Kelly’s POV

By the time lunchtime arrived the next day, my concentration was already in tatters.

I had stared at the same section of my screen for so long that the numbers had begun to blur into shapes instead of meaning.

Every attempt I made to focus felt like trying to hold water in my hands, no matter how tightly I closed my fingers, it slipped through.

I told myself maybe it was because I was hungry and needed food, something light but filling, so I decided to go downstairs.

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    78. Blurring The Lines

Michael's POV I’d checked the time so many times that the numbers on the microwave started to blur. The apartment was quiet, and the only sound was the low hum of the city coming through the glass walls. Seattle glittered below me, but I didn't care about the view. Instead, I paced from the kitchen to the window and back. I had memorized every reflection on the marble floor. It's been three hours and the message I’d sent her sat open on my phone, there had been no reply.I told myself that it meant nothing. Kelly wasn’t impulsive, she weighed things, and she thought before she took any step. That was one of the things that had bothered me from the start, the way she paused before she made any important decisions, like she already knew the consequences. And I had just asked her to step into a decision that was surely going to have consequences.I ran a hand down my face and exhaled. This was a mistake, the rational part of my brain knew it, the part that remembered the promises I’d

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    77. Step Into The Unknown

Kelly’s POVThe elevator doors slid open and I stepped in with my coffee still too hot to drink. I held it by the lid and watched the floor numbers light up one after the other. The cabin filled with the quiet hum of people pretending they weren't bothered even if it was Monday morning at the office. A woman stood beside me, and I saw her typing an email on her phone with one thumb while balancing her briefcase under her left arm. And then there were the two men in suits arguing softly about a deadline like the day was already slipping away from them. It was early, but everyone already sounded tired. When I arrived at my floor, I followed the familiar path to my desk, fishing my badge out of my bag to place on my desk out of habit. My heels tapped against the tile in a rhythm I’d walked a hundred times before. Nothing looked out of place, or saw I thought. Because as I walked closer, I saw my computer screen, and it was on.My steps became slowed and for a second I honestly tho

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    76. Velvet Hour

Kelly's POV I went to Hope’s place because my apartment felt too loud. Inside my head, everything was turned up too high, every thought was scrambled, every memory replayed with a clarity I didn’t ask for.So I grabbed my jacket, texted her a quick are you home text, and left before I could change my mind. She opened the door barefoot, hair piled on top of her head like it had given up halfway through a bun. The smell of garlic and something sweet drifted out from her kitchen.“You look like you just escaped a crime scene,” she said in a way of greeting. “I escaped my couch,” I replied, stepping inside. “It was judging me.”“That couch has always been a snob,” she said. “Come in.”Her apartment was a familiar place that had settled into my bones. The same soft lamp in the corner, the same blanket thrown over the arm of the sofa that she pretended was decorative but used every night. I’d been here enough times that my body knew where to go without asking. I dropped onto the couch a

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    75. A Date With Family

Michael's POV The message from Owen stayed at the top of my notifications on my phone all morning, pinned there like a dare. I almost didn’t go. It said “Lunch. One o’clock. Don’t pretend you’re busy.”I read it a few times before locking the screen and dropping the phone face down on my desk. Outside my office, the floor moved in its usual rhythm, I could hear phones ringing, printers humming, the low murmur of deals being built and dismantled. Normal noise, work noise, the kind that usually steadied me, but today it was a bother. I suddenly remembered the last time I’d sat across from Owen, I’d torn into him in a conference room full of department heads. I could still see it as if it was yesterday, his report open on the screen, his voice steady as he presented it in that unserious carefree of his, and my temper snapping before he could finish. The silence that followed, and the way his jaw tightened as he tried to contain his anger. The memory pressed against my mind all mor

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    74. Brothers Are A Bother

Kelly's POV The knock came just as I was standing in front of the fridge pretending that staring at it long enough would magically produce dinner.I had already opened and closed it twice. The light hummed softly. Inside there was a half carton of eggs, a container of leftovers I no longer trusted, a bottle of water and a jar of something that might once have been sauce. My stomach growled in protest as I shut the door and leaned my forehead against the cool metal.Another knock, a bit louder this time. I frowned and checked the time on my phone. It's almost eight pm. No one visited me unannounced, and Hope would have texted first. My chest tightened for a stupid half-second before I shook the thought away and crossed the apartment. When I finally opened the door, Dylan stood there holding two grocery bags like a proud delivery driver. He grinned. “Tell me I caught you before you ate ramen again.”I stared at the bags. Then at him. “I don’t eat ramen that often.” was my response.

  • One Night And A Billionaire Obsession    73. A Lull In Motion

Kelly's POV The weekend felt a bit too long because by Sunday morning I had already cleaned my apartment twice. The countertop was wiped down, the laundry folded and the bed sheets changed. I stood in the middle of my living area staring at the space like it belonged to someone else, like I had stepped into a staged apartment and forgotten why I was there. I realized suddenly that there was nothing left to fix, and that was a problem.I told myself I deserved rest. I had been working nonstop for weeks, anyone would be tired. Anyone would feel strange once the noise stopped. That was the logical explanation, and I clung to it because the alternative was admitting I was restless for a reason I didn’t want to name.I checked my phone again, and there were no messages. But I hadn’t expected one. That was the truth. Michael had never texted me casually, never blurred the lines outside the office. But the silence still sat heavily in my chest. Ever since I agreed to the arrangement, ev
