Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
Lionel walked down the corridor, turned into the obstetrics wing, and slipped into the stairwell.

Only one door was closed.

Iris stood outside it. From where she was, she could clearly see a petite girl with delicate features.

It was Pamela.

When Lionel saw her, he frowned slightly. "Why are you here?"

Pamela pouted and lowered her head, but her eyes tilted up toward him, full of grievance.

"I woke up before dawn, and you were gone. I got scared."

Her eyes were already filling with tears as she spoke.

Lionel looked pained. He gently pulled her into his arms.

"What's there to be scared of? I'm not going anywhere."

Pamela rubbed her cheek against his chest. "It's not just that. I missed you."

Lionel rubbed the top of her head indulgently. "Since when did you get this clingy?"

Pamela didn't answer. She looked up at him like a puppy, her eyes overflowing with affection.

That kind of look was dangerous.

It was exactly how Iris used to look at him.

"Lionel, do you love me?"

The moment Pamela asked that, Iris instinctively slowed her breathing. Her heart lifted painfully into her throat.

Lionel's gaze darkened. He pressed his lips together, said nothing, then suddenly shoved Pamela back against the wall and kissed her hard.

As if that wasn't enough, he moved to her neck, sucking lightly and leaving a trail of red marks behind.

Iris's eyes burned. She felt as if her heart was being yanked apart, leaving her unable to breathe.

This was how Lionel looked when he was overwhelmed by desire. Back then, when she looked at him that way, he had lost control just the same.

She took a deep breath and turned to leave.

However, Pamela's next words stopped her cold.

"Lionel, I'm pregnant. You have to take responsibility."

Iris instinctively looked toward Lionel.

His body stiffened as shock flashed across his face. Then unmistakable joy surged in his eyes, followed by a conflicted frown.

Iris knew that Lionel had always wanted a child of his own.

She didn't listen any further and went back to her room.

Twenty minutes later, Lionel returned, carrying two bowls of chicken soup.

"How are you feeling? Any better?"

He set the soup down and bent toward her, trying to kiss her forehead.

Iris frowned and turned her head away.

Lionel froze, confusion written all over his face.

"I'm hungry. Let's eat."

After a long pause, Lionel slowly straightened up, looking like he wanted to say something but didn't know how.

"Honey, you've seemed down these past few days. Did something happen? If something's wrong, tell me. I'll handle it."

As he spoke, he opened the soup and held it out to her.

Iris took it and said calmly, "It's nothing. Probably just not feeling well."

Hearing that, Lionel finally relaxed, the panic in his chest easing.

Iris stayed in the hospital one more night and was discharged the next day.

Over the following days, she stayed home organizing the fragments of their past.

Birthday gifts they had exchanged. Anniversary presents.

Photos from trips they'd taken together. Train tickets, admission stubs, little souvenirs they had picked up along the way.

Movie stubs, concert tickets, entry passes to events…

Looking at the massive pile of memories, Iris felt dazed.

So much had happened in six years.

She glanced toward the living room sofa, where Lionel sat listening to a CD. The disc spun slowly as music filled the room.

Yet Lionel, usually completely absorbed whenever he listened to music, was staring blankly at his phone.

He hadn't gone out much these days, but his mind was clearly elsewhere.

On his screen was an ultrasound image.

Iris glanced once, then looked away.

At lunch, Lionel got a call from a friend who was the MV director.

"Lionel, the MV's views just hit another record! We should celebrate. Bring your girlfriend, too."

Lionel panicked and shot a nervous look at Iris. Seeing that she showed no reaction, as if she hadn't heard, he finally let out a breath and agreed.

After he left that afternoon, Iris messaged her lawyer and said she was coming to pick up the divorce papers.

Lionel's eyes slowly came back into focus, a trace of warmth finally returning to his face."What did he say?"Albert replied, "He said to meet him tomorrow morning at nine. Heritage House. He wants to talk in detail."That night, even though Lionel was drunk, he slept badly. He woke up at 7 a.m., cleaned himself up, and headed straight to Heritage House. At 9 a.m., the man arrived right on time.He was from Ruiseland, spoke fluent English, and went by the name Eira Caedros. They shook hands politely, sat down, and got straight to the point."You said you can help me find my wife?" Lionel asked."Yes. First, I need you to tell me how you met, and then how you realized she disappeared."Lionel told him everything, from the day he met Iris to the moment she vanished, leaving out nothing.Eira lowered his head and thought for a while before speaking."I can confirm that your wife was an external traveler. She carried a system and came to this world to complete a task. You were h

Lionel sat on the sand at Whalers' Bay, the deep blue ocean stretching out in front of him. An overturned crate of empty beer bottles was scattered all around. In the corner of Whalers' Bay, the glass of an old, run-down visitor center was mottled and stained. Yet inside it, the melody of Only You played cheerfully, completely out of place.Lionel listened to the rhythm and unconsciously hummed along, then suddenly stopped. A bitter, self-mocking smile flickered across his face. He tipped his head back, taking a hard gulp of liquor.A young couple walked past behind him. Just a second earlier, the girl had been striking poses while the guy took photos. The moment she recognized Lionel's face, she rushed over, grabbed her boyfriend's arm, and whispered excitedly, "Isn't that Lionel? He's the cheating singer everyone's been talking about lately!"The guy froze, then realized it. "Oh, yeah. The one you told me about. You even said if I ever cheated, you'd kill me."The girl burst o

Iris woke from a hazy void and realized she was lying flat on a stretch of sand. She squinted against the light, waited for her eyes to adjust, then slowly sat up and looked around.Whalers' Bay?No. This was Bayview Beach from her original world, the last place she had been before she crossed into the other one.She stood and stared at the endless shoreline, her mind drifting. It was still the ocean, but it felt completely different.A soft chime sounded in her head, followed by the system's voice. [Dear Iris, you have returned to your original world. In this world, all the rewards from the Wish System you previously completed have already been fulfilled. From this moment on, your system journey has officially come to an end. Goodbye!]A flash of white light filled her vision, and a sharp ache pulsed at her temples, then her head felt suddenly light. The system was gone.Iris stood there for a long time, stunned, before remembering what her wish had been. After six years i

"I love her. That's real. There's no acting in it at all. She gave me a second life. I can't lose her. Only You belongs to her alone. But…"At that point, Lionel's voice started to shake. He took several deep breaths before he could steady himself."But I still betrayed her. Six years together, three years married. I wasn't satisfied with the calm and ordinary. I cheated with the lead actress from the Only You music video, because she looked too much like my wife when she was younger."She was very direct about admiring me and how much I loved my wife, and she envied my wife for having a husband like me. She kept getting closer, dropping hints. I lost my composure and made a terrible mistake."I want to apologize again. I fully understand how wrong I was. I swear I'll never do it again. You can all hold me to that. And… I'm asking everyone to help me find my wife. She may have gone into the ocean. She's missing."The room fell silent for two seconds, then erupted into murmurs. N

"You really crossed the line," Lionel hissed at Pamela. "How dare you provoke Iris! If you were going to get rid of the baby, how could I let you walk away without suffering a little?"With that, he flung her chin away hard, pulled out a tissue, and wiped his fingers in disgust. No matter how Pamela screamed behind him, he never looked back and walked straight out of the hospital. The moment he got back into the car, his agency boss called."Lionel, what's going on with this cheating scandal? Have you lost your mind? You made a mistake like that and then exposed yourself?"Lionel took a deep breath. "I cheated. It was my mistake. Instead of letting someone dig it up and blow it up online, I'd rather say it myself. At least that limits the damage."There was a long silence on the other end, then a sigh. "Fine. Come to the office. We'll talk about damage control."The call ended. Lionel rubbed his temples, a deep sense of exhaustion washing over him.Ever since Iris disappeare

"You just wouldn't come out, huh? What, you finally realize you've done too many shady things, and now you're scared?""You even lied to us about being betrayed by your boyfriend, saying you were just trying to protect the baby. How did you even say that with a straight face? Do you even have a conscience?""Exactly! We trusted you, and you used us like tools!"The angrier they got, the more heated it became. Some fans lost control and started throwing punches.Once one person did it, the rest rushed in after them. The scene fell into complete chaos.Lionel stood off to the side, watching coldly. Someone spotted him and swung at him, too."You're no good, either! You built this perfect image as the devoted husband, and look at you now! You're just a jerk!"Pain flared across Lionel's face, but he didn't fight back. He didn't try to stop them either. They weren't wrong. He was a jerk. The chaos lasted about five minutes, until Pamela suddenly doubled over in unbearable pain. B
