MasukKelly's POV
I looked up toward the entrance, and my stomach did a nervous flip. The line snaking down the sidewalk was filled with women in flawless designer gowns and men in tailored, custom-fit Italian suits. Hope spoke to me,"Look at the crowd tonight, Kel. This isn't some college dive bar where people are spilling cheap beer on your shoes. This is the official venture gala after-party." I stared as spotlights cut through the dark night sky, reflecting off the polished hoods of luxury sports cars idling by the valet station. Engines purred smoothly as wealthy patrons stepped out, handing their keys to attendants without a care in the world. This was a world of untouchable wealth, a world where people didn't have to worry about their water being cut off or dangerous men cornering them in a dark alleyway. "You belong in that room just as much as any of them," Hope whispered near my ear, her grip tightening supportively on my forearm as she began walking us toward the front of the line. "Remember the strategy. We are here to clear the fear out of your head, snap you out of that panic, and put you in a place where a real opportunity can happen. Keep your chin up, and walk like you own the block." I swallowed the massive lump of anxiety in my throat and forced my legs to move, my heels clicking sharply against the pavement. "Okay. Let's just get inside before I freeze to death." The VIP line moved quickly under the watchful eyes of three towering, broad-shouldered bouncers dressed in matching black suits. As we reached the front, Hope didn't miss a beat. She flashed her law firm ID card along with a pair of metallic VIP passes she had managed to secure through her office. The lead bouncer glanced at the passes, offered a polite nod, and immediately unhooked the velvet rope, waving us through the glass doors with a smooth gesture. The moment we stepped into the foyer, a wave of dry warmth, expensive cologne, and high-energy electronic music washed over us. The interior of Savágé was breathtaking, designed to make ordinary people feel entirely insignificant. Crystal chandeliers hung from high, exposed black ceilings, casting a smoky, golden glow over the massive multi-level lounge. A circular wrap-around bar made of polished black marble dominated the center of the main floor, surrounded by plush velvet booths where groups of executives were already laughing, shouting over the music, and clinking crystal glasses filled with champagne. "Follow me, I see an opening near the bar," Hope called out, using her shoulder to carve a path through the sea of silk and expensive wool suits. I kept close behind her, my eyes darting around the room as the heavy bass vibrated right through my chest. The sheer sensory overload was dizzying, but for the first time since the assault, the terrifying memory of the switchblade at my throat began to recede into the background, replaced by the sheer noise and energy of the club. "Brandy and a gin and tonic!" Hope shouted to the bartender the moment we reached the edge of the marble counter. The bartender nodded, sliding the drinks toward us a minute later. Hope grabbed the glasses, handed me the gin and tonic, and raised her own toward mine. "Drink up, Kel. It'll help soothe those frayed nerves and take the edge off." I took a long, desperate sip, the cold alcohol burning slightly as it went down, instantly helping to numb the cold knot of dread that had been sitting in my stomach all afternoon. I leaned back against the cool marble of the counter, letting the pulsing rhythm of the music steady my breathing. "I need to run to the restroom to check my makeup and fix a loose clip," Hope said, leaning close so I could hear her over the roaring volume of the crowd. "Don't move from this spot. If any of these corporate suits try to buy you a drink while I'm gone, let them. Start practicing your networking face." "Don't leave me here too long," I called out, watching her bright pink outfit disappear into the moving sea of well-dressed bodies near the VIP lounge stairs. Left entirely alone at the crowded bar, the protective wall I had built up over the last hour began to fracture. I took another deep sip of my drink, keeping my gaze fixed on the glowing liquor bottles behind the bar to avoid eye contact with anyone nearby. I felt like an imposter among these people, a ghost trying to pretend I still had a place in the business world. But suddenly I felt an intense pressure against the back of my neck, like an invisible hand drawing my attention away from the bar and upward toward the exclusive VIP balcony overlooking the main floor. I turned my head slowly, my eyes tracking past the glass railings of the second floor. He was sitting alone in a shadow-draped corner booth, entirely isolated from the laughing groups of executives and investors surrounding him. Even from a distance, his presence was suffocating, commanding the space without him saying a single word. He wore a dark, impeccably tailored suit that practically absorbed the dim club lighting, with his broad shoulders leaning back casually against the dark leather cushion. A crystal tumbler of amber liquid was held loosely in his fingers, resting against his knee. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and his jawline looked as though it had been carved from solid granite. But it was his eyes that made the breath leave my lungs. He stared down at me. His gaze was intense, dark, and piercing, stripping away the loud music, the crushing crowd, and the entire room until it felt like it was just the two of us existing in the space. There was no warmth in his expression, only a consuming curiosity that made my skin prickle with a completely different kind of heat than the terror I had felt earlier in the alley. My fingers tightened around the stem of my glass until my knuckles turned white. I knew I should look away. I knew I should hide from a man who looked that powerful, that untouchable, and inherently dangerous. But under his unyielding, heavy stare, my pride flared to life. For the first time all day, I refused to back down or run away. I held his gaze, lifting my chin slightly in open defiance as I took another slow sip of my drink, refusing to break eye contact.Kelly's POV The sound of loud banging on my apartment door dragged me violently out of a deep sleep. I bolted upright on the worn futon, my heart leaping into my throat as the door frame groaned under the force of another loud knock."Kelly Robert! Open this fucking door right now! I know you're in there!"Damnit! It was Mr. Miller, my landlord and I could hear his voice perfectly through the cheap walls. I scrambled quickly out of my blanket, my bare feet hitting the icy floor. Panic immediately flared in my chest as I tried to remember what day it was. My studio apartment wasn't much bigger than a college dorm room, but it contained important things I wasn't ready to lose."Just a second!" I called out, my voice sounding rough from both sleep and sheer anxiety.I rushed to the door, pulling it open just a crack, and anchoring my foot behind it just in case he tries to come in. Mr. Miller stood in the barely lit hallway, his face flushed red, holding a bright yellow piece of pape
Kelly's POV The afternoon air outside was biting and cold as I walked down the concrete steps of the apartment building and hit the sidewalk. I kept my head down trying to avoid my landlord, as I walked toward the small bodega at the corner of the block just to grab a sandwich and some coffee.I didn't even make it past the entrance of the alleyway.Suddenly, an iron grip clamped down on my upper arm, taking me off the sidewalk and dragging me backward into the shadows of the alley. I opened my mouth to scream, but a large, rough hand slapped firmly over my face, cutting off my air."Shut your mouth if you want to keep breathing," a low, gravelly voice hissed right against my ear.I was shoved hard against the brick wall, the rough stone scraping right through my jacket. Two large men in heavy dark coats stepped forward, blocking my view of the street. The one who had grabbed me had a jagged scar running down his jawline, and his eyes held a cruel, unblinking focus."You've bee
Kelly's POV By the time I finished telling her all that happened, Hope's face had gone from deep concern to absolute, blinding fury. "Those absolute monsters," she breathed, her voice shaking with rage. "To threaten you like that over a business loan? On the street in broad daylight?""They know where I live, Hope," I whispered, the cold reality settling deep into my bones. "They said they'd drag me out of here. I don't know what to do. I have no money, no job, and no time."Hope didn't let me spiral. Instead, she gripped my shoulders, forcing me to look her straight in the eyes. "Listen to me, Kelly. You are safe right now. They gave you two weeks, which means they aren't coming back tonight. We are going to handle this together, okay? You are not alone in this."She stood up firmly, wiping a rogue tear from her own eye, and walked over to the grocery bag. "First, you need to eat. You can't think straight when you're running on pure adrenaline."With quick, efficient movements, sh

Kelly's POV It had been a while since I last saw him up on that balcony, and the brief, electric connection we shared felt like it was slipping away into the smoky air of the lounge. Hope had come back to join me a few minutes ago, her bubbly personality a sharp contrast to the dark vibe of the club, but the uneasiness from the alleyway earlier that afternoon still hadn't fully faded from my system. My eyes kept scanning the moving crowd, hoping to catch the handsome face I’d only seen for a few fleeting seconds, but there was no success.“Still looking for Mr. Tall, dark, and intense?” Hope shouted beside me over the roaring thrum of the music, sipping her brandy and raising a perfectly shaped eyebrow.I tried to laugh it off, taking a small sip of my melting ice. “I wasn’t looking for anyone, Hope.”“Right, you were just scanning the room like you lost your child in a department store.” Hope snorted in laughter, leaning her elbow on the counter.I couldn't help but smile, the ten
