Chapter 2

Author: Thought Bubble
[Gideon's POV]

I narrowed my eyes slightly. Of course I'd kept the paperweight—it was a constant reminder that Winona still owed me a blood debt.

If the empress weren't coming to inspect the city tomorrow and had banned all blades in advance, my first instinct would've been to cut Winona down the moment I saw her.

At my silence, Winona assumed she'd hit the mark. She smiled to herself, looking smug and satisfied. "You're only being so harsh because you're mad I haven't visited you in five years, but I know you still think about me and love me. I bet you can't wait to crawl into my bed tonight.

"I'm beautiful enough to bring kingdoms to their knees and practically a goddess in the flesh, yet I still ended up in your hands. You really are blessed, Gideon."

"Get out!" I snapped, my voice cracking like a whip. I shoved her straight out of my tent.

"That armor looks surprisingly good on you," she said. Her smile turned playful, almost teasing. "If you really miss me that badly, I can give you the chance to share my bed tonight."

My gaze turned cold as I watched her saunter off with her guards, completely unbothered. I turned to Tom and said, "If she dares to come here again, deal with her under military law. It doesn't matter if she lives or dies."

That night, I sent my most trusted officers out to keep a close watch on the movements of the Horindean forces. I had to make sure nothing would go wrong during the empress' city inspection.

Only a few newly reassigned sentries were left standing guard outside my tent.

When Winona arrived with Shane in tow, I was in the middle of reviewing the border defense map. She let out a smug little laugh, wearing a look that practically said, "I knew it."

"Gideon, you left your lamp burning late to lure me here in the middle of the night. Is it because you're trying to cozy up to me?" She sighed in mock helplessness. "You really don't have to scheme this hard. Since I've already agreed to marry you, I won't go back on my word."

I ignored her. That probably made her feel embarrassed, because her tone turned sharp and impatient. "Gideon! Enough with this act. You were so cold to me in the day, yet here you are, leaving a light on late into the night to draw me in.

"It's all because you want my body, right? You think that once you've had me and the deed is done, you can use that to lock down my heart."

My stomach lurched, and I nearly gagged from disgust. I was just about to call for someone to drag her out when I remembered I'd already sent all my confidants out.

"You're the princess of a county, yet your brain is filled with nothing but filth. You must be sick in the head," I said, sneering. Then, in an ice-cold voice, I snapped, "Get out!"

"How dare you!" Winona's face flushed red, and her chest heaved with rage. "I was kind enough to bring Shane to meet you, yet you don't appreciate it at all. You two will be the people I rely on most in the future. Aren't you going to give your brother-in-arms a proper greeting?"

She wanted me, a border general, to give a musician from an enemy nation a proper greeting?

How absurd!

When I didn't move, Shane Lodge strolled forward, bringing a five-year-old boy with him. He drawled, "So you're Gideon? You really do have a fine face."

His gaze, carrying a faint, vicious edge, swept over me. "No wonder Her Highness loses sleep over you."

As he spoke, he stepped closer, reaching out to clap a hand on my shoulder.

I caught a glimpse of a blade hidden up his sleeve. On instinct, I pulled back. Before I could do anything else, Shane dropped to the ground ahead of me with a thud.

He cried out in pain and looked up at me. "Gideon, if you don't like me, I can just leave Her Highness. But why draw a knife on me and cut my hand?"

Winona's face turned pale. She hurried to cradle his injured hand, then lifted his head to glare at me, her eyes blazing with rage. "How dare you, Gideon! I'll have your head if Shane's hand is ruined!"

I let out a cold laugh and didn't bother answering.

The young boy suddenly burst into loud sobs and rushed over, pummeling my leg with his fists. "You nasty man! You stole my mother and hurt my father! I'll beat you to death! Just die already!"

"Enough of this!" I flung him aside.

  • Once Her Betrothed, Now Her Judge   Chapter 11

[Third Person POV]The memory of breaking through the siege three years ago rose unbidden in the empress' mind. Countless soldiers had stood beside Gideon, all of whom had died under enemy blades to protect her.She remembered a cheerful young female general whose final words were, "Your Majesty, go on ahead. I've got all those enemy troops surrounded by myself, heh."She remembered an old veteran, riddled with arrows yet still standing straight. "Your Majesty, I still want to fight for our country and expand to new frontiers."She remembered a plump female soldier, whose dream was to be as beautiful as a courtesan in full finery, yet whose face had been burned beyond recognition in the flames of war.She remembered…The empress forced back her tears and gave an immediate order to build a monument to the fallen in the heart of the borderlands. The names and deeds of every soldier who had died in battle were to be carved into the stone, so that generations to come would honor them

[Third Person POV]"General Ward used himself as a target, drawing our arrows to wipe the enemy out." The commanding officer was already incoherent from his tears. "I once asked him whether he was afraid, facing tens of thousands of enemies ahead alone."He said that he had nothing to fear with a million arrows covering him. But when we finally ran out of arrows, no further messages ever came from him…"Aurum Hall was silent for a long, long time. Only the occasional sighs and muffled sobs rose and fell in the stillness."Court is dismissed. I am… tired," the empress said.…On the other side of the palace, Winona was locked up in the imperial prison."Gideon, please forgive me. You'll always be my husband; we'll never be apart again."She curled up in a dark cell, her eyes bloodshot as she manically carved words into the wall. The words "I'm sorry" covered an entire wall. She had no tools, so she dug into the stone with her bare fingers. All ten fingertips had been scraped do

  • Once Her Betrothed, Now Her Judge   Chapter 9

[Gideon's POV]The empress said, "General Ward, I am in my prime. I can ride into battle with you."I looked at the scholarly, dignified empress practically itching to join the fight, and hurried to find the right words. "Your Majesty, I'm sure you have the courage to stand alone against thousands of men. But these barbarians are nothing worth troubling your divine might over."I calmly issued my orders, and the soldiers hidden in ambush all around us surged out to counterattack. Very quickly, the enemy cavalry's momentum shattered, and their losses mounted horribly.Winona stared blankly as things played out and murmured, "So you really are a general. How much suffering have you gone through all these years?"Thinking of how she'd let herself be played for a fool by a spy, only to give up a true hidden gem, she slapped herself hard across the face several times. The sounds of battle raged on for a full day and night. The entire field became a river of blood.Facing the never-en

  • Once Her Betrothed, Now Her Judge   Chapter 8

[Gideon's POV]Winona lifted her gaze, her eyes full of guilt as she looked at me. She said, "I'm sorry, Gideon. I didn't know. This has nothing to do with me. I'm a victim who was lied to as well."I met her eyes coldly and took a stack of papers that one of my trusted aides handed over. "Your Highness, there's a lot you don't know. Take a look at this."She took it, confused. The moment she looked through the letters, she froze. "H-How can this be…"The empress scoffed at Winona's expression. "You boast about your great contributions to the realm, yet you've been intimately involved with a spy from an enemy nation for five years. Is that your so-called loyalty?"Winona simply couldn't believe it, but every stroke of ink on every letter was painfully familiar to her. The letter contained all the military and civilian secrets Shane had funneled to the Horindean generals; there were even records of several city massacres he'd planned. She grabbed the barely-breathing Shane by the

  • Once Her Betrothed, Now Her Judge   Chapter 7

[Gideon's POV]In that instant, grief and fury nearly ripped Winona apart. She cried, "Your Majesty, Gideon and I have long since been engaged. We are deeply in love, and we swore never to part, not even in death. If you now tear us apart, won't that make the people in the realm lose faith in you?"With every single word that fell from Winona's lips, the faces of her people behind her went a shade paler. By the time she finished, they had already edged several yards away, each one desperate to distance themselves from her."Your Highness, please don't say any more…" Shane tugged hard at her sleeve, but she slapped him so viciously that he went sprawling to the ground."Why are you stopping me, you worthless thing? Do you want me to lose a husband with a general's rank?" she barked. She'd put all her strength into that slap; Shane's head slammed heavily against the city wall's bricks. Instantly, there was blood everywhere."Your Highness, it hurts so much…" He looked utterly pitif

  • Once Her Betrothed, Now Her Judge   Chapter 6

[Gideon's POV]A hush fell over the city wall. In the next second, everyone dropped to their knees in unison. The empress herself was conducting an inspection, and all weapons were strictly forbidden.Winona suddenly remembered that decree. Her hands shook, and the sword she held clattered to the ground. A secret wave of relief washed over her. If she'd swung even a second faster, she and all her people would've been branded with treason."Why would Her Majesty suddenly inspect the border?" she thought while straightening her clothes in a daze to welcome the empress.Shane seemed to read her mind and reassured her, saying, "The frontier's been peaceful for years now, and the Horindeans have gone quiet. Her Majesty must be here to commend you for your governance, Your Highness."If you wish to marry Gideon, you can always ask for an imperial edict. With a marriage personally bestowed by the empress, no one would dare gossip, even if he once had some affair with another."Heartache
