Chapter 4: I know exactly what to do.

Caroline

The house is too quiet, cold. I never realized how silent it can be. For six years, the mansion was always alive.

The sounds of Ariana’s laughter, Grey’s footsteps and low chuckle, the maids moving around, the television singing kids’ songs while my daughter giggled and watched with so much interest.

The house was always full of life, but now, there is nothing. Just silence—the kind that presses against my heart and makes it hard to breathe.

I sit curled up on the living room sofa with a blanket wrapped around me. The reporters are gone; Grey left last night and never came back. The gates are closed.

The world has moved on to the next piece of gossip, while I sit here, wondering where it all went wrong.

My life shatters before my eyes, and I have no idea what I have done to deserve it.

My gaze drifts to the front door, hoping he will somehow appear there and look at me like he used to since I married him.

But the door remains closed, no sound of his footsteps echoing.

A sob threatens to escape my throat. I force it back; crying won't change anything. It won't make him love me or undo the scandal that threw me into this mess.

“Caroline.”

I look up to see Ginger, my maid, standing nearby. She has a pitiful look on her face. She is old enough to be my mother—older even. She has worked for us since I married Grey, and she is the closest person I have.

Ginger is kind, with gentle eyes. Tonight, she looks especially heartbroken—for me, no doubt.

“Would you like anything to eat?”

I shake my head. “I'm not hungry.”

She sits beside me anyway. For several minutes, neither of us speaks. Then she gently pats my hands.

“Men can be foolish.”

A bitter laugh escapes me. “That’s one way to put it.”

Her eyes soften.

“Whatever happens, you are stronger than you think.”

Am I? Because right now, my insides are busy shattering.

Those words almost make me cry again because I feel stupid, used.

Ginger squeezes my hand before standing. “You should get some rest.”

I nod. “I will. Thanks.”

The moment she leaves, I wander aimlessly through the house—studying everything as if this is my first time here.

Room after room, I check it all, like a ghost. I don't even know what I'm looking for.

Maybe memories, maybe answers. My mind is blank.

When I enter Grey’s office, I feel like I’ve entered a stranger’s personal space.

My gaze roams the entire place—from the walls to every piece of furniture. Unable to stop, I trail my fingers over them, feeling each texture against my skin.

I go over to the big table. My eyes linger over the stacks of papers. The big chair on the table is empty. His cologne fills my nose—a familiar scent I used to love.

As I stare longer, something catches my eye—a small card on top of a large book sitting on the table.

I frown; it doesn't belong there. I pick it up, and my stomach immediately twists.

A hotel key card.

My fingers tighten around it. What the hell is it doing in my husband’s office? It’s strange.

The name of the city’s most expensive hotel is printed on it. I stare, trying to make sense of it.

I tell myself it doesn't mean anything, but deep down, I know a hotel card doesn’t just appear out of nowhere.

It belongs to Grey for a reason I don't want to believe right now.

My pulse begins to race. Then I see it—a reservation slip underneath.

Booked for tonight, suite 204.

Two guests. Not for a business meeting. Just two guests.

The room spins in my vision. I clutch the big table to steady myself as my legs give way.

I stare at the card longer than I should because, deep down, I know Grey wasn’t planning on coming home tonight. This was booked days ago—before the scandal, before our argument.

He’s already made plans with her—plans that don’t include me. Plans meant to slowly ruin my life while I remain oblivious.

A tear slides down my cheek. I don't bother wiping it. Then a loud, anguished cry bursts from my lips. The sound cuts through the silence of the office.

I cry until I feel like I’ve emptied every drop of water from my body. Hours later, I'm still here—thinking, wondering, crying.

The room gets darker and colder.

Every passing car makes my heart race. Every set of headlights makes me look toward the gate.

Because part of me still hopes this isn’t true—that he’s coming home tonight to make things right. That he’s finally realized his mistake.

As I sit there, I hear the honking of a car pulling into the driveway.

Grey. My husband.

Hope blooms in me, despite everything, I rush out of the office into the living room. Standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling glass, I watch.

The car stops, and the driver steps out. Every hope that might have risen in my chest dies instantly.

Because the man entering the house is not my husband—it’s his PA, Mr. Thompson.

My heart sinks.

The front door opens before I even reach it. He steps in, looking expressionless.

“Mrs. Grand.”

I already know. The disappointment tugs at my heart, along with heartbreak and humiliation.

“Where is he?”

He clears his throat. He looks away for a second, then fixes his gaze on me again.

“Mr. Grand won't be coming home tonight.”

The words cut through me, ripping inside. I force myself to stay standing, even as every part of me shakes with rage.

“Why?”

“He has an important business meeting out of the state.”

Business meeting—the lie is so obvious it almost makes me laugh because I know exactly where my husband is.

Hotel. Room 204. Two guests.

My chest aches. Mr. Thompson continues, offering various excuses, but I don't hear a single one.

And the fact that I'm standing here waiting while he’s with another woman, doing God knows what.

After making sure I understand, Mr. Thompson bids me goodbye and leaves.

I stand there, thinking, contemplating.

And right now, I know exactly what to do.

Going back inside, I throw on a gown and step out of the house, clutching the hotel card tightly in my fingers.

Employees come and go. Executives impress me, disappoint me, resign, get fired.None of them occupy my thoughts after they leave my office.Caroline Sawyer just walked out, and somehow, I can’t seem to return my attention to the report sitting in front of me.I pick up my pen. Put it down. Reach for my laptop. Open the report. Read the same paragraph twice.Nothing registers. I lean back in my chair and close my eyes. Her voice comes back to me.“Good morning, Mr. Dempson.”My eyes open. That voice. Something about it bothered me the moment she spoke. Not because it was unpleasant.Because it wasn’t. It was familiar. I don’t know her. I’ve never met her before today. Yet the moment she walked into this office, something inside me reacted before my mind could make sense of it.I stare at the clo

  • Once a rejected wife, now a billionaire’s obsession    Chapter 62: What the hell was that?

Caroline I wake up before my alarm. For several seconds, I lie still, staring at the ceiling. Then reality comes rushing back. My new job. Dempson Holdings. Neil Dempson. I sit up slowly. For the first time in weeks, getting out of bed doesn’t feel like another battle. I have somewhere to be. Something to do. A reason to leave the apartment. My hand instinctively moves toward my stomach. The gesture still feels strange. There’s a baby growing inside me. A baby whose father doesn’t even know I exist. I push the thought away before it can ruin the morning. Today, I need to focus on myself. After getting dressed, I stand in front of the mirror and study my reflection. Professional. That’s what I need to look like. Not the woman who spent the last few days terrified of her future. Not the divorced woman who cried over a failed interview. Not the pregnant woman carrying a secret she doesn’t know how to handle. Just Caroline Sawyer. An employee. I grab my bag and leave. By the

  • Once a rejected wife, now a billionaire’s obsession    Chapter 61: Challenge accepted

Caroline I stare at the phone long after the call ends, the apartment is silent, too silent. Not the suffocating silence I've grown used to these past few days, it’s the kind of silence that follows life-changing news. “ Carrie.….” Mia’s voice sounds far away and i blink. “What did he say?” I lower the phone slowly, still trying to convince myself i didn't imagine the conversation. “ I got the job.” For a second, Mia doesn't react, then, “You what?” “ I've been given the job Mia.” She lets out a scream loud enough to shake the apartment before throwing her arms around me. “ I told you!” she practically yells, “ I told you something better would come.” A shaky laugh escapes me. Three days ago, i was sitting on the bathroom floor staring at two pink lines. Today, i have a job. The contrast is so absurd I don't know whether to cry or laugh. Mia pulls back, both hands gripping my shoulders, “What exactly did he say?” “He said…..” i replay the conversation in my head, “He re

Caroline Silence settles over the apartment, not the comfortable type, the type that presses against my heart until breathing becomes difficult. Mia continues staring at me, as though waiting for me to laugh and admit this is all some terrible joke. Ever since I found out I’m pregnant three days ago, I've not found it in me to explain to them. Shame overwhelms me. Where am I even going to start from? The idea alone sounds crazy. Yet here we are, I have no other choice than to spill it. Mia’s voice comes out carefully, “You said you had a one-night stand with a stranger.” I nod once. “And now, you are pregnant.” I nod again. She lowers herself onto the couch in the living room. “For God's sake Carrie.” “ I know, it’s stupid.” “No, I don't think you do.” She runs her hands over her face, “Start from the beginning.” I sink onto the armchair opposite her, with my hands folded gently on my lap. “It was the night of Grey and Callie’s wedding. I couldn't handle the pain,

  • Once a rejected wife, now a billionaire’s obsession    Chapter 59: Just one call.

Neil Three days. Three days have passed, and Caroline Sawyer’s file still sits on my desk. I should have filed it away the moment I decided to reinstate Vanessa. Instead, every morning I move it aside. Every afternoon, I find myself reading it again, even though it makes no sense. I don't dwell on people I don't hire, and I certainly don't think about a candidate after rejecting them — yet here I am, again. I flip open the file. Caroline Sawyer. Twenty-six, formerly married. Strong organizational skills. Event coordination. Public relations. I know every word by now, but still… Something about the name refuses to leave me alone. Sawyer. Why does it sound so familiar? I close the file and lean back in my chair. My office is silent except for the faint hum of the city beyond the glass walls. I run my hand over my jaw. “Where have I heard the name before?” No answer—only that irritating feeling sitting at the back of my mind. I pull the laptop closer. One search, that’s all

Neil By the time I leave the office, my head feels like it’s carrying the weight of the entire company. Twelve hours, three board meetings, two investor calls, and one reinstatement letter I regret signing. I loosen my tie as the elevator descends toward the underground parking garage. Usually, work clears my mind; today, however, it only made everything worse. Caroline Sawyer’s file has remained on my desk all day. I could even find it in me to trash it. I keep getting a nagging feeling, one I don't understand yet. Every time I look at the file, irritation settles somewhere beneath my ribs. Not because of her—because she should have been here tomorrow. Instead, Vanessa will be walking back into the company on Monday. I grip the steering wheel a little tighter, and the engine of my Lamborghini growls to life. The drive home is quiet except for the conflicting thoughts racing through my head. For once, Damon doesn't call. Xander doesn't send his stupid text messages or voice n

Caroline The cloth I was holding a moment ago slips to the floor. I don’t bother picking it up. My hands tremble. Ariana is our daughter, and she died of cancer, so why is he saying I should have disappeared with her? "What are you talking about?” I ask, a drop of wetness sliding down my cheek

Caroline Grey steps out of the car and walks toward the house. His movements are slow and deliberate, as if he's weighing each step. Caroline The first thing I hear is screaming—many voices. My eyes flicker open. The big bedroom is empty, and the other side of the bed is cold too. My fingers touch the sheet beside me, and a small frown forms on my face. Grey must have left early. Again. Part of me feels disappointed, but
