Chapter 2

Penulis: Milky Dream
I glanced at the empty seat across from me. "Of course, sit." Inside, I gave Alicia a mental thumbs-up.

No wonder she'd sworn she was going after William—girl staged that "accidental run-in" like a pro.

***

Alicia tried hard to keep the convo alive, but William barely said a word. Only perked up when she brought up schoolwork. Eventually, she bailed, tray still half-full.

Figured lunch must've sat heavy in her stomach.

As I watched her leave, a hand clamped on my head and spun me around.

I plastered on a sheepish grin.

William. Arms crossed. Face saying, 'start talking.'

"I just... noticed the campus queen had a thing for you, so I figured I'd play wingman. What if it worked out?"

He gave me a weird look. "Well, that was a waste of time."

I gawked. "Seriously? Alicia's gorgeous and you're not even interested? Either you've got no taste, or your standards are nuts."

He actually thought about it. "Sweet, gentle types aren't my thing. And I don't like people who waste food."

I stared. That was it?

Not your type—fine. But knocking her for wasting food? Dude, you iced her out so hard she couldn't eat.

I screamed that in my head. Out loud, I just kept nodding.

Still, I wasn't discouraged. The plan only bombed because I had no clue what kind of person William actually liked.

Couldn't just straight-up ask him—too obvious.

So I went fishing for answers from Jace.

Jace, the campus flirt. Always bragging about his 'plenty of girls, no strings' lifestyle. He hopped from girl to girl like it was a sport—always had one on his arm. If anyone knew, it was him.

That night I laid it out to him.

He cleared his throat. "You came to the right guy. Look, cute's got nothing on sexy. A dude like William—looks proper, secretly repressed? He'd totally fall for that type."

I cracked up.

***

Later, I scrolled through candid shots of Brittany Saxey on the forum.

Wavy hair, delicate face, slim curves, legs for days—walking head-turner. I stared at the screen, then at William, buried in prep for the Tech Startup Contest.

'Lucky you,' I smirked.

Finding out she'd once slipped him a love letter made my chest tighten.

Not that I was ugly. So why wasn't anyone chasing me?

I sulked over it while we walked, then asked him.

He gave me a once-over. "Your features are small. Face too. Makes you look super young. Honestly? First time I saw you, I thought you were some high schooler dropping off your older brother."

Yeah, message received—I was everybody's little brother.

"But you've got good looks," he added. "Especially your eyes. Shape's perfect. Really attractive."

He flashed a quick smile and walked ahead.

A few steps later, he glanced back. "I mean it. Your eyes are really pretty."

The sun hit his hair just right, turning it gold. Tall, gorgeous—my heart stuttered.

Crap. Was William actually flirting? No proof, but still.

I jogged up and smacked his arm, pretending to brush it off.

For days after, I kept slipping Brittany into conversation. Showed him pics, dropped random details.

Every time, he froze for a beat. Once, he even asked what I thought of her.

Yeah, felt like perfect timing to finally set them up.

"I warned you. You two were never gonna last. Two guys together? What a joke. In the end, this is YOUR OWN FAULT."'Your own fault.'The words froze me.***Even if I ran after William now and spilled everything—would he even listen? And if he did... my original motive was still trash. Would he really forgive me?I didn't dare hope. After that day, things between us tanked.Even Jace and Steve could feel it in the dorm. One afternoon, Jace pulled me aside. Asked what was up with William. That one question cracked me wide open. I told him everything—how it started, how it blew up.He just said, "Isaac, maybe he's been waiting for you to find him."Then he mentioned William would be at the student council office tomorrow. So the next day, I showed up. Knocked.Inside, a couple council members looked up. William was there too."Can we help you with something?" one of them asked.I took a breath. "I need to talk to William. Just us."Awkward glances. Then William said, "Yo

The table was buzzing—until Christy opened her mouth."William never brings friends. Isaac must be special. Why don't you tell us what makes you so impressive? We'd love to know why William thinks so highly of you."Her fake-sweet tone killed the vibe instantly.I started, "I—""I already know how good he is. Don't need anyone else weighing in," William cut me off. "But you, Christy—don't you think you're talking a little too much?"His gaze swept the table. "Anyone I care about is important. Period."Silence.Christy's smile cracked, but she shut up."Let's eat." William dropped a few shrimp onto my plate.I stared at them, warmth creeping through my chest.***Days slid by fine—until Christy came at me.She stood there, perfect makeup, eyes dripping disdain. "How someone like you got his attention is beyond me."Two guys? That's not love, it's a fling. In the end, it won't be you next to William—it'll be me."Do yourself a favor and quit now. Because once he wakes up, y

I hadn't even stepped inside when I spotted him—locked in, tinkering with some weird gadget while talking. But what made me freeze? The girl next to him.She was in a sweatshirt that matched his, eyes wide like she was hanging on every word. And yeah, I wasn't imagining it—the way she looked at him? Total heart-eyes. Girl was down bad.Steve caught me staring and leaned in. "That's Christy Neard. Big deal on the team—crazy good with numbers, never screws up the data."Then, lower: "Rumor is she fell for William after his opening ceremony speech. Some say she joined the team just to orbit him."Not far away—William and Christy, deep in conversation. Talented guy, gorgeous girl. They looked... right. And just like that, my mood tanked. Sour as hell."I just remembered something. I'm gonna head out," I muttered, already turning before Steve could ask.***I'd gone too far. Even I almost believed this relationship was real.Time to cut it off before I completely lost myself.I

"C-Couple."William chuckled softly, lifting our hands between us."So what's wrong with holding hands with my partner?"I couldn't come up with a single excuse, so I let him keep holding on.We walked back to the dorm, fingers still linked. Of course, right at the door, we ran into Jace—water bottle in hand.I dropped William's hand like it burned. Jace's brows shot up, but before he could say a thing, I hit him with a quick "hey" and shut it down.William and I had already agreed to keep this a secret, so I wasn't worried he'd blab. I slipped past them both straight into the room.***And just like that, William and I were a thing.I had to admit—dating him was... weird. He actually planned real dates. Holidays? Dragged me up trails to watch the sunrise paint cliffs gold. Weekends? Trips to Harborcrest for ocean views. He even helped me organize my notes.Ignore the part where he demanded kisses as payment, and he was basically the perfect boyfriend.Okay... maybe a cling

I panicked, shoving him back."Okay, okay, I get it. We're both dudes—personal space, man!"And then I bolted.***Two failed tries later, I finally cracked William's type. This time, I dragged someone over to meet him.The second I made the intro, his gaze locked on her face—her eyes, actually. They looked way too much like mine. His jaw tightened, vein twitching.Uh oh.I was about to bail when he muttered a quick "Sorry" to her and yanked me into a corner.I opened my mouth, ready to swear I'd stop meddling—But he beat me to it."Isaac, do you like me?"My whole system short-circuited. Words? Gone. I just stared, frozen, wide-eyed.We were crammed into this corner, barely space between us. His scent hit me—minty, light, too much up close. My face burned. My breath caught hot and heavy, crawling through me."You're always chasing me down," he said. "Dragging me into games, sneaking me out, digging around about my type, sizing up anyone who likes me, even stalking me..

I picked a busy street for the vibe and set their meet-up for the next day.***I got there early and ducked behind a stall. When Brittany and William showed up and actually seemed to click, I called his phone, layering on fake stress. "Uh... something came up. Club leader dumped a last-minute task on me. Can't make it. You two hang without me."He hesitated.I cut him off fast. "Gotta go, he's calling again." Hung up.William looked around.I sank lower. For a second, I swore his eyes flicked my way... maybe just paranoia.Tugging my baseball cap down, I finally felt a little safer. The smell of fried cheese curds from a truck nearby had my stomach growling.I watched them: snacking, watching street shows, Brittany trying on accessories while William stood there smiling like the perfect boyfriend. They looked like a couple.Something twisted in my gut. Guess this is how Batman felt when Robin got a girlfriend.I shook the thought away, but when I looked up—poof. They were
