Chapter 4

Autor: candy
One day left until I leave.

On Saturday morning, I retrieved the revision history of the brochure.

The medical proposal had always been stored in the project directory I managed. The original drafts, every single revision, and all approval comments were properly archived.

The initial deion was clear. "The medical program was designed by Irene Vale, with Livie Grant responsible for public outreach."

It was Leon who had requested the change.

In the feedback column, he wrote, "Highlight Livie's personal contribution to avoid the public viewing the foundation as an affiliate of the Luna."

I redacted the personal details in the case studies, sent the revision history and the original drafts to the board, and requested a correction of the author credits.

After processing the last piece of paperwork, I returned to the bedroom to pack my luggage.

The long dress I wore at our mating ceremony still hung deep inside the closet.

I left the dress right where it was. Instead, I packed my IDs and manus from the drawer into my suitcase one by one.

I placed the application receipt at the very top of my luggage, tucked the suitcase back into the wardrobe, and booked a car for the morning.

At 8:00 pm, Leon brought Livie home.

She sat at the edge of the living room, her fingers twisting the strap of her bag. "Irene, I didn't know they would introduce it that way. I just wanted to get Troy's foundation running right."

I didn't ask how much she actually knew. "The original files have been handed over to the board. They'll verify them."

Livie looked toward Leon.

He stepped forward, blocking her view of me. "The credits can be changed. Can we just let tomorrow's event proceed normally, please?"

"I didn't ask to cancel the event," I argued.

"But the materials you sent the board will make everyone think she stole your work."

I looked at him. "Which part of that isn't true?"

His jaw tightened.

Livie murmured, "Maybe I should just step down. I don't want you two fighting over me…"

"This isn't your fault." Leon was quick to step in. "Irene, I was the one who approved it."

His tone softened. "I thought we were a family, so we didn't need to divide things so clearly. Making the foundation succeed is a win for our pack too."

"Then tell the board the truth, that you're the one who changed it," I said.

He glanced at Livie. Her face was pale, and her eyes were already red.

"After tomorrow," he said.

I nodded. "You can choose the time. I'll have the driver pick you up tomorrow morning. You don't have to speak. Just attend with me."

I didn't bring up the dissolution application.

Finally, he said, "See you tomorrow."

The day of departure had arrived.

At 7:00 am, I turned off the morning wake-up reminder I had set for Leon.

A final handoff list was stuck to the refrigerator, detailing Martha's physical therapy contacts and the household services that needed renewing.

There was no farewell letter.

I took off my wedding ring and left it in the entryway tray along with my Luna badge.

I dropped the keys into the hallway tray, pulled my suitcase, and stepped into the elevator.

My phone chimed with a message from Leon. "Your seat is still next to mine. Don't forget to wear your Luna badge."

As the car drove through the rain-washed streets, Nora didn't turn back to search for his scent for the first time.

She asked me if the apartment in Bordevia had windows.

"It does," I said, looking at the photos on my phone. "Right by the bed. It gets the morning sun."

At 9:00 am, the car heading to the airport was crossing the overpass.

The mark on the side of my neck suddenly flared with heat, and a sharp pain tore through my chest. I doubled over, gripping my coat.

Nora whimpered deep in my consciousness.

I had the driver pull over, took the medication the healer prescribed, and waited out the worst of the wave.

Just then, my phone lit up. A single line of text flashed from Werewolf City Hall. "The mate bond has been successfully dissolved."

Immediately after, Leon's call came through.

I didn't pick up.

Another text popped up. "The driver says you're not home. Irene, where are you?"

I silenced my phone and dropped it back into my bag.

When my breathing finally steadied, I buckled my seatbelt again. "To the airport."

…

At the same time, at the foundation venue, Leon clutched his chest, repeatedly dialing the number that kept ringing out.

Noah hurried over. "Alpha Leon, the board has suspended the promotional video. The original drafts sent by Luna Irene have been verified, and you need to explain the order to alter the author credits."

Livie called out to him in a soft voice.

This time, Leon didn't answer her.

On his phone, the driver had just sent a photo.

In the entryway tray, right beside the keys, sat the wedding ring and the Luna badge.

Popping up right beneath it was the dissolution notice from Werewolf City Hall.

The applicant's name was Irene Vale, and the application date was seven days ago.

Leon jerked to his feet, trying to reach me through the mind-link.

But the link—the one that always used to have someone waiting to answer, no matter how late it was—was completely dead.

When my three-month fellowship came to an end, I passed the retention evaluation. The night before the results were announced, I was too nervous to sleep and kept flipping through the materials I had prepared.Nora lay by my pillow, her tail brushing against my hand. Her coat had regained its luster, and she was able to join me for light jogs through the woods within the limits allowed by my healer."What if we don't pass?" she asked."Then we ask where we need to improve."I switched off the desk lamp. "Let's have breakfast first tomorrow."I used to think that coming to Bordevia meant I had to immediately prove I hadn't made a mistake.Only later did I realize that there were endless records to write here too, along with rejected proposals and evenings when I was so exhausted I just wanted to lie down. But here, I could say I was tired, I could ask for help, and it was okay to temporarily fall short. No one was going to cancel my tomorrow because of it.On the day I signed

A week after our meeting, the foundation sent me a correction statement. The draft stated that due to insufficient communication during early promotions, the contributions of all parties had not been fully presented.Attached was a letter asking me to attend a rescheduled press briefing and take a photo alongside Leon and Livie.I read that sentence twice and sent the document right back. "Please clarify whose name was removed and who made the decision to remove it. A correction does not require my presence for a photo."Leon called me that very day. When I didn't pick up, he sent an audio message. "I didn't draft that statement. I've already asked them to modify it. You don't need to come back."This time, I didn't offer excuses on his behalf for why the board wanted to downplay the issue. It was up to him to explain.Noah sent me the video recording of the next day's meeting.Leon sat at one end of the long table, the original drafts spread out before him.A board member as

Leon apologized to me first. He apologized for the acceptance letter, for the author credits, and for the evaluation he never showed up for.He pushed the board's receipt toward me. "I've already admitted that altering the credits was my decision. The brochure will be reprinted, and I've made things clear with Livie. Her therapy and foundation affairs will be handled by the team in charge from now on."I read through it and nodded. "Please email me the official version once it's updated."As he watched my reaction, his throat bobbed. "I didn't come here just to deliver this.""I know.""About that job offer… I was too selfish."He cast his gaze downward. "When I took over as Alpha, there were endless things to handle every single day. Just knowing I could come home to you, that no matter what happened, you'd be by my side, made me feel like I could keep going."I was terrified that if you went to Bordevia, you'd make new colleagues, start a new life, and slowly realize you didn

It was already dark by the time I landed in Bordevia. As I pulled out my phone, the screen was packed with missed calls. The last thing Leon sent was a photo. On the dining table sat two servings of mushroom risotto, with the wedding ring placed right beside them."Irene, please come back. I'll listen to whatever you want to say."I stared at it for a long time, right until the crowd around the baggage carousel dispersed. My stomach was aching from hunger, and only then did I realize I had only eaten half a slice of bread all day.I put my phone away and bought a cup of coffee at the airport.Halfway through, tears dropped into the cup.I wasn't crying just because of Leon. It was also because, after leaving Serandor, I surprisingly had no idea how to spend an evening that belonged entirely to myself. No one was waiting for my handoff forms, no one needed reminding to take their meds, and there was no dinner that might fall through at any second.I held the cup and slowly fi

Leon's first reaction was that there had been a mistake with the notice. He tried the mind-link once more.In the past, as long as he released even a trace of his scent, I would always respond. Even if I was too busy to speak, Nora would gently nuzzle his wolf, letting him know I heard him. This time, there was nothing. His wolf slammed into that pitch-black void within his consciousness, and the sudden sharp pain made him grab the back of a chair for support.Livie reached out to steady him. "Are you exhausted from last night? I'll have someone take you to the lounge to rest."Leon pulled away from her hand and dialed city hall. The clerk verified his identity and repeated the exact time of the dissolution. "At 9:00 am this morning. The notice you received is valid.""I didn't consent to this.""A forced dissolution does not require the other party's consent."He gripped his phone, suddenly recalling that night a week ago.I had asked him about the offer letter in a very qu
