Chapter 3

Autor: candy
Four days left until I leave.

Silver Bay Healing Center granted me an online interview.

It wasn't for the original research position, but rather a three-month clinical fellowship. If I passed the evaluation, I could apply for a permanent role.

I spent two days reviewing my material, flattening out the creased evaluation certificate and placing it next to my webcam.

The interviewer asked how I would handle panic responses in pups during their first shift.

By the time I reached the third case study, the nerves finally vanished.

I knew how to distinguish a damaged wolf spirit from pure emotional distress, and I knew exactly when forced training needed to stop.

When the interview ended, the interviewer smiled. "Irene, report for duty next Monday."

I confirmed a short-term apartment near the healing center, paid the deposit, and slid my license into my carry-on bag.

In the afternoon, I went to see a healer alone to have my wolf checked.

Nora stepped out from the depths of my consciousness. Her silver-gray fur was a bit duller than before, but she was still willing to respond to my call.

The healer advised me to avoid shifting for a short period after the bond dissolution and prescribed pain relievers. As long as my condition remained stable on the day, I would be cleared to fly as planned.

When I got home, two dinners were set on the dining table.

Leon hadn't gone to the office.

He stood in the kitchen with his sleeves rolled up, sauce staining the edge of the skillet. Seeing me walk in, he forced a stiff smile. "It's the mushroom risotto you used to love. I asked the chef at the restaurant for the recipe."

After a pause, he asked, "Could you sit with me for a minute?"

I sat down.

He pushed a new staffing schedule toward me.

Someone was assigned to accompany Martha to physical therapy, an extra supervisor was added to the pup clinic, and my Luna administrative duties were redistributed.

I had brought up this exact plan to him at least five times before.

"I'll make adjustments," he said. "If you want to work, you can pick anywhere in town. I know all the directors at the research center."

Then, he added, "Troy died saving my life. Every time Livie says she's scared, I'm reminded of that day. Irene, you know what I owe her."

"You can cover her medical bills and arrange reliable help for her." I looked at him. "But why did you hide my acceptance letter?"

He didn't answer.

So, I asked again, "When she was trying on clothes that day, did it really have to be you by her side?"

"When I'm with her, I don't have to walk through the door and immediately deal with shift schedules, complaints, and endless decisions," he replied.

I gripped my water glass, my palms slowly growing cold. "And who left all those things for me to deal with?"

Leon raised his head. His mouth opened slightly, but no words came out.

Right then, Noah forwarded the final schedule for the foundation's launch, asking me to confirm the medical introduction section.

I tapped on the attachment.

On the first page, right beneath Livie's photo, was a single line of text—"Founder of the Pup Trauma Recovery Initiative."

I scrolled down.

The tiered assessments, family interventions, wolf tracking, and even the moon cards I had designed to help the pups recognize their progress were printed in full right there in the brochure.

My name was nowhere in the entire document.

I handed the phone to Leon. "Do you know who created this program?"

He glanced at the screen, and his expression shifted. "I can explain."

I didn't pull the phone back. "Have you seen this version before?"

He stayed silent.

The last page bore his approval stamp, and it was dated yesterday.

When my three-month fellowship came to an end, I passed the retention evaluation. The night before the results were announced, I was too nervous to sleep and kept flipping through the materials I had prepared.Nora lay by my pillow, her tail brushing against my hand. Her coat had regained its luster, and she was able to join me for light jogs through the woods within the limits allowed by my healer."What if we don't pass?" she asked."Then we ask where we need to improve."I switched off the desk lamp. "Let's have breakfast first tomorrow."I used to think that coming to Bordevia meant I had to immediately prove I hadn't made a mistake.Only later did I realize that there were endless records to write here too, along with rejected proposals and evenings when I was so exhausted I just wanted to lie down. But here, I could say I was tired, I could ask for help, and it was okay to temporarily fall short. No one was going to cancel my tomorrow because of it.On the day I signed

A week after our meeting, the foundation sent me a correction statement. The draft stated that due to insufficient communication during early promotions, the contributions of all parties had not been fully presented.Attached was a letter asking me to attend a rescheduled press briefing and take a photo alongside Leon and Livie.I read that sentence twice and sent the document right back. "Please clarify whose name was removed and who made the decision to remove it. A correction does not require my presence for a photo."Leon called me that very day. When I didn't pick up, he sent an audio message. "I didn't draft that statement. I've already asked them to modify it. You don't need to come back."This time, I didn't offer excuses on his behalf for why the board wanted to downplay the issue. It was up to him to explain.Noah sent me the video recording of the next day's meeting.Leon sat at one end of the long table, the original drafts spread out before him.A board member as

Leon apologized to me first. He apologized for the acceptance letter, for the author credits, and for the evaluation he never showed up for.He pushed the board's receipt toward me. "I've already admitted that altering the credits was my decision. The brochure will be reprinted, and I've made things clear with Livie. Her therapy and foundation affairs will be handled by the team in charge from now on."I read through it and nodded. "Please email me the official version once it's updated."As he watched my reaction, his throat bobbed. "I didn't come here just to deliver this.""I know.""About that job offer… I was too selfish."He cast his gaze downward. "When I took over as Alpha, there were endless things to handle every single day. Just knowing I could come home to you, that no matter what happened, you'd be by my side, made me feel like I could keep going."I was terrified that if you went to Bordevia, you'd make new colleagues, start a new life, and slowly realize you didn

It was already dark by the time I landed in Bordevia. As I pulled out my phone, the screen was packed with missed calls. The last thing Leon sent was a photo. On the dining table sat two servings of mushroom risotto, with the wedding ring placed right beside them."Irene, please come back. I'll listen to whatever you want to say."I stared at it for a long time, right until the crowd around the baggage carousel dispersed. My stomach was aching from hunger, and only then did I realize I had only eaten half a slice of bread all day.I put my phone away and bought a cup of coffee at the airport.Halfway through, tears dropped into the cup.I wasn't crying just because of Leon. It was also because, after leaving Serandor, I surprisingly had no idea how to spend an evening that belonged entirely to myself. No one was waiting for my handoff forms, no one needed reminding to take their meds, and there was no dinner that might fall through at any second.I held the cup and slowly fi

Leon's first reaction was that there had been a mistake with the notice. He tried the mind-link once more.In the past, as long as he released even a trace of his scent, I would always respond. Even if I was too busy to speak, Nora would gently nuzzle his wolf, letting him know I heard him. This time, there was nothing. His wolf slammed into that pitch-black void within his consciousness, and the sudden sharp pain made him grab the back of a chair for support.Livie reached out to steady him. "Are you exhausted from last night? I'll have someone take you to the lounge to rest."Leon pulled away from her hand and dialed city hall. The clerk verified his identity and repeated the exact time of the dissolution. "At 9:00 am this morning. The notice you received is valid.""I didn't consent to this.""A forced dissolution does not require the other party's consent."He gripped his phone, suddenly recalling that night a week ago.I had asked him about the offer letter in a very qu

One day left until I leave. On Saturday morning, I retrieved the revision history of the brochure. The medical proposal had always been stored in the project directory I managed. The original drafts, every single revision, and all approval comments were properly archived. The initial deion was clear. "The medical program was designed by Irene Vale, with Livie Grant responsible for public outreach."It was Leon who had requested the change. In the feedback column, he wrote, "Highlight Livie's personal contribution to avoid the public viewing the foundation as an affiliate of the Luna."I redacted the personal details in the case studies, sent the revision history and the original drafts to the board, and requested a correction of the author credits. After processing the last piece of paperwork, I returned to the bedroom to pack my luggage. The long dress I wore at our mating ceremony still hung deep inside the closet.I left the dress right where it was. Instead, I packed my ID
