ruins of the Oakhaven Central Infirmary. Once, this had been the most prestigious hospital in the Diamond District—a place where the elite of Oakhaven came for minor surgeries and expensive spa treatments. Now, the marble floors were cracked and stained with fluids I didn't want to identify.

Outside the frosted, shattered windows, the "City of Eternal Light" was finally dark. The skyscrapers that used to glow with the arrogance of the billionaire class were nothing but blackened skeletons silhouetted against a blood-red sky.

The apocalypse hadn't been a sudden explosion. It had been a slow, freezing rot—a virus that turned the living into hollow, ravenous things, followed by a winter that never ended. And I was at the very center of the decay.

"Is she dead yet?"

The voice hit me like a jagged blade. It was smooth, cultured, and devoid of a single ounce of humanity. It belonged to Julian, the man I had married in a cloud of white lace and expensive promises. The man I had once thought was my protector.

"Not yet. She’s stubborn. Just like her father was," a feminine voice replied.

Lydia. My stepsister. Her voice dripped with mock sympathy that made my skin crawl.

I strained my eyes, forcing my heavy lids to part just a fraction. Standing at the foot of my bed, she looked like she belonged on a fashion runway, not in a death ward. She was dressed in a pristine, white fur-lined tactical coat—an item bought with the inheritance funds I had signed over to her only months ago when the world started to crumble.

"Check her pockets," Julian commanded. His voice was cold, professional. He wasn't looking at me like a husband; he was looking at a hurdle. "The Lunar Ring has to be on her. It’s the only way to bypass the biometric scanners at the Sanctuary. Without it, we're just as stuck as the rest of these scavengers."

I felt Julian’s hands—hands that used to hold mine with feigned warmth and whispers of forever—callously rifling through my tattered, filth-streaked clothes. He didn't care that I was still breathing. He didn't care that my body was racked with fever.

His fingers hooked around the silver chain at my neck. He didn't even bother to unfreeze the clasp. He just yanked. The metal bit deep into the skin of my throat before snapping with a sharp *crack*.

He held up the ring. Its blue gemstone, usually vibrant with an inner light, looked dull and tired in the dim grey morning.

"We have it," he whispered, a predatory triumph lighting up his eyes. "The Sanctuary has enough supplies for twenty years. Filtered water, hydroponic farms, medical suites... With the rest of Oakhaven in ruins, we’ll be the new royalty, Lydia."

Lydia leaned over me then. She smelled of expensive French perfume—a scent that had no business existing in this world of ash. Her face was a mask of porcelain beauty, but her eyes were twin pits of pure malice.

"Don't look at us like that, Elena," she hissed, her breath warm against my ear. "You were always too soft for Oakhaven. You actually thought love and 'family' meant something? In this city, only gold and steel matter. You were never my sister. You were just the ladder we used to climb to the top."

"The 'Ravagers' are in the hallway," Julian said, checking his tactical watch. He didn't even glance at me as he tucked the ring into his pocket. "Let’s go. If we leave now, we can lock the main vault before the horde reaches the Diamond District. I’ve already disabled the secondary security."

"Goodbye, sister," Lydia whispered, her lips curling into a smile. "I’d say see you in hell, but I plan on living in paradise while you rot here."

They didn't just leave. Julian took a heavy, iron-framed chair from the corner and wedged it firmly under the door handle, trapping me inside. He knew the glass was too thick for me to break, and the door was too heavy for a dying woman to move.

I was helpless. A bite from one of the *Stalkers*—the faster, more vicious evolved creatures—had left my left leg a blackened mess of necrotic tissue. The infection was climbing. I could hear them now—the heavy, rhythmic thud of something inhuman dragging its weight down the corridor.

*Thump. Drag. Thump. Drag.*

The door groaned. The wood began to splinter as the creatures outside caught the scent of my failing life. I looked up at the water-stained ceiling, my vision blurring with tears of pure, molten rage.

I had been such a fool. I had protected them. I had used my father’s connections to get Julian his seat on the board. I had given Lydia everything she asked for. I had ignored every warning my father ever gave me about the "vultures who wear silk suits."

Now, my father was dead in an "accident" I now knew Julian had caused, my wealth was gone, and I was being served as a final meal to the monsters of the night.

*If I could go back...* I screamed in the silence of my mind. The rage was so hot it felt like it was cauterizing my wounds. *I wouldn't just survive. I would be the monster they fear. I would strip them of everything. I would watch them beg for the very scraps they denied me.*

The door splintered. A clawed, grey hand—long and skeletal—burst through the wood, inches from my face. The screech that followed was the sound of my death.

Then, a sound that didn't belong in a world of screams echoed in the very center of my skull.

**[DING!]**

A semi-transparent, neon-blue screen flickered into existence, hovering in the air above my dying eyes. It pulsed with a rhythmic light.

**[Life Force Depleting... 3%... 2%...]**

**[Initiating Chronos-Shift: 18 Months.]**

The world didn't just go dark. It shattered like a thousand sheets of ice. The sound of the monsters, the smell of the rot, and the biting, soul-deep cold of the infirmary evaporated into a blinding white light.

The last thing I heard was the System’s cold, mechanical voice—a sound more beautiful than any music:

**[Welcome back, Host. The countdown to the end begins... now.]**
