Chapter 2

Autor: candy
Six days left until I leave.

At 6:00 am, I received the official offer letter that had been hidden from me for an entire year.

The salary, research direction, and start date were all clearly laid out.

Attached was Leon's reply. "My wife has decided to stay in Serandor. Please handle all future communications through me to spare her the burden of choosing between family and work."

He hadn't signed on my behalf.

He had simply used his authority as a husband and Alpha to convince everyone that his choice was mine.

Two nights ago, he still didn't see the issue.

"We'll have other opportunities in the future. You were exhausted back then, and I didn't want you stressing over it."

"Why didn't you tell me I was accepted?" I asked.

He fell silent for a moment, then reached out to touch my shoulder. "I admit I handled it poorly. Once we wrap up the foundation's launch, we'll sit down and talk."

Another wait.

I had spent four years waiting for him.

I saved the original email and the entire forwarded thread.

Then, I replied to Silver Bay Healing Center, clarifying that I had never authorized anyone to reject the offer on my behalf.

The original position couldn't be brought back out of thin air. I attached my recent assessment results and asked if I could still submit a late application for their open short-term fellowship.

With that taken care of, I began handing off my responsibilities.

I transferred the schedule at the pup clinic to the supervisor on duty, passed drug procurement to the pharmacist, and returned the foundation's unfinished medical reviews to the professional committee.

I wasn't going to take my frustration with Leon out on patients awaiting care.

But I had no intention of keeping every position filled on my own either.

At 9:00 am, Beta Noah Gibson called. "Luna Irene, are you really transferring everything out? You've always handled them in previous years."

"In previous years, I took them on as extra responsibilities." I sent off the final handoff sheet. "From now on, please assign them according to official roles."

In the afternoon, I went to the rehab center in the north part of town.

Leon's mother, Martha Terrell, was working on her physical therapy. She had suffered a silver wound two years ago, and her knees still ached on damp days.

I stayed with her through the session and set a new appointment schedule on the table.

"Starting next week, Kate will accompany you. She's a licensed therapy assistant. You've met her before."

Martha took off her glasses. "Do you have other plans?"

"I'm getting back to work."

She didn't answer right away.

On the windowsill stood a photo of Leon as a teenager. Back then, he lacked the fierce edge of an Alpha, and his faint fangs showed when he smiled.

I used to love listening to Martha talk about his past.

I loved it so much that, without realizing when it started, every one of her checkups and preions had automatically become my responsibility.

"But Leon has council meetings next week," she said.

"I've sent him the schedule. He can decide how to arrange his time," I replied.

Martha stared at me for a moment before finally looking down to tuck the schedule away. "Alright. I'll speak to him."

That evening, Leon came home.

Noticing that I was still silent, he reached out and touched my shoulder.

"I never authorized you to decline it for me," I said.

"I've already apologized." He looked at me as if failing to grasp why a simple apology couldn't put everything back the way it was.

"You're the one I love. You're my mate. None of that has ever changed."

His phone rang right on cue. Livie's name lit up the screen.

Leon declined it once.

When it rang a second time, he answered.

She said she was struggling with the voiceover for the foundation's promo video. The deadline was tomorrow, and sitting alone in the recording studio was making her panic.

Leon closed his eyes. "I'll be there in 20 minutes."

When he hung up, he turned to me. "I gave my word to handle this. We'll have a serious talk once I get back."

I didn't ask anything more. He grabbed his car keys and left.

  • One-Way Ticket Away From My Alpha   Chapter 9

When my three-month fellowship came to an end, I passed the retention evaluation. The night before the results were announced, I was too nervous to sleep and kept flipping through the materials I had prepared.Nora lay by my pillow, her tail brushing against my hand. Her coat had regained its luster, and she was able to join me for light jogs through the woods within the limits allowed by my healer."What if we don't pass?" she asked."Then we ask where we need to improve."I switched off the desk lamp. "Let's have breakfast first tomorrow."I used to think that coming to Bordevia meant I had to immediately prove I hadn't made a mistake.Only later did I realize that there were endless records to write here too, along with rejected proposals and evenings when I was so exhausted I just wanted to lie down. But here, I could say I was tired, I could ask for help, and it was okay to temporarily fall short. No one was going to cancel my tomorrow because of it.On the day I signed

A week after our meeting, the foundation sent me a correction statement. The draft stated that due to insufficient communication during early promotions, the contributions of all parties had not been fully presented.Attached was a letter asking me to attend a rescheduled press briefing and take a photo alongside Leon and Livie.I read that sentence twice and sent the document right back. "Please clarify whose name was removed and who made the decision to remove it. A correction does not require my presence for a photo."Leon called me that very day. When I didn't pick up, he sent an audio message. "I didn't draft that statement. I've already asked them to modify it. You don't need to come back."This time, I didn't offer excuses on his behalf for why the board wanted to downplay the issue. It was up to him to explain.Noah sent me the video recording of the next day's meeting.Leon sat at one end of the long table, the original drafts spread out before him.A board member as

Leon apologized to me first. He apologized for the acceptance letter, for the author credits, and for the evaluation he never showed up for.He pushed the board's receipt toward me. "I've already admitted that altering the credits was my decision. The brochure will be reprinted, and I've made things clear with Livie. Her therapy and foundation affairs will be handled by the team in charge from now on."I read through it and nodded. "Please email me the official version once it's updated."As he watched my reaction, his throat bobbed. "I didn't come here just to deliver this.""I know.""About that job offer… I was too selfish."He cast his gaze downward. "When I took over as Alpha, there were endless things to handle every single day. Just knowing I could come home to you, that no matter what happened, you'd be by my side, made me feel like I could keep going."I was terrified that if you went to Bordevia, you'd make new colleagues, start a new life, and slowly realize you didn

It was already dark by the time I landed in Bordevia. As I pulled out my phone, the screen was packed with missed calls. The last thing Leon sent was a photo. On the dining table sat two servings of mushroom risotto, with the wedding ring placed right beside them."Irene, please come back. I'll listen to whatever you want to say."I stared at it for a long time, right until the crowd around the baggage carousel dispersed. My stomach was aching from hunger, and only then did I realize I had only eaten half a slice of bread all day.I put my phone away and bought a cup of coffee at the airport.Halfway through, tears dropped into the cup.I wasn't crying just because of Leon. It was also because, after leaving Serandor, I surprisingly had no idea how to spend an evening that belonged entirely to myself. No one was waiting for my handoff forms, no one needed reminding to take their meds, and there was no dinner that might fall through at any second.I held the cup and slowly fi

Leon's first reaction was that there had been a mistake with the notice. He tried the mind-link once more.In the past, as long as he released even a trace of his scent, I would always respond. Even if I was too busy to speak, Nora would gently nuzzle his wolf, letting him know I heard him. This time, there was nothing. His wolf slammed into that pitch-black void within his consciousness, and the sudden sharp pain made him grab the back of a chair for support.Livie reached out to steady him. "Are you exhausted from last night? I'll have someone take you to the lounge to rest."Leon pulled away from her hand and dialed city hall. The clerk verified his identity and repeated the exact time of the dissolution. "At 9:00 am this morning. The notice you received is valid.""I didn't consent to this.""A forced dissolution does not require the other party's consent."He gripped his phone, suddenly recalling that night a week ago.I had asked him about the offer letter in a very qu

One day left until I leave. On Saturday morning, I retrieved the revision history of the brochure. The medical proposal had always been stored in the project directory I managed. The original drafts, every single revision, and all approval comments were properly archived. The initial deion was clear. "The medical program was designed by Irene Vale, with Livie Grant responsible for public outreach."It was Leon who had requested the change. In the feedback column, he wrote, "Highlight Livie's personal contribution to avoid the public viewing the foundation as an affiliate of the Luna."I redacted the personal details in the case studies, sent the revision history and the original drafts to the board, and requested a correction of the author credits. After processing the last piece of paperwork, I returned to the bedroom to pack my luggage. The long dress I wore at our mating ceremony still hung deep inside the closet.I left the dress right where it was. Instead, I packed my ID
