Chapter 1

Charis' POV

The rain kept pouring, and my daughter, Joy Harrell, burned with a high fever. Her consciousness was slowly fading away.

I no longer cared about my husband, Brian Harrell, or his affair with the family doctor, Aurora Bradley. I ran out into the rain, grabbed Joy, and tried to bring her back into the villa.

The bodyguard, Paul Dugan, saw what I was doing and immediately tried to stop me.

"Mrs. Harrell, Mr. Harrell has given orders that Ms. Harrell must kneel in the rain for a full ten hours before she's allowed inside again. Another three hours remain. You cannot remove her from her post now."

However, Joy's condition was gradually worsening in my arms.

I was frantic and ran past Paul without a second thought. I yelled at him, "But Joy is having an extremely high fever, and it won't go away if she continues staying in the rain! If you make her stay out for another three more hours, she will collapse!

"Are you trying to tell me that Mr. Harrell also gave out his orders to drive us to our deaths?"

When Paul saw that Joy had already passed out in my arms, he simply let us through and didn't dare to stop us anymore. However, he called Brian, his face stern, to keep him updated on the situation.

I didn't care about him anymore and ran into the villa, pulling a thick blanket around Joy's shivering body. Then I ran to find a first-aid kit and grabbed a fever patch for her burning forehead.

Just as I was about to give her some fever meds, Brian wheeled himself into the room and said in dissatisfaction, "Joy is still young. How dare you simply administer meds to her? Are you trying to kill her?"

He then beckoned for Aurora and pointed at the unconscious Joy. "Aurora. Have a look at the kid instead."

I was skeptical, but since Aurora was indeed the family doctor and Joy was in terrible condition, I figured it wouldn't hurt for her to take a closer look.

Aurora nodded and approached Joy gently with a thermometer. After taking her temperature for six minutes and pulling out the thermometer, the reading showed a whopping 104 degrees. It was a dangerously high bout of fever.

However, Aurora simply shook the thermometer a few times before chuckling lightly. "Her body temperature is very normal. Ms. Harrell is not having a fever at all.

"Really, Mrs. Harrell, you shouldn't be indulging such a young child in her play-pretenses."

Brian had been quite worried about Joy at first, but after hearing what Aurora had to say, he was immediately consumed by rage.

"I was just teaching Joy a lesson for eating dirty food off the ground because I was worried that she would get an upset stomach, but you went and taught her how to lie to me instead to get my pity?

"Fine! Since you're oh-so-worried about her like this, Charis Olsen, you can go out and kneel in the rain for ten hours instead!"

So if Joy eating off the floor was dirty, what about Joy and me rummaging through the trash every day for food?

He kept coming up with all these stupid excuses to punish us simply because he still harbored a grudge against us for causing him to miss meeting his first love, Dorothy Tucker, for the last time.

When I first started dating Brian, I knew he still hadn't quite gotten over his first love. But when we eventually got married, he repeatedly told me that he had already severed all ties with her and would never meet her again.

We'd been very happy since our marriage, and we even had Joy together not long after.

But three years ago, Joy insisted Brian take her to the amusement park one day and made a huge fuss about it. Brian had no choice but to agree to appease her, but that choice ultimately made him break his seven-year promise to Dorothy by missing her for the last time.

Brian was overcome with agonizing grief as he wept uncontrollably.Albert didn't excuse himself to leave. He simply watched Brian break down in silence. The pain that Brian felt was nowhere close to even a fraction of the pain Charis and Joy had gone through. After Brian was done venting his emotions and finally managed to compose himself, he looked up at Albert again and asked, "Did you all know about this? Why didn't anybody tell me?"Albert hesitated again, but he eventually said, "The previous butler did try to tell you, but you fired him on the spot. We all have families to support at home too, and we can't afford to lose our jobs."Brian was left completely speechless.Because of his blatant favoritism toward Aurora, his staff regarded her as the mistress of the house rather than Charis, obeying Aurora's every command without question.Brian burst out laughing, but it soon turned into tears. This time, he didn't pin the blame on other people anymore. He knew that he'd done

Brian was both shocked and furious. "I never gave out that order! Who did?"Just as he was about to investigate the matter, he paused and turned to Albert."Who did you say wasn't able to make it?"Albert sighed again. He couldn't bear to watch Brian keep searching for someone already dead, so he finally revealed the truth."Ms. Harrell has already passed away, Mr. Harrell."You punished her by making her kneel in the heavy rain the other day, and then doled the same punishment to Mrs. Harrell afterward. By the time Mrs. Harrell was done with her punishment, Ms. Harrell had already collapsed from a high fever and was on the verge of death."Brian shuddered violently."You mean… You mean Joy hadn't been faking it? She was actually sick?"He bit his lips hard as he felt his chest ache.Albert was right. Brian had seen Joy's lips turning purple while having a seizure on the floor, but he still thought she was simply faking her illness, and that it was nothing to worry about. Bu

Aurora said, "It's all in the past now, Brian. Mrs. Harrell was just unlucky. You'd already done everything you could for her."Maybe you should forget about her now and consider me instead. Shall we just get together?"Brian didn't calm down after hearing what she said. Instead, he became even more frantic. He glared at her. "What do you mean by calling her 'unlucky'? That rope was perfectly fine when I inspected it! How could it have just snapped? Someone had to have tampered with it!"I will find out the person behind this and personally grind their bones into dust!"Brian suddenly pulled himself together and snapped into action, furiously investigating the cause of Charis' death, completely oblivious to the grim look on Aurora's face beside him.He sent Charis' body and the snapped rope away for forensic analysis while continuing to search for Joy's whereabouts. He hadn't heard from her in a couple of days, and he was getting worried. After a while, the forensic results cam

Brian grabbed Wendy by her shoulders like a madman and demanded loudly, "Tell me what's happened to Joy! What happened to her?"Wendy finally snapped out of her daze. She sighed and confessed remorsefully, "Ms. Harrell is fine, Mr. Harrell. I lied earlier. Mrs. Harrell made me lie to you."She just wanted to make you worry so that you wouldn't punish her anymore."Aurora smiled and shook her head as she continued fanning the fire."Really, Mrs. Harrell is Joy's mother after all, so how could she keep cursing her own daughter to death just for the sake of vying for your attention?"Brian cocked his eyebrow. He was displeased with Charis' actions, but since she was already dead, there was no point pursuing the matter any further. In fact, he felt relieved. It was better that everything Wendy said earlier had been nothing but a lie. That meant Joy was still alive."Find Joy and bring her back immediately. Charis is already gone. I will not let anything happen to Joy this time…"If

And so, Brian ultimately broke up with Dorothy in a heartless way. They gave each other the cold shoulder and ignored the other for years.
