Chapter 17

Author: Lean
At the boarding gate, Sydney spotted Marcus immediately. He dressed casually but looked crisp and clean, with a tall, graceful build and strikingly handsome features. He was scanning the crowd too, and their eyes met at just the right moment.

Even after all these years, Marcus still looked briefly stunned at the sight of Sydney's bare, makeup-free face. He quickly crossed the space between them and took her backpack. Then his gaze swept over her delicate, palm-sized face once more.

His physician's instincts kicked in as he asked, "You didn't sleep well in the hospital, did you?"

"A little," Sydney admitted.

A few days ago, a new patient had moved into the next bed—a sweet older lady whose snoring was loud enough to rattle windows.

When Sydney boarded the plane, she was surprised to find her seat had been upgraded to first class.

Marcus noticed her confusion and raised an eyebrow with a smirk. "Thought you could use a proper nap. Since this trip's basically unpaid labor, the le

Sydney was certain Julian still had some sense of decency left in him. Otherwise, he wouldn't have stopped at just a few kisses.Even so, she couldn't keep testing his patience. "If I… if I call you one more time, that'll do, right?"After all, this was the same man who had once kissed her senseless through a closed door.Julian nodded. "Mm."Sydney decided there was only one way out—run for it. "Jules," she blurted, her voice flat and stripped of emotion. The word came out rushed and awkward.A knock landed on the bathroom door, followed by Raymond's pointed voice. "Jules? You've been washing your hands for a while in there. Dinner's getting cold."Sydney froze, mortified. If there had been a hole in the floor, she would have gladly crawled into it. She shot Julian a glare and tried to pull free from his arms."Coming," he answered casually, not loosening his hold. His gaze stayed locked on her. "That didn't sound sincere."'So demanding,' she thought while panic flared. Aga

Julian's throat tightened when the teasing spark in Sydney's eyes flickered up at him. He had been holding back, aware that Agatha and Raymond were still in the house. But in that moment, his restraint gave way."Hm?" His voice came out low and drawn, an arched brow accompanying the sound. "What are you up to?"He spoke lazily as he turned off the tap and reached for a soft cotton towel. Unhurried, he dried their hands—hers first, then his own. The small act felt far too intimate. The tension that had hardened his features moments ago was gone. He looked as he always did, casual and unbothered but with a glint of amusement in his eyes. A dangerous warning if there ever was one.Sydney's ears turned hot. Sensing trouble, she tried to pull her hand free. "Nothing. You should go. Your grandmother and Raymond are still—"Before she could finish, his newly dried hand slipped around her waist, drawing her close and pressing her back gently against the marble counter. Her words died. Something like eye muscle spasms would have been Sydney's specialty.Raymond coughed into his fist. "No need. I'm fine. Just haven't been sleeping well lately."He quickly turned to Agatha, eager to change the subject. "Agatha, your ankle must really hurt, huh? Pretty bad, right?"Agatha pretended not to hear. 'These two little brats!'On the other hand, Sydney looked genuinely worried. "Are you sure you're—""I'm fine, I'm fine!" Agatha caught Sydney's cold fingers, chilled from holding the ice pack for so long, and patted them warmly."Sydney, it's dreadfully boring living here alone. And now that I've hurt my foot, I can't even go out." She paused, looking a little embarrassed. "Could you stay with me for a while?"Sydney froze. It wasn't an unreasonable request. Delta Mansion was Julian's place, and most of the household staff were people she already knew.Still, she hesitated. "Wouldn't it be better to ask Julian to come back and keep you company instead?""Him?" Agatha g

Sydney didn't answer right away. 'Delta Mansion? That's Julian's place. So why is Raymond the one calling me?'Finally, she asked, "What's wrong? I'm at Seraph Villa. Just finished treating your mother."Raymond's voice came through the line. "Mm, I know."Fortunately, she had already treated his mother. If anyone found out he'd dragged his mother's doctor away mid-session to help Julian, they'd string him up.He could imagine the headline: [Unfilial Son Interrupts Mom's Treatment to Save Someone Else's Grandmother.*He hurried to explain. "It's Julian's grandmother. She twisted her ankle coming down the stairs. It's swollen, but she refuses to go to the hospital. She's icing it for now."Sydney didn't hesitate. An injury like that might be minor, or it could worsen fast. Either way, she'd rather check it herself. Even without Julian's connection, Agatha had always been warm and kind to her. Sydney was genuinely fond of the old woman.…When she hung up, Raymond turned toward t

Julian gave a polite nod to the business partners, but his gaze shifted before he could respond. Across the hall, a young woman stepped out of the private room opposite him, and a man followed close behind her.He gestured for Elliot to escort the clients out, then turned and strode toward Sydney. She was busy slipping on her coat and didn't notice him until his shadow fell across her. Looking up while adjusting her collar, she blinked in mild surprise.James, well aware of Julian's jealousy, wisely kept quiet. He murmured a courteous goodbye and headed toward the parking lot, giving them some space.Sydney's face brightened when she saw Julian. "You're here too?"The tightness in Julian's chest eased instantly, and he smirked. "What, you two can come here but I can't?"'So sour.' Even with her slow reaction time, Sydney could sense the jealousy a mile away. She looked up at his perfectly styled hair, and an impulse flickered through her.She reached out to pat his head lightly.

At noon, James had business near the clinic. When he finished, he decided to invite Sydney to lunch so they could return to Seraph Villa together afterward. She hadn't expected Charlotte to show up that day. By all rights, she should have been the one treating Charlotte and her grandmother to lunch. But with James already waiting, it didn't feel right to bring friends and elders along to what was clearly a private meal.Charlotte caught her hesitation immediately and smiled. "You squeezed my grandmother in at the last minute. I should be the one buying lunch. But since you've already got plans, we'll call it a rain check, yeah?""Okay." Sydney nodded with a smile, and the three of them left the clinic together. As they turned the corner, she spotted James standing a few paces from the nurses' station.Autumn had deepened. He wore a dark gray trench coat that made his tall, lean frame even more striking. His refined features naturally drew attention, though he lacked the cold, aris
