Chapter 3

Penulis: Early Morning
The marks from his fingers stung across my cheek like they’d been seared by fire.

Looking at my raging father standing before me, and Delphine standing beside him gloating, I suddenly found the whole situation hilarious.

I nodded. “Fine. I won’t change it.

“And I’m leaving.”

I turned around and walked straight into the HR office.

When I pushed the door open, Sienna was sitting in her executive chair, filing her nails. Seeing me walk in, she didn’t even bother lifting her eyelids.

“What? Can’t handle working in the cleaning department?” Sienna pulled open a drawer, produced a long stack of corporate fine notices, and slapped them onto the desk. “Evangeline, your stress tolerance is pathetic. Looking for your employment exit clearance, are you? Pay off these fines first.”

I stepped forward and picked up the stack of penalty slips.

The items listed line after line were truly something to behold:

“Entered the office with the wrong foot three times last month, violating company policy. That’s a $200 fine.”

“Excessive breathing at your desk, consuming company resources and distracting your coworkers. That’s a $400 fine.”

“Charging a personal phone using company electricity, classified as unauthorized use of corporate property. That’s a $700 fine.”

“Keyboard wear-and-tear fees. Office chair depreciation fees. Compensation for workplace-related vision strain…”

Sienna tapped her fingernails against the desk.

“Adding it all up, you don’t get any base salary, and you owe the company $11,000. Pay up and leave. Otherwise, I’ll have legal sue you.”

I was so angry I laughed out loud.

“Sienna, do you honestly think your family wrote the labor laws?” I scoffed. “This garbage fine sheet wouldn’t even sell for a penny at a scrap yard.”

Right in front of her, I tore the entire stack of fine slips into tiny pieces.

Then I slammed the paper scraps straight into her face.

Shredded paper rained down all over her outfit.

“Evangeline! Have you lost your mind?!” Sienna screamed as she leaped out of her chair.

Just then, the office door was pushed open.

My mother, Valentina, rushed in and grabbed my arm in a vice grip.

“Evangeline! Are you sick? Do you need me to get your head checked?” she shrieked, her voice sharp and grating, dripping with control.

“Did you meet some rich guy out there? Are you trying to jump ship? Let me tell you right now—not a chance! If you want to leave, then leave your hands behind! This company trained those hands to write code! Without the Rhodes family, without us, you wouldn’t even be able to support yourself! You’re a useless nobody. Who would ever want you?!”

I yanked my arm out of her grip, looking at her face, twisted with frantic rage.

“Whether I’m a useless nobody or not, you’ll all find out very soon.”

I didn’t bother listening to any more of their screeching.

I turned around and strode out through the front doors of Rhodes Enterprises, leaving behind Leander’s enraged roars echoing in my wake.

“Get out! Get the hell out of this family! I’ll blackball you across the entire industry! Let’s see which company dares to hire an ungrateful backstabber who turned on her own blood! Sooner or later, you’ll be on your knees, begging me to take you back!”

After leaving Rhodes Enterprises, I made a quick trip back to the house.

Taking advantage of the fact that none of them had returned yet, I grabbed my ID documents and a few changes of clothes.

As for everything else, I left it all behind.

I rented a cheap basement apartment.

It was dark and damp, furnished with nothing more than a rickety single bed. Yet, I felt the air here was ten thousand times fresher than inside the Rhodes family mansion.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, I pulled out my backup phone and opened that text message from Nexora Technologies.

Nexora Technologies was the largest internet behemoth in the country.

Compared to it, Rhodes Enterprises was an insignificant speck of dust.

Taking a deep breath, I dialed the number listed in the text message.

The line was picked up almost instantly.

“Ms. Rhodes, you’ve finally made up your mind,” a calm voice answered.

It was the CEO of Nexora Technologies, Gideon Parker.

“Mr. Parker, I accept your offer,” I said softly.

A low chuckle came from the other end of the phone line.

“Ms. Rhodes, tomorrow morning at ten o’clock, in the top-floor executive conference room at Nexora Technologies. I look forward to your onboarding. An eight-million-dollar annual salary package—I stick to my word.”

The lobby was an absolute mess. The once-haughty employees of Rhodes Enterprises were packing up their personal belongings in low spirits.I walked over to the HR department area.Sienna was crouching on the floor, shoving several file folders into a beat-up cardboard box. The high-end tailored suit she had once been so proud of hadn’t been changed in days, exuding a stale, sour odor.Hearing footsteps, Sienna raised her head. When she saw me, a flash of humiliation crossed her eyes, but it was quickly replaced by a groveling, servile expression. She stood up, rubbing her hands together in total humility.“Ev—Ms. Rhodes …you’re here to inspect the grounds?”I looked at her, remaining silent.Right at that moment, Delphine charged in from outside. She was wearing a skimpy slip dress with heavy makeup. The moment she spotted Gideon Parker standing right behind me, her eyes lit up instantly. She shamelessly plastered herself against him, her voice sickeningly sweet and overly fl

The speed of Rhodes Enterprises’ bankruptcy liquidation was even faster than I had imagined. That $7 million patent infringement payout became the final straw that broke the camel’s back. Because they were utterly incapable of fixing the app, an influx of clients filed class-action lawsuits. Rhodes Enterprises’ cash flow completely ruptured. The day Leander received the court’s asset seizure notice, he passed out cold right in his office and had to be rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Word was that extreme rage and panic triggered a minor cerebral hemorrhage. But what did any of that have to do with me?As the middle child of the Rhodes family, I had been the forgotten, invisible entity from childhood to adulthood. Now, all I wanted was for them to forget me completely so I could live my life in peace.Unfortunately, peace proved hard to come by.On a Sunday evening, I was sipping red wine and reviewing tech industry reports inside my luxury high-rise apartment when the doo

The next afternoon, the four members of the Rhodes family showed up in the plaza in front of Nexora Technologies’ headquarters. They were still wearing yesterday’s high-end outfits, which they hadn’t even had time to change out of, leaving them looking rumpled and disheveled. In their hands, they held several crudely made cardboard signs with red spray paint reading: [Nexora Technologies CTO Evangeline Rhodes Is an Unfilial Monster Driving Her Own Father to Death!]“Evangeline, get out here! Give us back our hard-earned money!”Delphine had even set up a tripod and phone on the side, preparing to stream live to play the victim.“Guys, you won’t believe this…Evangeline Rhodes joined a big corporation, completely turned her back on us, and is trying to ruin our family business! Poor Dad is in his sixties, out here freezing in the wind…”Valentina sat on the pavement, slapping her thighs and wailing at the top of her lungs, attempting to use a public temper tantrum to guilt passersby

I moved the phone a few inches away from my ear to keep Sienna’s shrieks from bursting my eardrums.“Ms. Rhodes, aren’t you mistaken about something?”Leaning back into my ergonomic leather office chair, my tone remained completely unbothered.“I’ve already resigned. In fact, you were the ones who fired me. Don’t you have that genius tech guy, William Hayes? Didn’t you say you could just hire a few cheap freelancers to fix everything?”I made a point of reminding Sienna, my voice firm and resolute.Hearing this, Sienna blew her top on the other end of the line.“Evangeline, drop the passive-aggressive act!” she shrieked. “William told us everything! You maliciously deleted the database and left a back door before you walked out! That’s a federal cybercrime! Come back right now and fix these bugs, and I might consider not pressing criminal charges against you!”I couldn’t help but burst into laughter.“Sienna, has playing corporate bureaucrat withered your brain into nothing?” I

“Your CTO office has been fully prepared, and the eight-million-dollar salary contract has already been stamped by legal,” Gideon said smoothly. The moment the words left his mouth, a dead silence fell over the entire lobby. The four members of the Rhodes family stood frozen on the spot, unable to move a muscle.Leander’s hand, still hanging in midair, trembled slightly. His eyes were opened wide, and his mouth hung agape.“Mr. ...Mr. Parker…” Leander stammered out, his voice floating with disbelief. “Did ... did you mistake her for someone else? Her name is Evangeline! She’s my daughter—just a low-level worker who types basic code! How could she possibly be your Chief Technology Officer?”Delphine snapped back to her senses as well, screeching as she rushed forward.“Exactly, Mr. Parker! Don’t let her fool you! She hasn’t even finished college, and she sits around at home eating our food and waiting to die every day! She must have sold her body! How could a piece of trash like h

At nine-thirty the next morning, wearing a tailored black business suit, I stepped into the headquarters building of Nexora Technologies.I had barely entered the luxurious, expansive lobby when a sharp voice suddenly rang out from the side.“Well, well! Isn’t this our family’s ungrateful leech who got thrown out on her ear?”I stopped in my tracks and turned to look. There stood Leander, Valentina, Sienna, and Delphine, the picture-perfect family of four, dressed to impress in the lobby lounge. Leander was sharp in a tailored suit, while Valentina carried a limited-edition Hermès bag. Sienna and Delphine were dressed to the nines, looking every bit like socialites. They had come to Nexora Technologies today to secure the next round of funding for the photo-editing app.Delphine strutted over to me, looking my business suit up and down before letting out an exaggerated, hand-covered giggle.“Evangeline, dressed like that, you didn’t come to Nexora Technologies to apply for a jan
