Chapter 4

Author: Fierce Sleeping Dog
Early the next morning, before the sun had fully risen, a loud commotion outside my door woke me.

Mrs. Doyle had somehow gathered seven or eight relatives and neighborhood gossips.

They packed the hallway so tightly that no one could pass.

The group carried cheap wedding banners and heart-shaped stickers.

They were forcing them onto my security door and the surrounding walls.

Someone had even stuck an enormous heart-shaped "Congratulations" decal over my smart lock.

The whole display was hideous.

Mrs. Doyle sat in her wheelchair at the front of the crowd.

With her hair hanging loose, she slapped her thigh and began wailing through tears and mucus.

"Everyone, come judge this for yourselves!

"This cruel man has no conscience!"

She sobbed dramatically, performing like an award-winning actress.

"He seduced my daughter and chased after her every day, and now he's pretending nothing happened!

"He sprayed poison into my daughter's eyes because he wanted to kill her!

"My poor daughter loved him sincerely, and he played with her feelings!"

The hallway quickly filled with neighbors who had come to watch.

They pointed, whispered, and speculated.

Then Candace made her grand entrance.

Pretending to be a devoted victim, she shouted toward my closed door.

"Ryan, I know you're inside!

"I don't blame you for attacking me yesterday. I was too emotional."

Her words immediately earned sympathy from several older women.

"What a forgiving woman."

"Exactly. That man has no idea how fortunate he is."

Candace grew even more smug when she heard them.

She raised her voice, speaking as if she were granting me mercy.

"Open the door right now and apologize to my mother to her face!

"Then come with me to Alder County Courthouse and marry me!

"If you do that, I'll generously forget everything that happened!

"You can still become a proper son-in-law in the Doyle family!"

The relatives outside immediately joined in.

"Open the door and apologize!"

"Don't reject our kindness!"

Their insults and pounding echoed across the entire floor.

Inside, I watched these ridiculous performers through the security monitor.

The world truly contained every possible variety of lunatic.

Did they think public pressure would force me to obey?

They could keep dreaming.

I didn't rush outside to trade insults with them.

Arguing with garbage only dirtied the mouth.

I calmly picked up my phone.

Then I activated the camera outside my door.

It recorded their intimidation, forced decorations, threats, and lies in high definition.

Every second was solid evidence.

Then I called the Ashford emergency dispatch line.

"Hello, is this emergency dispatch?

"I need police assistance.

"A group is harassing me outside my home and attempting to force entry."

Mr. Collins worked with frantic energy to protect his lucrative position. He assembled a moving crew and twelve building security officers to execute the existing possession order at Unit 702."Move quickly. Follow the inventory sheet and leave nothing undocumented."Mr. Collins shouted instructions, ignoring the sweat running into his eyes. The crew entered and began clearing the apartment with ruthless efficiency.Sour-smelling cookware was packed into oversized black bags.Yellowed clothing and worn bedding were hauled downstairs.Within an hour, Unit 702 stood completely empty.Even several discarded plastic bottles in the corner were added to the inventory.Mr. Collins directed the crew to place the household's property in the secured curbside collection area designated by the enforcement order.Several chipped ceramic bowls broke with sharp cracks. The worn belongings formed a mildew-smelling pile that immediately attracted flies.Candace's situation was worse. She f

Humiliation finally destroyed what remained of Candace's judgment. Her eyes reddened, and she surged from the floor like an enraged animal."You spoiled rich brat! You think money makes you untouchable?"I'll kill you today, even if it destroys both of us!"Her face twisted as she charged at me with both hands raised. She tried to seize my throat.I remained where I was without blinking. The officers had already anticipated violence and reacted immediately. One stepped forward and moved aside from Candace's charge. He caught her arm and forced it behind her in a controlled restraint. Her body struck the floor with a heavy thud.Candace was pinned against the cold tile. Her face hit first, and she screamed."Stop resisting!"The officer issued the command and secured her wrists in handcuffs.Even while restrained, Candace twisted, struggled, and shouted obscenities.I stopped looking at her and turned toward the trembling building manager.Mr. Collins shuddered when our

I removed a flash drive from my pocket."Officer, this contains the complete recording from the camera outside my door."It clearly shows them attaching decorations without permission, pounding on the door, and threatening me."It also records every false statement they made about me."Is that enough to open a formal investigation?"The officer accepted the drive and nodded seriously. Then I took a large document envelope from the cabinet inside my entryway. My private attorneys had spent the previous night investigating Candace.I removed the papers. Then I read them aloud before every neighbor in the hallway."Candace Doyle, age thirty-five, currently unemployed."You owe more than one hundred thousand dollars through high-interest online loans, and every major credit account in your name has been closed."You've been hiding from collection agencies."The neighbors erupted."What? She's buried in debt?""Mrs. Doyle tells everyone her daughter's a successful executive.

The hallway remained deathly quiet.Everyone was stunned by Mr. Collins's sudden bow.Candace held her cheap cigarette in a hand that shook uncontrollably. She stammered, and even her voice seemed unsteady."M-Mr. Collins, what kind of joke is this?"Did you drink too much last night and mistake him for someone else?"He's only a poor tenant who came here looking for work!"He doesn't even own decent designer clothing!"The words nearly frightened Mr. Collins out of his mind.He was terrified that Candace's stupidity would destroy his career too.Mr. Collins spun around. He raised one hand and slapped Candace across the face with all his strength. The crack echoed through the hallway. The blow was so hard that Candace turned halfway around. One side of her face swelled immediately, and blood appeared at the corner of her mouth."Are you blind?"Mr. Collins cursed at Candace as though she were already dead."Who are you to shout orders in this building?"Don't call me

A few minutes later, the elevator doors opened with a chime. Two Ashford police officers stepped out first.Mr. Collins, sweating and struggling for breath, hurried behind them.Several nervous security guards followed him.Candace froze for a moment when she saw the police. Then she noticed Mr. Collins behind them and immediately recovered her confidence. She rushed forward and pulled an expensive cigarette from her pocket for him.Pointing at my door, she launched into accusations before anyone could ask a question."Mr. Collins, officers, you arrived at the perfect time!"The man renting Unit 701 is insane!"He harasses my mother every day, and he sprayed poison into my eyes!"Look at the swelling. I nearly went blind!"Mrs. Doyle played her part immediately. She grabbed one officer's leg and began wailing."Officer, you've got to protect an old woman!"This man abuses the elderly and is trying to destroy our family!"The officer frowned and tried to help Mrs. Doyle

Police response still required time.Outside, Candace gradually lost patience when I continued refusing to appear. She assumed I was frightened and hiding like a coward. Her arrogance grew even worse."Fine! You refused the easy way, so you can have the hard way!"Candace kicked my door viciously."You think I can't do anything because you're hiding inside?"She pulled out her phone and dialed a number. Then she switched on the speaker and raised the volume so I could hear every word."Hey, Mr. Collins! It's Candace!"A slick-sounding man's voice came through the phone."Candace, what a pleasant surprise. What can I do for you?"Candace glanced proudly at my door and raised her voice."Mr. Collins, how are you managing this building?"The male tenant across from my mother has been abusing her, and now he's hiding inside!"Send someone to shut off the power and water to Unit 701!"Let's see how long he lasts in there!"Mr. Collins agreed immediately."Easy enough.
