You said no?!" Sana yelled, practically shaking me out of my chair that evening.

We had met up at a downtown bar and I had just finished recounting the morning's events to her.

I frowned, swirling the ice in my glass.

"I don't want to be married. Was that not obvious?" I insisted. What we had that night was never supposed to escalate to a marriage contract.

Before Owen left my apartment, he laid out the deal. He needed a temporary wife for business reasons.

A year long façade to secure a massive deal and satisfy a demanding family.

"Why don't you just pick one of your wealthy friends? Won't I look like a gold digger?" I asked him.

"Ms. Hayes, the media can easily be manipulated. Everyone loves a good story." He stated coolly.

"You will be duly compensated after one year when we get a divorce. And during that time period, I'll ensure you're properly taken care of."

His terms were simple at least. But I didn't think about it for more than a few seconds.

"I can't do it."

He'd risen to his feet, handing me his business card, the same one he left at the hotel.

"Don't be in a hurry, think about it first. Call me when you've really given it a thought."

Sana grabbed my shoulders, pulling me from my memory.

"Tessa, listen to me! It's just one year! Think of the benefits. You're married to one of the most eligible bachelors in America! You can help your company secure the gig, get a huge promotion and by the time both of you divorce, you'll have enough money to fund any lifestyle you want."

"You don't even know how much he plans to give me." I pointed out defensively.

"It's more than your annual salary, that's for sure." She insisted.

"Girl, I'm being for real! I can already picture your wedding." She was grinning, caught up in a ridiculous fantasy.

"Technically, we're already married." I reminded her shrugging.

"Even better, but there has to be..." She trailed off, her eyes suddenly wide as saucers as she stared over my shoulder.

"Oh. My. Goodness."

"What is it? I tried to turn, but she held me in place.

"Don't look. Austin and Clarissa just walked in. "

"What the actual F**k?" I cussed, heart plummeting. I had been doing great without seeing them, and now they had to be here.

"Olay it cool. Clarissa is approaching." Sana warned, glaring at the couple.

Clarissa's sickeningly sweet perfume reached my nostrils before she stood over us, radiating saccharine joy.

"Hello Tessa." She chirped.

I looked at the woman who had been my best friend for a decade. I had the meanest words ready, but all I could feel was the razor-sharp sting of betrayal.

"Ten years." I said, my voice low.

"Ten whole years of being best friends, and you chose to do this to me?"

She shrugged, a flash of something like guilt gone instantly.

"It Just happened. "

"There are thousands of men in this city, and the one you decided was best for you was my boyfriend?"

Austin sidled up next to her, looking cocky, not the guilty mess I'd kicked out.

"Babe, I just got us a table."

I couldn't help a sarcastic chuckle.

"So you're capable of planning dates now?"

His eyes narrowed.

"I found a woman who actually deserved it."

Clarissa, eager to change the subject, squealed.

"Oh well. We actually came here to celebrate some good news."

"Austin finally got a job?" Sana said sarcastically, and I fought back a snort.

Clarissa ignored her, flashing a beautiful golden ring in our faces.

"We're getting married!"

A blind wave of rage and pain crashed over me.

For three years, he wouldn't commit to me, and wouldn't plan a decent evening for us. Yet he was doing all of it for her in a matter of months. He had wasted my time, knowing all along I wasn't the girl he wanted.

With a forced smile, I looked at them.

"Congratulations to you both. It's wedding season after all."

Sana and I exchanged knowing glances and shared a wide smile.

"It certainly is." Sana agreed.

Clarissa frowned. "What's all that smiling about?"

I looked straight at Austin, whose proud smile had insanely evaporated.

"Oh, I'm getting married too."

Clarissa scoffed, rolling her eyes hard.

"Right. Like you could find a man so soon."

I felt the last doubt I had concerning Owen's deal dissolve, replaced by a need to prove them wrong.

"Oh. You'll see." I said, grinning wider.

They definitely would.

I sat across from Owen in his private jet, trying to focus on my magazine, but my eyes kept drifting back to him. Our honeymoon at the Hamptons was gone in what seemed like a snap of my finger. The silence between us was heavy, charged with unspoken words. We hadn't walked much after the morning we had sex and what followed after. I had made sure to keep my distance. On the bright side, it gave me some girl bonding time with the housemaids. But even after all the time to myself, I couldn't shake off the memory of his face that morning – the raw passion, followed by the cold mask he put back on. "Are you going to stare at me, or eat your lunch, Tessa?" Owen asked, his eyes still on his laptop screen. I hadn't realized I had been looking at him. Sitting up and clearing my throat, I tried to regain my composure. "I'm thinking," I replied, putting the magazine down sharply. "About what?" he asked, finally looking up. "About you," I said honestly. "About how you can be so

Owen finally stirred, kissing my temple before getting out of bed. He retrieved his discarded towel and wrapped it around himself. I could feel his gaze on me for a moment, and combined with the heavy air around us, it made the hairs on my neck stand. "Breakfast will be brought up," he said, walking to the table to retrieve his phone. His shift of his mask back to the CEO was brutal. "Owen," I said, sitting up, pulling the duvet over my bare breasts. "Wait." He paused, still looking at his screen. "Yes?" "What...what was that?" "What?" he asked, finally raising his head from his phone screen. "Well...we had sex Owen. If you need me to spell it out for you." "We're married Tessa, that was bound to happen." he said, reverting his gaze to his phone and then to the wardrobe to pick out some clothes. I could see his shoulders become slightly tense and that pushed me to ask more. "So you're saying our sex was...a necessity?" I asked, feeling hurt by my own choice of wo

The sun was streaming through the floor-to-ceiling glass, but I didn't open my eyes right away. My body felt heavy and slow, weighed down by the tense night I had with Owen. I positioned myself far from my husband and tried to see if I could sleep off again, to where I had a little peace. I couldn't. I opened my eyes. The space next to me was empty. Of course he would have gone back to business reports instead of actually spending his honeymoon with his wife. Then I heard water running. The sound was coming from the massive, open-concept bathroom area. I sat up, pulling the thick duvet around me. The events of last night replayed in my head, making my chest tighten. I breathed out air from my lungs to prepare myself for a day of unhappy tension. The bathroom door slipped open. Owen stepped out. He was wearing only a towel wrapped around his waist. Water drops glistened on his hair and slowly dropped on the sculpted muscles of his chest and shoulders. The sexiness hi

The room was too big and too quiet. The master suite was all grey, white and dark wood. With the bed, low and in the centre. I slipped off the bed very quietly. My heart was pounding so loud, I was sure Owen could hear it, even with his back turned. But he was silent, an unmoving shape at the far end of the mattress. He's asleep, or is pretending to be. Either way, I was safe for now. The relief that washed over me made my knees weak. I pulled the soft silk robe tighter around me. Walking slowly, I made my way to the huge glass windows. They made up the whole outside wall of the room. I could see the dark ocean and the pale moon outside. It was a perfect view. The glass was so thick it shut out the whole world. And I could view it from the other side of the glass. I sat down on the low, hard window ledge, and hugged my knees to my chest. I thought about Owen. He was the real problem. Not the contract, not the media, him. During the ceremony, he looked at me wi

The car was too quiet. It was the expensive, thick kind of silence my driver always kept. But tonight, it felt like noise. Loud with all the thoughts I didn't want to have. Tessa sat far away from me, pressed against the car door. We had stopped by the penthouse to pick up a few things before heading to our honeymoon destination. The wedding had tired her out. I knew the silence was making her more nervous. I looked at her, she looked scared. Not just because of the wedding, she was scared of me. I gripped the leather seat. The whole wedding was a show she had requested when she agreed to my contract, but it also meant we had to be a real couple. Society expected it. My mother expected it. I hated that I cared what she thought. I hated that I kept seeing the fear and uneasiness in her eyes. I shut my eyes remembering the guilt that made me build this wall around myself years ago. Walls to stop me from feeling anything I might lose. Love is weakness. But Tessa made m

Taking a deep breath, I nodded. Slowly, I walked into the room filled with faces I had never seen before. All people of high status. I walked with my head high, focusing on the beautiful arrangements of the white orchids until I reached the altar where the priest and Owen stood. I could feel all eyes on me. Some stared with curiosity, others with distant repulsion. It was the fault of the media, the fault of the contract, and entirely the fault of the man I was about to marry. The man I was about to marry. The room went quiet as my eyes finally found him on the same altar I stood on. He looked utterly breathtaking in a bespoke black suit. Hazel eyes looking deep into me, making feel naked under his gaze. His raven black hair was combed back, little strands decorated his forehead and neckline. The scent of ceder filled my nostrils as he took my hand in his. The touch, usually so cool, was filled with so much warmth as it was firm. "Good day brothers and siste
