Chapter 4

Author: Pineapple Lover
As I walked down the staircase with my arm linked through Julian’s, more than half the guests had already left the hall.

The remaining relatives immediately put on flattering smiles the moment they saw him.

But when their eyes landed on me, the contempt was still impossible to hide.

My mother sat at the center of the sofa, a glass of red wine in her hand.

Her gaze lingered on our intertwined hands for a second, her expression unreadable.

I couldn't tell what she was thinking. I only knew that when she spoke, every word was as sharp as ever.

“Since Mr. Cooper has taken a liking to her, this hopeless case is yours now.”

Her gaze shifted to me.

“Suzy Smith, don't go to the Cooper family and embarrass me by using my name.”

Her tone was vicious, filled with unmistakable satisfaction and revenge.

I forced down the waves of pain pulsing through my head.

Then I flashed a carefree grin.

“Don't worry, Ms. Sharp. I'll cling to the Cooper family with everything I've got. I definitely won't be borrowing your influence.

“After all, I'm off to live the life of a rich housewife now.”

My mother's hand trembled slightly around her wineglass.

She turned her face away and coldly spat out two words.

“Get out.”

The moment I turned around, the tumor in my brain seemed to crush every nerve in my body.

A burst of agony washed over me, and darkness nearly swallowed my vision.

The familiar metallic taste surged up my throat again, rushing toward my mouth.

I bit down hard on my back teeth and shifted all my weight onto Julian's arm.

In a trembling voice that only the two of us could hear, I pleaded, “Julian, get me out of here. Now.”

I couldn't collapse here.

I absolutely couldn't let my mother see me like this.

I had to play the role of a greedy, heartless opportunist to the very end and make her give up on me completely.

Julian immediately sensed something was wrong and tightened his grip around my hand.

Then he glanced over his shoulder and said, “We'll be leaving now.”

With one arm around my waist, half supporting and half carrying me, he quickly guided me toward the exit.

The night wind outside the estate was cold, carrying the biting chill of late autumn.

A black Maybach was parked at the bottom of the steps.

Just a few more steps away.

Once I got into the car, I could finally let myself pass out without having to keep pretending.

But at that moment, the sharp sound of hurried high heels came from behind.

At some point, my mother had followed us outside.

“Suzy Smith! You abandoned me for that gambling-addict father of yours, and now you've attached yourself to the Cooper family!

“A selfish, rotten person like you doesn't deserve anyone's sincere love!

“Once you walk out that gate, I won't spare you a second glance even if you die out there someday!”

I stopped in my tracks.

It felt as if a hand had closed around my heart, squeezing so tightly I could barely breathe.

I wanted to turn around and look at her one last time.

Just one last look at the mother I fought so desperately to protect.

But the moment I turned my head, the metallic sweetness rising in my throat could no longer be suppressed.

“Pfft!”

A mouthful of blood burst from my lips.

The overwhelming pain finally stole away my consciousness.

In the final second before my body gave out, the last thing I saw was my mother's face turning deathly pale, and her figure rushing toward me in complete panic.

There weren't many guests on either side of the aisle.Only our closest loved ones and the neighbors from the market came.My adopted little sister, dressed as a flower girl, scattered petals along the aisle ahead of us.Her smile was bright and innocent.I looked at Julian waiting in the distance. There was nothing in his eyes but me.The walk was only a few dozen feet, yet every step felt unbearably difficult. The pain in my head was so intense it felt as though it might tear me apart. But I clenched my teeth and kept the smile on my face.I didn't want my final day to leave them with a memory of pain.At last, my mother placed my hand into Julian's.His grip tightened around mine. His hand was slick with sweat.“Suzy, you're here.”“I’m here.”I looked at him.The officiant opened the Bible and began reciting the vows.“Julian Cooper, do you take Suzy Smith to be your lawful wife?“To love and cherish her, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?”“I do.”Julia

The doctors couldn't talk us out of it and eventually gave in.That afternoon, I returned to the hillside estate. Not long after I settled in, a maid came upstairs to inform us that a group of unexpected visitors had arrived.I forced myself to stay alert and let Julian wheel me downstairs. The neighbors from the seafood market were standing in the living room.Dressed in their best clothes, they looked awkwardly out of place in the luxurious surroundings.“Suzy, we heard you're getting married, so we came to see you.”The butcher held out a bag.“Everyone pitched in a little. It's just a small gift.”My eyes stung as I sat in my wheelchair.“Thank you, Sir.”“Thank you, Miss Cook.”My mother stepped forward and accepted the bag with both hands.“Thank you for looking after Suzy all these years. Please stay and join us for the wedding.”The neighbors looked startled by the invitation and waved their hands repeatedly.“No, no, that's alright.“Seeing that she's doing well is enough for

“No one can replace you. Don't think you can make someone else take your place.”I leaned against her shoulder and closed my eyes.“Mom, seeing you happy in this life... makes everything worth it.“Even if I had to go through hell to get here.”That night, my mother held me and cried for hours.Five years of distance, misunderstandings, and resentment vanished completely in that moment. When I woke up the next morning, she was sitting beside my bed arranging fruit on a platter. Her eyes were still a little swollen, but her expression had regained its calm.“You're awake? Have some fruit.”She picked up a slice of apple with a fork and held it out to me.I took a bite.It was sweet.Julian pushed open the door and walked in with several folders in hand.“The venue has been finalized. It'll be at the glass conservatory on the hillside estate.“You love flowers, and it's filled with your favorite red roses.“I've already arranged for the temperature to be regulated around the clock, so yo

My father's screams echoed through the hallway like a wounded animal. My mother's voice was cold as steel.“If you ever show your face in front of her again, I'll make sure you regret it. Now get out.”Silence soon returned to the corridor. My mother turned to look at me.The fury in her eyes hadn't completely faded. But the moment our gazes met, it softened into heartache.“Did he scare you?”She sat down beside the bed and asked softly.A wave of emotion washed over me.“Mom, have you always wanted to know why I chose him instead of you back then?”My mother's hand stiffened.“When you pushed me away and clung to him, I hated you for it.”She spoke quietly, her voice trembling.“I thought you looked down on me. I swore I'd never care about you again.”I looked at her exhausted face and slowly began to speak.“What if I told you I've lived two lives?”She froze but didn't interrupt me.“In my previous life, I chose you without hesitation. But the Sharp family never accepted me. To the

My mother looked at Julian, then at me.The determination in her eyes slowly crumbled, and her straight back seemed to sag under an invisible weight.“You two...”She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. In the end, she gave in.She knew I didn't have much time left.“Fine. You can get married.“But I'm coming with you.“From today on, wherever you go, I go.“You're not pushing me away again.”I saw the resolve in her eyes and didn't argue. The following afternoon, I sat on my hospital bed flipping through a bridal catalog Julian brought for me.The dull ache deep inside my head never stopped.I fought through the dizziness and forced myself to focus on the words printed on the pages.Suddenly, a commotion erupted outside the room.“Let me in! I'm her father! I have every right to see my own daughter!“Who the hell are you people to stop me?”I knew that voice well.It was my worthless father.Every time he showed up, he brought nothing but insults, demands, and greed.I closed the

During this time, I only ever addressed her as Ms. Sharp.“I’m so tired.”I leaned against the wall and spoke softly. My mother released my wrist, and her tears broke free once more. She stepped forward and pulled me tightly into her arms.Back in the hospital room, my mother sat on the sofa. After wiping away her tears with a tissue, she regained some of her usual composure, though her face remained pale.Julian stood by the window.I was the one who broke the silence.“Julian, didn't you want to know why I left back then?”He turned around, his gaze locking onto mine.“A few years ago, I stayed with my father.”My voice remained calm.“He was addicted to gambling and owed a massive amount of loan-shark debt.“He tried to force me to work in nightclubs to pay it off.”My mother's breathing grew uneven, and her hands twisted tightly together.“When I refused, he beat me. He whipped me with belts and threw chairs at me.“One night, he got drunk and smashed a bottle over my head.”I lift
