MIRELLE

The noise from the grand party downstairs sounds like a distant wave crashing against a shore, muffled by thick walls and heavy carpets. I am standing right in front of the tall dressing table, wearing the simple navy blue dress Callan picked out for me. My hands are trembling as I try to fix my hair, my heart still racing from the way he looked at me downstairs, from the warmth of his fingers against my skin.

A sharp, sudden knock rattles the door.

I jump, my breath catching in my throat. Before I can even say a word, the door swings open wide.

It is my mother, Liora.

She walks into the room with that familiar, hurried grace, her expensive silk dress whispering against the floor. Her blonde hair is styled in a tight, perfect bun, and her diamond earrings catch the bright light of the vanity lamp. But her face looks tight, strained around the edges.

"Mirelle," my mother says, her voice sharp and brittle, cutting through the quiet air of the room. "Are you still not ready yet? Everyone is downstairs. Rhett is already greeting the business partners, and Callan is looking everywhere for you. You cannot keep people waiting like this."

I turn around slowly from the mirror, keeping my hands clasped tightly together in front of me to hide how badly they are shaking. "I am almost ready, Mom," I whisper, keeping my eyes fixed on the floorboards near her feet. "I was just... fixing my collar."

My mother stops walking just a few feet away from me. For a second, the room goes completely dead silent. I look up cautiously, and I see something in her hands that makes my breath freeze completely.

It is a small, neat velvet box, wrapped with a silver ribbon.

I stare at the box, blinking in utter confusion. My mother is holding it out toward me, but her hand is stiff, and her eyes refuse to meet mine directly.

"Here," she says, her voice dropping into a strange, forced softness that feels completely unnatural. "Take it."

I stay frozen in place, my feet glued to the floor. A cold chill runs down my spine. In all the years I have lived, through all my birthdays, school promotions, and small achievements, my mother has never once bought me a gift. Whenever I did well in school, she would just nod and tell me to study harder so I would not be a burden. When my father used to hurt us, she was too busy trying to survive to notice a present.

"Mom... what is this?" I ask, my voice trembling as I slowly reach out with one hesitant hand to touch the velvet surface. It feels soft, but inside, I feel like I am touching something dangerous.

"It is a gift," my mother replies, letting out a short, tight breath that sounds almost like a sigh of relief. "For your graduation. Open it."

My fingers shake as I untie the silver ribbon. The small lid pops open with a tiny click. Inside, resting on a bed of white silk, is a delicate silver bracelet with a tiny star charm. It is pretty.

"It is... beautiful," I murmur, swallowing hard past the heavy lump in my throat. I look up at her, my eyes wide and searching. "Thank you, Mom. But... why? You never give me gifts."

My mother looks away, her gaze drifting toward the window overlooking the dark, manicured gardens outside. Her jaw tightens, and the artificial softness on her face completely vanishes, replaced by that cold, practical expression I know all too well.

"Things are different now, Mirelle," she says, her voice turning sharp and business-like again. "You are twenty-two years old now. You just finished university. You have your degree."

"Yes," I whisper, my stomach twisting into a tight, painful knot. "I do."

"And because you are an adult now," my mother continues, turning her sharp eyes back onto me, "things need to change in this house."

I stare at her, not understanding, not wanting to understand the heavy weight settling into the room. "What do you mean, Mom?"

My mother takes a deep breath, crossing her arms over her chest as if she is bracing herself for a fight she knows she has already won. "I mean that you cannot live here anymore, Mirelle."

The words hit me like a physical blow. The room seems to spin around me, the bright lights blurring into bright streaks of gold and white. My ears start to ring.

"I... I cannot live here?" I repeat, my voice cracking horribly. I take a step backward, my legs bumping against the edge of the dressing table. "Where... where am I supposed to go? This is my home."

"This is not your home, Mirelle," my mother says harshly, her voice cutting through my panic with cruel clarity. "This is Rhett's estate. This is Callan's home. You are just... an addition from my past life that I brought along. And now that you have graduated, keeping you here under this roof is becoming a problem."

"A problem?" I whisper, hot tears finally spilling over my eyelashes and burning my cheeks. "What problem, Mom? I stay in my room. I do not bother anyone. I am quiet!"

"It is not about you being loud, Mirelle! Use your head for once!" My mother steps closer, her voice rising in sudden, frustrated anger. "People talk. Rhett's business associates talk. The servants whisper behind our backs. Having my grown daughter from my first, broken marriage living in the grand Mercer mansion... it raises questions. It invites gossip. It threatens the delicate position I have built here with Rhett and his family."

She reaches out and grabs my trembling shoulder, her fingers digging in tight. "Do you have any idea how hard I had to work to make Rhett marry me? Do you know what people say about women like me? I cannot let anything jeopardize my status in this family. Not even you."

The words tear straight through my chest, ripping away whatever tiny piece of hope I had left that my mother actually cared about me. I am not her daughter to protect. I am just a liability. A loose thread on her pretty new dress that she wants to cut off so nobody notices.

"So... the gift," I choke out, looking down at the velvet box in my hand, my voice shaking so badly I can barely speak. "The bracelet... it wasn't a graduation gift at all, was it?"

My mother lets go of my shoulder and takes a step back, smoothing down the front of her silk dress with a cold, detached expression. "It is a farewell gift, Mirelle. And a severance notice. I have already rented a small apartment on the other side of the city for you. The rent is paid for the next three months, and I deposited a small allowance into your bank account this morning."

"You... you already planned all of this?" I gasp, staring at her in sheer disbelief. "Without even asking me? Without even talking to me?"

"I am telling you now, and that is enough," my mother says coldly, turning toward the bedroom door. "I did what I had to do. You are an educated woman now. Go out into the world, get a job, and live your own life. Do not call me too often, and never come back here uninvited."

She reaches for the doorknob, pausing just for a second without looking back.

"Pack your bags tonight after the party ends," she adds quietly. "And leave before morning. It will be better for everyone."

With that, she opens the door and steps out into the hallway, pulling it shut behind her with a soft, final click.

I am left standing all alone in the silent room.

The tears fall down my face in a hot, steady stream. I sink slowly down to the floor, my knees pulling up to my chest, my hands clutching the silver bracelet until the edges of the box dig painfully into my palms.

She is kicking me out. She is throwing me away just like my father did, only this time, she is doing it with a smile and a checkbook.

And the worst part, the part that makes my chest heave with a deep, agonizing sob, is what this means for Callan.

If I leave this house tonight, if I pack my bags and disappear into that small, lonely apartment across the city, I will never see him again. I will be completely out of his life. The boy I love with every beat of my heart, the only person who ever protected me, the dazzling heir to the Mercer family—he will stay in this grand mansion, and I will be just a distant memory.

"Callan..." I whisper into the empty room, my voice breaking completely as I bury my face in my hands and weep into the dark.

  • One Night On My Stepbrother's Bed   He knows

MIRELLEThe room was completely black. I could not see anything, not even my own hands. My heart was beating so hard I thought it might break out of my chest. I stood by the bed wearing Anya’s black lace mask, my body shaking with fear and a wild, hungry need. Callan’s breathing was heavy and rough. He still thought I was her.“Anya…” he whispered into the dark. His voice was low and full of heat. “Is that really you? Come here. I need you so bad.”I did not speak. If I said one word he would know it was me. I just stepped closer until my knees touched the soft edge of the mattress. His hand reached out blindly and found my waist. His fingers gripped me tight, pulling me down onto the bed with him. The second my body pressed against his, a hot shiver ran all through me.“God, Anya, you feel so good,” he groaned. His hands moved up under my dress, sliding over my bare thighs. “I missed this. I missed your soft skin. Take this dress off. I want to feel all of you.”My fingers trembled a

MIRELLEThe salty taste of my tears is still fresh when a sharp knock sounds at my bedroom door. I scramble up from the floor like a frightened animal, wiping my face with the sleeves of my dress. I cannot let Callan see me crying."Mirelle?" Callan’s deep voice calls out from the hallway. "Are you decent? Everyone is asking for you downstairs."I take a shaky breath, steady my nerves, and turn the brass knob. The door swings open, and Callan stands there looking breathtaking in a sharp tuxedo with a black silk mask in his hand. But the moment his dark eyes land on my face, his expression shifts instantly from confidence to deep suspicion. His brows pull together, and his gaze zeroes in on my swollen, bloodshot eyes."Mirelle," Callan says, his voice dropping an octave. He steps right into the room. "Why are you crying? Did someone say something to you?""No, no, Callan, nothing like that," I lied quickly, forcing an unconvincing smile. "I just got some dust in my eye while packing a
