LOGINKnowing it had to be from Sara, Chloe Bishop turned down the volume, lowered her head, and held the phone close to her ear to listen discreetly.
“Mommy, we already ate lunch! Brother made it! He cooked grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup, mac and cheese with bacon bites, or scrambled eggs and buttered toast … burp~”
She let out an adorable little hiccup before continuing, “Mommy, what did you eat for lunch?”
Chloe obviously wasn't going to tell them she hadn't eaten yet, so she typed back: [The cafeteria here serves amazing food, and Mommy ate a ton! Don't worry about me.]
“You gotta work hard and keep going, Mommy! Brother, don't you want to cheer Mommy on?”
Adrian’s cold, aloof voice sounded from the other end. “No way.” So childish.
Chloe could practically picture the disdainful scowl on her son's face as he uttered that cold “No way.”
“Fine, then Sara will cheer Mommy up! Energy beam attack—pew, pew, pew! Did you get it, Mommy?”
Chloe’s heart melted into absolute mush. “Mm-hmm, Mommy received all of it!”
Swoosh!
The office door swung open out of nowhere.
Like a kid caught red-handed doing something bad, Chloe instantly snapped her spine straight and turned toward the door in total sheer horror.
Xavier Grayson’s imposing figure emerged from inside.
Though she had crossed paths with him several times today, this was the first time she was seeing him standing at full height.
He was tall and impeccably built, his long-limbed frame wrapped in an expensive, high-end tailored suit. With classic golden-ratio proportions, he had to be at least six-foot-one.
Standing up, he radiated an even more suffocating pressure, like an unshakable mountain peak. Simply by standing there, he seemed to look down upon the entire world.
The moment he stepped out, Xavier Grayson caught Chloe’s panicked little movements, though he didn't call her out on them.
"To the conference room," he instructed, his words as brief as ever.
Chloe scrambled to respond, "Yes, sir!"
Gathering her notes, she followed right behind Xavier Grayson into the elevator.
Even though the spacious elevator only held the two of them, Chloe felt completely suffocated. The aura radiating from this man was simply too overwhelming; being trapped in a tight enclosure with him felt like the air itself was saturated with his dominance, making her heart race involuntarily.
At five-foot-five, wearing two-inch heels put her on the taller side for a woman. Yet standing beside the six-foot-one Xavier Grayson, his towering, powerful frame made her look delightfully petite by comparison.
Chloe stole a quiet, subtle glance up at him.
From her angle, she could only see the sharp, sculpted lines of his profile—a face so drop-dead handsome that it lacked a single flaw.
To think that a man this handsome, tall, capable, and ridiculously wealthy—the ruler of a mega-conglomerate worth hundreds of billions, standing at the absolute top of the city's food chain—was actually...
Dysfunctional down there.
Chloe felt a pure, genuine pang of sympathy.
Ah... God really is fair after all. He never lets anyone have it all. He gave this man everything, only to take away his most essential capability as a male.
Tsk, tsk, tsk... How tragic.
The very next second, Chloe’s eyes collided directly with the man’s downward glance. A cool, pressing voice fell over her from above:
"What are you thinking about?"
Xavier Grayson was more than used to people staring at him, but the way Chloe had just looked at him was completely different.
In her eyes, he had actually caught a faint trace of... pity?
She was feeling sorry for him.
Chloe snapped out of her daze with a violent jolt and yanked her gaze away. She hadn't expected to get caught red-handed stealing a look at him! In an instant, every hair on her body stood on end from sheer anxiety.
If he found out what she was actually thinking, she might as well pry open the elevator doors and jump straight down to save him the trouble of firing her!
"I..." Chloe’s mind raced at breakneck speed, desperately cobbling together a cover story.
"I was just thinking... how can a man as perfect as you exist in this world, President Grayson?! You've managed every single good thing in life purely with your face! Anyone who says the stars are pretty clearly hasn't looked into your eyes! Getting to live a single day with a face like yours would mean dying with zero regrets!"
Xavier Grayson, suddenly hit with a wall of shameless flattery: "..."
Noticing the man's skeptical look, Chloe suddenly recalled what Samuel Grayson had said earlier—that every single former secretary had been fired for harboring inappropriate feelings for the boss.
He wouldn't think I'm hitting on him, would he?!
Driven by an absolute, desperate urge to survive, she hurriedly added, "Please rest assured, President Grayson! I have zero romantic interest in you whatsoever! I am already a mother of two children! If I ever harbor even a single drop of inappropriate intent toward you, you can fire me on the spot!"
Honestly, she had zero interest in men these days—she was only interested in making money!
She was going to cling to that sixty-thousand-Dollar paycheck for these two weeks with a vice-like grip!
Xavier Grayson paused for a second.
This woman... looked so youthful and pure that he constantly kept forgetting she was already the mother of two children.
What unnerved him, however, was the fact that this was the very first time in his entire life a woman had explicitly told him she didn't have a single drop of interest in him—and he could actually feel that she meant every word.
She wasn't playing hard to get; she was being entirely serious.
This was supposed to be something that pleased him—he had finally found a secretary who would focus purely on her work.
And yet, for some strange reason, a tiny, unexplainable flicker of displeasure stirred deep within his chest.
"Bro, you are seriously lacking loyalty here. How could you keep such a sweet girl a secret from me?!"Samuel Grayson pushed on relentlessly, refusing to drop the subject. At the head of the dining table, Xavier Grayson sat like a stone statue, ignoring their chaotic gossip entirely as he ate his dinner in silence.Feeling a bit foolish, Samuel sighed. "Fine, don't tell me then. See if I care."Muttering under his breath, he casually cut himself a slice of the cake and took a bite. The texture was entirely average, and the flavor paled in comparison to the high-end pastries he usually bought."Honestly, the taste is pretty mediocre—"Xavier Grayson’s expression darkened instantly, like the quiet terrifying calm before a violent storm."Did I give you permission to eat it?"Samuel looked up abruptly. Meeting his brother's sinister, shadowy gaze, he couldn't help but shudder. Did he really have to flip out that fast?!The cake tasted completely average—was he not even allowed to state f
A subtle, enigmatic smile tugged at the corner of Xavier Grayson’s lips.As he looked deep into her eyes—clear and bright as an autumn lake—a quiet ripple stirred within his chest."Thank you."He had never felt that birthdays held any real meaning. Year after year, the date slipped by, buried under endless mountains of work. Yet tonight, with her standing by his side, a birthday suddenly felt like something capable of bringing genuine joy.Hearing his thanks, Chloe lifted her eyes, only to collide directly with his gaze.Looking up, she found herself caught in eyes as deep and hypnotic as a starry midnight sky—a dark vortex capable of drawing anyone in, trapping them in its spell. The smile froze on her lips as her heart launched into a chaotic, traitorous pounding."Y-You're welcome, Mr. Grayson! Enjoy your lunch. I'll take my leave now!"Desperate to escape the intense pull of his gaze, Chloe spun around and fled the office. She darted out so fast that Xavier Grayson didn't even ha
The next day.Outside the CEO's private office.A large, elegant cake box sat on her desk, and Chloe couldn't stop fretting over it. Even if she had made it out of pure gratitude, an undeniable social chasm separated them. How did a lowly secretary find the nerve to shower the big boss with personal favors? If she made even a small attempt to curry favor, people would inevitably accuse her of cozying up to him with ulterior motives.Countless socialites and ambitious women in Vegas were practically clawing over each other just to get close to Xavier Grayson. She had barely been working by his side for any time at all, yet here she was, baking him a custom cake. Even the most naive person would jump to the wrong conclusion!Sitting at her desk, Chloe clutched her head and ran her fingers through her hair in frustration. How on earth am I supposed to hand this over to him?Remembering how she had previously gone out of her way to remind Mr. Grayson that she was a mother of two, turning
Inside the DIY dessert shop.Chloe Bishop leaned over the stainless-steel counter, meticulously spreading a layer of rich, glossy chocolate ganache over the freshly baked cake base.If this were for her own kids, she would have churned out a sweet, pink strawberry cake in a heartbeat. But knowing Xavier Grayson's frosty, no-nonsense personality, he certainly wouldn't care for anything overly flashy. A classic, refined chocolate cake was the safest bet.Once the rich coating was perfectly smooth, she arranged fresh, vibrant strawberries around the edges, carefully piping the words Happy Birthday across the top.Done!Admiring her handiwork, she gingerly lifted the cake into a sleek, transparent display box. With the box cradled in her arms, she hopped onto a crowded city bus and headed home.At the entrance of the residential compound, Ruby was leading Adrian by one hand and Sara by the other, fresh off their return from the clinic. They bumped right into Chloe at the gate. The second
Grayson Corporation, CEO's Office."Knock, knock."Chloe walked in, carrying a package and a small bag."Come in."Xavier Grayson was seated at his desk, deep in work as usual. With his head bowed over a stack of documents, his striking, flawless bone structure, a nose as straight as a Greek sculpture, and sharp, sculpted lips pressed into a faint line, his cold, aristocratic features were enough to make anyone's heart skip a beat.Just thinking that this very same, ice-cold man had spent his night sitting in a hospital waiting room with her made it all feel like a surreal dream. She set the bag containing his suit onto the corner of his desk. "Mr. Grayson, I've had your suit dry-cleaned and neatly pressed. Thank you so much for everything last night—I honestly don't even know how to begin to express my gratitude. But I won't forget what you did for us."Gratitude? That's not the kind of repayment I want from you.Or perhaps... she could offer herself instead?A thoughtful gleam flick
3:00 AM.Under the cloak of night, the residential compound was pitch-black and dead silent. Not a soul stirred in the chilly air.The silver Rolls-Royce pulled up to the building entrance. Chloe stepped out with the child, still wrapped in Xavier Grayson's jacket." Mr. Grayson, Xavier, thank you so much for today. As for your jacket..."She started to slide the suit off her shoulders to return it, but Xavier Grayson didn't make a move to take it."Keep it. I'm heading back.""Alright. Drive safely, Mr. Grayson."Chloe watched his car pull away and vanish into the night before finally heading upstairs with a sense of relief. She felt terrible for dragging him into an emergency room visit in the middle of the night and keeping him there until the very end. It was all a bit overwhelming.Little Adrian hadn't slept a wink. He had stayed up in the living room, waiting for them to return. Hearing the door click open, the little boy rushed over to welcome them."Mommy, how is Sister?" Adri
