Chapter Five: Owen

last update Last Updated: 2025-09-30 19:09:06

The scent of thousands of freshly cut roses clashed with the cool night air on the rooftop.

I adjusted the oval-cut diamond in its velvet box, feeling the weight of this lie.

If we were going to be a believable couple, we had to play the part well. And as the initiator, I

had to give it my best so she could follow through accordingly.

When Tessa called me earlier that day and asked for a wedding ceremony. I quickly thought that

the next best thing was to plan a proposal.

Something cliché and romantic that would sell it to the public eye that I was a man in love. An intentional man as they would like to speculate.

My personal assistant had done well. An exclusive rooftop to overlook the busy city, a massive diamond ring, and a colossal lit-up sign screaming ' Will you marry me?'

But to be fair, none of this would have been possible on such short notice if I couldn’t afford it.

The doors to the terrace opened and my eyes fell on Tessa.

She was perfect. Almost as if she knew this was happening.

She was dressed to the nines- a vision in a dark red sleeveless silk dress. It clung to her curves, and a dangerous thought flashed through my mind.

I could rip that fabric off her body with ease. I had prepared a back-up outfit just in case, but she was more than ready.

Owen, focus. I told myself.

This night had to be perfect.

“Mr Carter,” she said, cutting through my thoughts. Her voice had a rhythmic melody. She seemed excited and flustered at the same time.

I let my mouth lift up in a soft grin.

“Ms Hayes. You clean up nice.”

“You do too.”

Our eyes met for a brief second and I felt what resembled a spark of electricity. I knew she felt it

too.

But we weren’t here to dwell on butterflies and idiocies. There was a performance to be staged.

I took her hand in mine. The softness of her palm against my seemingly rough ones was a

beautiful contrast.

Standing in front of the sign, cameras in place, I did not have any words rehearsed, so I went straight to the point as I went down on one knee and took out my ring box.

Once again she gasped at the sight of the glimmering diamond.

“Ms Hayes, will you marry me?"

I watched her swallow. I saw the hesitation in her eyes as she quickly turned to look at the cameras.

It almost seemed like she was rethinking everything at that moment.

“Yes,” she finally said to my utmost relief. I’ll marry you, Owen Carter.”

I grinned slightly, slipping the ring on to her slender finger. It was a perfect fit.

I rose to my feet. The camera flashes were momentarily blinding.

“Do we have to kiss now?” She asked softly.

“We should. It’ll make it more believable."

Gently, I pulled her closer, leaned in and pressed my lips against her soft ones. It was a slight kiss but deeply satisfying nonetheless. Enough for the media to feast on.

~

We settled down for dinner after the picture buzz died down. The photos would be edited and released by the next day.

I noticed Tessa had grown quiet.

"Are you alright?" I asked.

“It just dawned on me that we’re really doing this.”

I smirked. “Yes we are. Having cold feet?”

“Not yet."

“Hmm,” I took a sip of my drink. “It’s just one year. I’ll stay out of your way I promise.”

I handed over an envelope. “That’s a copy of your contract. Go through it and sign. Then give it to me the next time we meet up.”

She took the envelope and opened it. “It’s not as bulky as I anticipated.”

“I like to go straight to the point in my dealings.”

“Nice.” She looked impressed.

“You have something…” I didn’t finish the statement before I used the pad of my thumb to wipe off the food particle by the side of her mouth.

Our eyes met again. That simple intimacy was going to be the undoing of my self control.

That was when I resolved that for the next one year I’d have to keep my distance from her as much as possible.

~

“What is this?” My brother, Aiden, stormed into my office that morning, wielding his tablet like a weapon as he slid it across my table.

I looked down despite knowing what he was fussing about. It was the headline announcing my engagement to Tessa.

“You can’t read?”

He fumed. It was moments like these that I saw the spitting resemblance we stared. The only difference was our eye colour.

Despite being a few years younger, Aiden liked to act like he was the older one sometimes.

“I had no idea you were dating anyone.”

“Well I am. And now we’re engaged.” I said, casually leaning back in my chair.

Aiden took a long look at me, and his eyes sparked in realization.

“You’ve lost your mind.” He stated flatly.

I glared at him. “I know what I’m doing.”

“I don’t think you do. If anyone else catches on to this, we’ll all go down for it.”

“That’s why you should keep your mouth shut and be a nice brother-in-law.”

“You didn’t even tell mom about this.”

“It’s a surprise.” I shrugged.

“Just so you know, you’re in trouble.”

“She’ll get with the program sooner or later.”

I pulled stunts like these all the time. She would surely understand.

Or maybe not.

I sat across from Owen in his private jet, trying to focus on my magazine, but my eyes kept drifting back to him. Our honeymoon at the Hamptons was gone in what seemed like a snap of my finger. The silence between us was heavy, charged with unspoken words. We hadn't walked much after the morning we had sex and what followed after. I had made sure to keep my distance. On the bright side, it gave me some girl bonding time with the housemaids. But even after all the time to myself, I couldn't shake off the memory of his face that morning – the raw passion, followed by the cold mask he put back on. "Are you going to stare at me, or eat your lunch, Tessa?" Owen asked, his eyes still on his laptop screen. I hadn't realized I had been looking at him. Sitting up and clearing my throat, I tried to regain my composure. "I'm thinking," I replied, putting the magazine down sharply. "About what?" he asked, finally looking up. "About you," I said honestly. "About how you can be so

Owen finally stirred, kissing my temple before getting out of bed. He retrieved his discarded towel and wrapped it around himself. I could feel his gaze on me for a moment, and combined with the heavy air around us, it made the hairs on my neck stand. "Breakfast will be brought up," he said, walking to the table to retrieve his phone. His shift of his mask back to the CEO was brutal. "Owen," I said, sitting up, pulling the duvet over my bare breasts. "Wait." He paused, still looking at his screen. "Yes?" "What...what was that?" "What?" he asked, finally raising his head from his phone screen. "Well...we had sex Owen. If you need me to spell it out for you." "We're married Tessa, that was bound to happen." he said, reverting his gaze to his phone and then to the wardrobe to pick out some clothes. I could see his shoulders become slightly tense and that pushed me to ask more. "So you're saying our sex was...a necessity?" I asked, feeling hurt by my own choice of wo

The sun was streaming through the floor-to-ceiling glass, but I didn't open my eyes right away. My body felt heavy and slow, weighed down by the tense night I had with Owen. I positioned myself far from my husband and tried to see if I could sleep off again, to where I had a little peace. I couldn't. I opened my eyes. The space next to me was empty. Of course he would have gone back to business reports instead of actually spending his honeymoon with his wife. Then I heard water running. The sound was coming from the massive, open-concept bathroom area. I sat up, pulling the thick duvet around me. The events of last night replayed in my head, making my chest tighten. I breathed out air from my lungs to prepare myself for a day of unhappy tension. The bathroom door slipped open. Owen stepped out. He was wearing only a towel wrapped around his waist. Water drops glistened on his hair and slowly dropped on the sculpted muscles of his chest and shoulders. The sexiness hi

The room was too big and too quiet. The master suite was all grey, white and dark wood. With the bed, low and in the centre. I slipped off the bed very quietly. My heart was pounding so loud, I was sure Owen could hear it, even with his back turned. But he was silent, an unmoving shape at the far end of the mattress. He's asleep, or is pretending to be. Either way, I was safe for now. The relief that washed over me made my knees weak. I pulled the soft silk robe tighter around me. Walking slowly, I made my way to the huge glass windows. They made up the whole outside wall of the room. I could see the dark ocean and the pale moon outside. It was a perfect view. The glass was so thick it shut out the whole world. And I could view it from the other side of the glass. I sat down on the low, hard window ledge, and hugged my knees to my chest. I thought about Owen. He was the real problem. Not the contract, not the media, him. During the ceremony, he looked at me wi

The car was too quiet. It was the expensive, thick kind of silence my driver always kept. But tonight, it felt like noise. Loud with all the thoughts I didn't want to have. Tessa sat far away from me, pressed against the car door. We had stopped by the penthouse to pick up a few things before heading to our honeymoon destination. The wedding had tired her out. I knew the silence was making her more nervous. I looked at her, she looked scared. Not just because of the wedding, she was scared of me. I gripped the leather seat. The whole wedding was a show she had requested when she agreed to my contract, but it also meant we had to be a real couple. Society expected it. My mother expected it. I hated that I cared what she thought. I hated that I kept seeing the fear and uneasiness in her eyes. I shut my eyes remembering the guilt that made me build this wall around myself years ago. Walls to stop me from feeling anything I might lose. Love is weakness. But Tessa made m

Taking a deep breath, I nodded. Slowly, I walked into the room filled with faces I had never seen before. All people of high status. I walked with my head high, focusing on the beautiful arrangements of the white orchids until I reached the altar where the priest and Owen stood. I could feel all eyes on me. Some stared with curiosity, others with distant repulsion. It was the fault of the media, the fault of the contract, and entirely the fault of the man I was about to marry. The man I was about to marry. The room went quiet as my eyes finally found him on the same altar I stood on. He looked utterly breathtaking in a bespoke black suit. Hazel eyes looking deep into me, making feel naked under his gaze. His raven black hair was combed back, little strands decorated his forehead and neckline. The scent of ceder filled my nostrils as he took my hand in his. The touch, usually so cool, was filled with so much warmth as it was firm. "Good day brothers and siste
