Marie looked at her reflection in the mirror once more before finally being satisfied with her appearance. From outside her room, she heard a small commotion emanating from the kitchen along with the sweet scent of butter that spreads into her room, provoking the sound of her hungry stomach just by smelling the scent of butter earlier. As she tried to restrain herself, to remain calm in the eyes of the man who has officially become her husband since a month ago—Keith Gilbert—who seemed to have just finished making breakfast for her.
She hoped that a year would be enough to make the man who had just served the butter-fried rice on the plate that was on the dining table to love her back, just as she had loved him from the first sight of their meeting at the cafe where her husband worked. Indeed, she proposed a contract marriage to the man after she heard from Aura—the name of the woman who worked at the same cafe as Keith—saying that he did not like commitment, which made her change the tactic of her approach to get him. Using the coldest possible excuse she could do to make the man believe what she said, she succeeded in getting him to accept her proposal. At least, for now, that was more than enough for her. All she had to do was move slowly so that the man would not suspect her true intentions.
"Breakfast is ready, Marie."
She tightened her blazer while staring at the fried rice, which managed to whet her appetite but still put on her flat face. "I told you so many times. No need to bother yourself preparing for our breakfast. We have Peony who will cook for us."
"I can't do that. Homemade food is much better than eating out or take out. Besides, you never eat Peony's cooking and always eating out, so I only seized a small part of her task."
"Suit yourself. As long as you didn't make trouble for me like that time,” she said, although she held herself back from squealing with joy, knowing that the man realized she never ate at home. To be honest, she felt guilty until now. Because of her selfishness and insensitivity, she made Keith hospitalized for two days due to exhaustion. If she had not realized it earlier then, maybe she would never see Keith again for good now.
"I’m sorry. I'll make sure it won't happen again in the future," the man made a regretful face at her before returning to the kitchen.
Still trying to maintain a calm demeanour, she ate the food with grace. There was no need to rush, as she still had an hour to reach her office, which was only fifteen minutes away if she was driving her Volkswagen XL1.
"Should I also make a lunch box for your lunch?" asked Keith, who was still in the kitchen.
"No need. I'm eating out today.”
"Okay."
She felt that the man was still keeping a distance from her from the first day of their wedding. What else could she do? The man who was her husband for now only considered their marriage to be nothing more than a symbiotic mutualism relationship that would end in a year. She ate the fried rice solemnly. The taste was just right. It met her taste perfectly. Since the death of her mother and living with her father who was rarely at home, she has never eaten homemade cooking anymore. To be honest, she was a little surprised when she tasted Keith's cooking for the first time as it reminded her of her mother's cooking when her mother was alive. Although she did not expect him to be so good at cooking. All she just wanted for him to make his life more comfortable while enjoying his life as her husband. As simple as that, so she was reluctant at first when she knew he could cook.
"Do you have a plan later for this afternoon?"
Keith, who had just finished taking off his apron and pulled up his chair to sit down, stared at her in confusion. "Yes, but not so important, so I can cancel it. What's wrong?"
"There will be a big family gathering at my paternal grandfather's residence, and I have to come as I will introduce you to my extended paternal family," she said. In fact, she was somewhat reluctant to come to her grandfather's mansion every month because when she went there, she would not get anything but insults from her paternal family. Her father's entire extended family did not like her existence since her father chose to marry her mother, who came from ordinary and orphaned circles, not from the upper class. But she was forced to come because of her father's request, who was reluctant to refuse her grandfather's invitation. "I'll be home before three in the afternoon, so I want you to be ready when I pick you up later."
There was no answer from Keith as the man was closing his eyes with his lips moving to chant a blessing as soon as he sat in his chair. Then when he finished, the man opened his eyes and began to eat his food. "I know my job. Don't worry."
"Good," she sipped her mineral water after she finished the butter-fried rice, getting out of her chair. "I'm leaving first.”Even though she had given him what she thought the man wanted. House, credit card with no limit for him, everything. Why did she keep feeling that man was keeping his distance?
"Be careful on your way. Have a nice day."She did not reply to him back as she was busy with her own mind. Deep in her heart, she did not like Keith's doll-like attitude in front of her. Was there something wrong with her approach? Maybe she should contact Patricia Caroline—her best friend from college—to give her some advice that might help her change Keith's attitude toward her.She hoped so.

That noon, it rained heavily, hence she—who originally planned to have lunch at a restaurant with an open roof, was forced to change her place to her usual bistro near her office, which served a lunch menu that tasted very tasteless on her tongue now. Whereas in the past she always bought the food at this place. Whether for her breakfast, her lunch, or her dinner. But now, all she just wanted to eat was Keith's food which always managed to whet her appetite.Because of that, she only ordered a glass of mix-fruit juice for her lunch menu. At least, it was much better than having to torture her tongue to eat that bland food.In front of her, Patricia was slicing the grilled chicken she ordered and stared at her in amazement when she saw her lunch menu."Are you on diet?""Yes," she lied. "I gained two kilograms today.""As most people say, the diet resolution will only last for three days. Like me
All the people that gathering in the room wearing their suit with scary facial expressions walked out of the meeting room at the western headquarters of the Aldebrando family, leaving Keith who was yawning wide while massaging between his brows that were twitching from forcing himself to stay awake since the morning. Only today could he find time to sleep at two in the morning and wake up at six in the morning, preparing breakfast for Marie. What a tiring new job. Luckily he requested a separate room from the woman, making it easier for him to do his work from home without getting Marie's suspicions."Do you want to take a rest for a bit, Boss?" asked Alan, looking at him worried. He shook his head lightly, resting his head on the table. His eyes were closed. "I can't. I have
"What you are wearing now is still too formal. Change to the other one."Marie waved her hand, putting on a sour look as he had just finished changing into a semi-formal outfit that he thought would be suitable for attending a large scale family event. He felt a bit nervous actually, considering that since their marriage, he had never visited his wife's extended family. And today he had the opportunity to find out what the Hermann family looked like. The woman seldom talked about her family to this day. Only once did the woman talk about her family, and it was only the matter of inviting his father-in-law and his wife's cousin to their wedding. No more than that.Because of this reason, he welcomed the golden opportunity to find out the background of Hermann's family one by one, while looking for ways to take over the company from the current owner of the company, James Hermann."It's the tenth time you've said the same thing
When their limousine car arrived in front of Hermann's residence, he stood staring at the building all over. This was far from what he imagined earlier. While on the way, he imagined what Hermann's building would look like, and now he was disappointed. He thought it would be much more grandiose than the residences of his two extended families in Italy, but it turned out to be much smaller than he thought. Only one thing caught his eye, a statue of a mermaid holding a large ball—who knew what it was—as a decoration of the fountain in front of Hermann's residence. His maternal grandfather only gave a classic touch to the fountain at the Aldebrando residence during the four years he spent there. There were no statues or anything because his grandfather did not like too festive and flashy things. His maternal grandfather's only hobby that he pursued after retiring from his posit
At first glance, he realized that Alfred was struggling to stop himself from laughing when he heard the sarcasm of his daughter's reply, while the old woman suddenly glared sharply at Marie who instead challenged her. "Insolent granddaughter!"This was the first time he had seen a soap opera in front of his eyes, and to be honest, he was not enjoying it at all. He was even amazed by Marie who could casually respond to everyone's insults there. Maybe because for that woman, all the insults he heard earlier were nothing new."Good afternoon," he said, taking the initiative to try to reconcile the chaotic atmosphere that had occurred
Thirty minutes later, they were no longer at Hermann's annoying residence. Now they were in a private room inside the Italian restaurant where Marie made a reservation with a luxurious dinner that he had not enjoyed for a long time, complete with three violinists whom his wife asked to accompany their dinner. The dining table was not big, just enough for two, complete with candles and a vase filled with fresh-looking roses. It did not take long for the two of them to wait for their order, because fifteen minutes later after they were seated in their seats, their orders arrived.“Only this place provides the best Italian food with a delightful view. See?" Marie gestured through the movement of her eyes to see the beautiful view of Rose city from the window of the room they were in. Reflexively, he followed Marie's eyes, who also looked at the view of Rose city while guessing Marie's thoughts. For what reason was that woman asking him to have dinner here?
Today's dinner was a mess.Marie stood in front of Keith Gilbert's bedroom which was half-opened, staring at her husband who was already asleep on his bed without having time to change his clothes. Maybe he was already too tired. Half of his body was on the floor. Trying not to make any sound that would wake him up, she approached her husband. Correcting his sleeping position while taking off the shoes that the man was wearing slowly, then put a blanket on him.Patricia was right. She really was a fool. She should not have filed for that damn contract marriage in the first place. She should have thought of some other way to approach him without stressing him out around her. She was too reckless, and now she regrets her decision. Only then did she see her husband's figure up close. Compared to when she first met him, the current Keith was much thinner. His face was so pale. When he scolded her at a dinner that should have been the perfect time to sta
"Keith! What are you doing here? I told you not to go into the kitchen, right?!"Marie shrieked as soon as she realized he was in the kitchen. Her face blushed violently, pushed him out of the kitchen, made him subconsciously grin at his wife's hard work. Then he paused, froze, and realized what he had just done.Strange. Even though until yesterday, Marie was still cold to him. Never say anything long. Always concise, full of threatening and arrogant tone. But now, in front of him, he instead found a clumsy woman who had just tried so hard to make a breakfast menu that she managed to destroy their kitchen. And to add it worse, he smiled at her for trying her best to make him breakfast. He cleared his throat, trying to cover up the fact that he had just been touched by Marie's effort this morning. "I just wanted to say thanks for the breakfast.""You can say after I finished washing the di
