Chapter 3

作者: Goodtale
In the car, Zoe suddenly reached over and squeezed Luke's thigh. "Not bad. You've been working out."

With a sharp screech of tires, the car swerved violently across the road. My shoulder slammed hard against the door panel, the sudden whiplash making me sick to my stomach.

Luke grabbed Zoe's hand and said hoarsely, "Don't touch me."

A surge of pure anger hit me. "Focus on the road!" I snapped, but neither of them paid me the slightest attention.

Not one to back down, Zoe reached over with her other hand to pinch him again. The two of them went back and forth, causing the car to repeatedly fishtail across the highway lanes.

Suddenly, Zoe licked Luke's hand and said tauntingly, "Try stopping me again!"

Luke shuddered.

The next second, the car shot across the yellow line and collided head-on with an oncoming bus.

The impact threw me forward, my forehead smashing violently against the back of the front seat. Blood instantly streamed down my face, blinding my left eye.

A high-pitched, deafening ringing filled my ears, followed closely by Luke's terrified roar.

"Zoe!"

Through a haze of red, I saw Luke running out like a madman with Zoe in his arms.

I was trapped in the mangled car for four hours before the fire department finally arrived. They sawed open the door and sent me to the hospital.

I needed six stitches in my head. Once they were done, the nurse asked for a family member to sign the paperwork.

I called Luke three times. Just as the call was about to go into voicemail, he finally picked up.

"Zoe was traumatized. She needs to stay in the hospital for observation today. Whatever it is, we'll talk about it later. Just stop calling me already!" he roared impatiently.

The line went dead with a sharp click.

The nurse shot me a look of profound pity. I said nothing and signed the form myself.

The next day, Luke showed up. His eyes swept over the gauze wrapped around my head, but he looked right through them, completely unfazed.

He grabbed my arm and tried to drag me out.

"Go tell Zoe you're fine. She's been crying nonstop ever since she heard you needed stitches."

The movement pulled at my scalp. Pain shot through me, and everything went dark for a moment. I tried to push him away.

"The doctor said I have to stay in bed."

He acted like he hadn't heard a thing, his grip not loosening in the slightest.

"You need to explain things to Zoe first. She hasn't slept a wink since the accident."

With a sudden, forceful yank, he wrenched me completely off the mattress.

My feet gave out, and the back of my head struck the floor. The impact felt like a sledgehammer driving straight into my skull, sending a sickening shockwave all the way down my spine to my tailbone.

Everything went pitch black.

I woke up to find myself surrounded by doctors and nurses.

Luke was standing at the very back. The first thing he said was, "Can you stop pretending to faint every single time? You made Zoe cry again."

His voice was laced with barely suppressed annoyance.

"If you don't want to explain yourself, just say so. What's the point of throwing yourself on the floor?"

I slowly sat up. Blood had traveled back up the IV catheter on the back of my hand.

"Let's break up."

Luke froze for a second, then his voice suddenly shot up an octave.

"Can you not make a scene at a time like this? Zoe is still crying and under observation right now."

With that, he stormed out and slammed the door heavily behind him.

Not long after, the door opened again.

Zoe came in, dragging Luke back by the ear.

"Mia, are you mad because he saved me and not you?"

She kicked him in the shin.

"Apologize to Mia! She's your girlfriend, so how could you just abandon her? Swear that from now on, no matter what happens, you'll protect her first!"

A week later, I received an email from the HR department.Luke had submitted his resignation. After handing over his work, he left Wenbrook. The email was sent to everyone, and the wording was formal and businesslike. It only said that he was leaving for personal reasons, and that he was grateful for all the years of working alongside everyone. No one knew where he had gone. His WhatsApp profile picture changed from a selfie to the default gray silhouette, and his Instagram account was emptied of all posts.Mutual friends who occasionally brought him up all said they couldn't reach him anymore. His phone number had become disconnected, and any messages sent to him went completely unanswered.Three months later, late one night, my phone vibrated on the nightstand.I opened my eyes. The screen showed a number I hadn't saved, but I knew exactly whose it was.Zoe's voice rushed out from the receiver, urgent and thick with tears."Mia, Luke's gone."I leaned against the balcony ra

The wedding was set for the end of the month.Grayson booked an estate on the outskirts of the city. It was an old manor, its red brick walls covered in creeping ivy. The tea olive trees in the courtyard were in full bloom. When the wind blew, tiny petals drifted down onto the lawn, spreading a layer of pale gold.We didn't invite many people—just close family and friends, no more than five or six tables in total. There was no emcee or those rowdy wedding games. I wanted to keep everything simple, and Grayson agreed without hesitation. Dad arrived a day early and took a walk around the estate. With his hands clasped behind his back, he stood gazing at the tea olive trees for a long time.Mom followed behind him, her eyes red-rimmed the whole time. She smiled at everyone she saw. But as she did, she kept reaching up to wipe the corners of her eyes. She took my hand and pressed a jewelry box into it. Inside was a pair of silver bangles. The design was old-fashioned, engraved with

Over the weekend, my father, George Cruz, brought my stepmother, Patricia Dalton, over. They arrived with arms full of sausages and pickled cabbage they'd brought all the way from our hometown. Zoe trailed right behind them, wearing a sweet, obedient smile, playing the part of the perfect, devoted daughter. "Mia, I called Mom and Dad over. It's been so long since our whole family got together."The moment Mom walked in, she took Grayson's hand and looked him up and down. Then, she pulled an envelope out of her pocket and pressed it into Grayson's hand."Honestly, I should give Mia a piece of my mind. She didn't say a single word to us about getting married. I didn't even have time to prepare a proper wedding gift," she said, her eyes reddening.Grayson helped her to a seat, saying, "It was my oversight. I'll make it up with a proper visit another day."Mom looked him up and down again, then nodded. "You're a fine, upstanding young man."Zoe came out of the kitchen carrying a p

The next morning, the doorbell rang.I opened the door to find Zoe standing there. Her eyes were rimmed with red, as if she'd been working up the tears the entire drive over. She glanced past my shoulder and spotted Grayson sitting at the dining table, reading the newspaper. She pressed her lips together and shoved the fruit she'd brought into my arms."Mia, I thought about it all night, and it's my fault for not making things clear."After following me inside, she walked straight to the dining table and sat down across from Grayson. She smoothed her hair and smiled at him. "Hello, Grayson. I'm Zoe, Mia's older sister. Since she was little, she's always come to me with everything on her mind. Even though she's married now, I still have to vet things for her."Grayson turned a page of the newspaper without looking up. "What are you vetting, exactly?"Zoe's smile didn't waver. "Like whether you're reliable or if you'd mistreat Mia."Grayson set down the newspaper and glanced at

Luke stared at the names on the page for so long that Zoe nervously tugged at his sleeve. Suddenly, he let out a harsh, grating laugh. "Mia, you'd go so far as to fake a marriage certificate just to get back at me?"He lunged forward, reaching out to rip the document from Grayson's hand.Grayson flicked his wrist smoothly, pulling the paper out of reach before Luke could even graze it. Luke's hand froze in mid-air. His voice rose in desperate certainty. "It has to be a fake. You were still discussing marriage with me this morning, so how could you possibly have gotten married to someone else by now?"Grayson slid the marriage certificate into the inner pocket of his suit jacket and replied flatly, "Mr. Nash, you're more than welcome to take a photo of the serial number and verify the state seal inside with the clerk."Zoe forced out a stiff smile. "Mia, I know you're mad at me, but you can't just marry some random guy. Do you even know him or what kind of background he has?"I

A look of helpless indulgence surfaced on Luke's face. He raised both hands in a gesture of surrender."Sorry, Mia. I promise I'll save you first next time."Then, he immediately turned to Mia and said softly, "Alright, I apologized to Mia. Now will you please go back and lie down? The doctor said you have a mild concussion and need bed rest."Zoe let out a cold snort. "That's more like it. Mia, are you still mad? If you are, I'll make him kneel right now and say sorry ten thousand times."Luke sighed helplessly. "My darling, isn't your head still hurting?"He shot me a warning look, signaling that I'd better quit it.I looked at them and slowly smiled. "No, I'm not mad anymore."Zoe's eyes lit up. "Really?"I nodded with a smile, my voice steady. "Yes, really."She let out a huge sigh of relief and let go of Luke's ear. "Don't worry, Mia. As long as I'm around, Luke will never dare do you wrong."Seven days later, Zoe and I were discharged from the hospital together. As I p
