Chapter 504

Author: Lean
At noon, James had business near the clinic. When he finished, he decided to invite Sydney to lunch so they could return to Seraph Villa together afterward.

She hadn't expected Charlotte to show up that day. By all rights, she should have been the one treating Charlotte and her grandmother to lunch. But with James already waiting, it didn't feel right to bring friends and elders along to what was clearly a private meal.

Charlotte caught her hesitation immediately and smiled. "You squeezed my grandmother in at the last minute. I should be the one buying lunch. But since you've already got plans, we'll call it a rain check, yeah?"

"Okay." Sydney nodded with a smile, and the three of them left the clinic together.

As they turned the corner, she spotted James standing a few paces from the nurses' station.

Autumn had deepened. He wore a dark gray trench coat that made his tall, lean frame even more striking. His refined features naturally drew attention, though he lacked the cold, aris

The more Raymond thought about it, the more restless he became. He shot to his feet and tossed out a single sentence. "Those two upstairs are your responsibility."Then he strode out. The drowsiness vanished, and the fatigue evaporated. Only one thought remained. 'Sydney is my sister. That gentle, obedient child. The girl who later learned to walk on eggshells, she is my sister…'He knew exactly how that old Sterling witch had treated her.She was smart. She learned how to soften her tone, how to say what people wanted to hear, how to placate that old witch. When she had to, she even learned how to deceive her.Even so, her life over the years had been nothing but misery. She should have grown up in the Hutton family, cherished like a princess. Instead, she endured years of hardship. How had that happened?Setting aside the nine years she spent beside Julian, there were still more than ten years before that. More than 3,000 days and nights. How many decades does a person even get

Over the phone, Sydney noticed nothing amiss. Her thoughts were fixed entirely on Eliana's condition."Diana, I wanted to ask you something. Can we get the antidote today? I just tried calling Raymond, but his line was busy."Over the years, Diana had imagined countless versions of the moment she would find Vee again. She pictured herself laughing uncontrollably, or breaking down in tears. Yet now, with every sign pointing to the voice on the other end of the line as the younger sister she had searched for all these years, she felt only flustered. She was almost afraid. Afraid she might frighten her. Afraid she might ruin this long-lost reunion before it had truly begun.Diana cleared her throat, forcing down the sting rising in her eyes, and chose her words with care. "The antidote is probably no longer with Megan. But…""Megan?" Sydney froze. "This has something to do with her?"How did Megan suddenly enter the picture? Penelope's hatred made sense. That had always been expecte

Penelope had not interacted much with Diana before, so she did not immediately grasp the meaning behind the words.Meanwhile, Megan understood at once. Her heart lurched, but she forced the panic down. She pretended not to understand and waited for Penelope to respond.Only then did Penelope finally catch the implication in Diana's words. The eldest miss of the Hutton family was sharp and perceptive. Even without knowing every detail, she had already seen through the situation and realized that Megan stood behind it.But Megan held leverage over her. Penelope had no choice but to feign ignorance. "Diana, what do you mean by that?"Diana did not spare her another glance. Her gaze, calm yet oppressive, settled squarely on Megan."She didn't hear anything in my words," Diana said evenly. "But you did. Didn't you?""Diana…" Megan feared her from the depths of her heart. She clenched her hand, forced a smile onto her face, and said, "I don't understand what you mean either."Diana's

A flicker of joy stirred in Penelope's chest. She truly believed it was some sort of gift prepared for her. After all, even a property deed amounted to little more than a thin booklet. She stepped forward briskly, smiling as she picked it up and opened it. When she drew out the contents and saw what they were, her expression froze."What's this?"Seeing her reaction, Megan finally felt a hint of relief.'This idiot. How could Raymond possibly treat her any differently?'Yet in the very next second, she froze as well."This call log," Raymond said lazily, the corners of his mouth lifting into something that was not quite a smile. "You really don't remember it?"He fixed his gaze on Penelope and spoke slowly, each word deliberate. "Then surely you remember a man named Thomas Setford."At the sound of that name, Penelope showed no immediate reaction, but a cold sheen of sweat broke out across Megan's back.Eliana had been poisoned yesterday. And today, Raymond had already traced

Julian knew her too well. When it came to herself, she was never careful. At times, she even leaned toward self-destruction.But the child in her womb was different. That child was the family she had longed for.Sydney did listen. "All right. I promise.""Look at this number." Julian handed her his phone. A string of digits filled the screen.Sydney glanced at it and frowned. "Whose number is this?"She recognized only Julian's and Tiffany's numbers."Penelope." Julian spoke the name without hesitation. "The day after Thomas was released from prison, he received a call from her. They talked for almost 30 minutes."Sydney froze. She had never suspected Penelope, not even once.Penelope held no grudge against Eliana. During this period, Sydney had even deliberately kept her distance from her.So why? Before her emotions could swell, Julian continued in a calm voice, "I already called Raymond. He's on his way back to Seraph Villa."Penelope was staying with the Hutton family. I

At that point, no further explanation was needed. Florence immediately understood what her daughter intended to do. Diana did not merely plan to shatter Adeline's illusion. She also intended to slap her publicly.Florence was usually reserved rather than cold, and certainly not soft-hearted. After hearing that, she raised no objection. She only offered a calm reminder. "Don't let this drag Sydney into it."Adeline was not an easy person to deal with. If she lost control, she might turn around and target Sydney instead.Diana had already thought it through. "Don't worry. I know what I'm doing."Florence remained uneasy. "Any news from James about the paternity test?""If there is, you'll be the first to know."Diana understood her mother's anxiety. She shared it herself and had been waiting for the result just as long.Worry, however, would not speed anything up. The samples had been sent overseas, which alone took a full day. Only three days had passed. A delay was perfectly nor
