Chapter 8 As You Wish

Elizabeth Liang eventually went to the hospital with James Lu, she didn't even know why she followed him. Perhaps she simply had nothing left to worry about anymore.

The doctor was a woman in her forties. She looked at Elizabeth's forehead and swollen eyes, and then she looked at James in front of her. She asked Elizabeth, "He hit you?"

Elizabeth opened her mouth but said nothing. She just shook her head.

James's face twisted upon hearing this. "Do you think it's the appropriate time for this?"

The doctor glanced at him with scornful eyes, "Hey, are you roaring at me? After hitting your girlfriend?"

"No doctor, you misunderstood."

"You..." James wanted to say something else, but his phone rang at the same time. When he took it out and saw the name on the screen, his expression changed. Then he said to Elizabeth, "I have to answer the phone." and walked out.

"Is he having an affair outside? He doesn't answer the phone in front of you." The doctor said with her head shaking.

Elizabeth didn't want to run her mouth, but wasn't this woman a bit too creative?

"You really misunderstood. He and I are just... just strangers. He brought me here to help me. It's not what you think."

When she said the word "strangers", she paused. They're strangers, right? After all, she knows nothing about him other than his name. But maybe they're more than strangers, since what had happened between them...

The doctor seemed a little embarrassed and tried to gloss it over. "I suppose there's still better than evil in this world." Then she stopped talking and focused on the wound on her forehead.

James stood on the landing and lit a cigarette. Looking at the phone in his hand, he didn't know if he should pick it up.

Then the phone didn't ring. And it took a long time it didn't ring again. He let out a sign, feeling disappointed.

She was always like this, never having enough patience for him.

He finished the cigarette in his hand and turned around when the phone rang again.

It was still the same name and the same number.

This time, he grinned slightly.

She stood him up yesterday, so is she trying to appease him today?

Thinking of this, he answered with expectation.

"Hello—"

"James, are you busy? Are you in the middle of something?" A gentle female voice sounded from the other end of the phone.

"I'm not."

"I'm sorry... about yesterday..."

As he heard her voice, James's anger from being stood up faded. "Well then, think about how you're gonna make up for it. How about taking me to that new French restaurant?" Pleased, he took out another cigarette.

"James, that might not happen for a while... I'm with him now..."

James's movements stopped and his heart sank. Irritated, he took out the cigarette from his mouth and crumpled it up.

With him?

"What do you mean?"

The person on the other end of the phone was immersed in joy. "James, after so many years, I finally... went to a hotel with him today..."

James wanted to laugh, but he couldn't move his lips. He took out another cigarette but the lighter seemed to be kaput. He had to press it several times to light up.

He took a heavy drag on his cigarette, his good mood had disappeared completely. He asked coolly, "So?"

"Sorry, I couldn't fulfill our promise. He is the only one for me..."

WTF! James tried very hard to prevent himself from throwing the phone.

"He is the only one?" He almost shouted out of anger, "What about me? You said yes to my proposal yesterday. I have told my parents. They are picking the wedding day for us. And now you tell me you are with another man?"

"James, I'm sorry... you... you'll find another girl to marry... James, are you listening?"

"Find another girl to marry?" He finished the cigarette in a few mouthfuls, then chuckled and replied, "Fine! As you wish!"

Then he hung up heavily, thinking of the past days with the woman, he couldn't help but burst into laughter. After a long time, he stopped laughing, slamming the phone into the ground.

The phone shattered loudly, just like James Lu's heart.
