Chapter 4

Author: Ethereal
"If Valentina needs the study, let her keep using it."

I carried the box to the bedroom, opened my suitcase, and began packing.

Dante followed. When he saw the half-filled suitcase, his face darkened and he seized my wrist. "Why are you packing? Where are you going?"

I pulled free. "Didn't you say I should have my own life and didn't need to report everything to you?"

Dante paused, apparently remembering his own words. After a moment, he softened his voice. "I was wrong not to tell you Valentina was moving into the estate. From now on, I'll discuss household arrangements with you first. The situation at the docks will take another two days. I've arranged your appointment with the family doctor for three days from now, and I'll go with you."

Even now, I ranked below family business and Valentina in his list of priorities.

I continued folding clothes. "There's no need. Whether you go or not makes no difference."

I was about to tell him there would be no more appointments when his phone rang.

Valentina's calm voice came through the receiver. "We found the man who leaked the convoy route. He's heading for the south docks with the port ledger. I'm taking a team after him."

Dante's expression changed at once. "Your injury hasn't healed."

"It's only a graze. I can handle the operation. Stay at the estate with Evelyn."

Valentina did not ask him to come, yet Dante was already reaching for the gun on the table. "Don't move until I get there."

He hung up and turned toward the door.

"Wait."

Dante stopped, impatience already between his brows. "Evelyn, that traitor almost killed Valentina and more than a dozen members of the family. Now he has the port ledger. I know you're unhappy about the study, but this isn't the time to discuss it. I'll go to your appointment the day after tomorrow and listen to everything you want to say. Right now, I need you to understand what matters most."

He had misunderstood. I had only meant to tell him there was no reason to arrange another appointment. But as I watched him hurry away, the truth suddenly seemed unnecessary. He had not had time to listen while our baby was alive. Now that the baby was gone, the truth no longer mattered.

After the door closed, I placed the last item of clothing in my suitcase. This time, I did not wait for him to return.

Dante scheduled the appointment anyway. Soon after he left, the family doctor called. "Your examination is at nine in the morning three days from now. Mr. Moretti said you canceled because you were angry with him. He will accompany you personally."

"I won't be there." The doctor tried to protest, but I ended the call.

In three days, I would arrive in Los Angeles and formally join Westbridge Risk Group.

Before leaving the estate, I placed three things on the bedroom table: my engagement ring, the dissolution agreement, and my miscarriage report.

Dante still had not returned by the time I boarded my flight to Los Angeles.

Two hours after I landed, my phone rang.

It was Dante.

The moment I answered, his panicked voice exploded through the receiver.

“Evelyn! Where is our baby?”

Six months later, Westbridge completed the restructuring of the three port routes. The board appointed me its youngest executive partner. At the signing ceremony, I put my name on the final agreement. As applause rose, I remembered the woman I used to be. Before accepting a job, entering a negotiation, or even choosing what to wear to dinner, I waited for Dante's answer. I had thought that was what it meant to share a life. Later, I learned that when one person constantly asks and the other answers with impatience, it is no longer intimacy. After the ceremony, my assistant told me someone was waiting downstairs.Dante sat in the reception room. After six months, he was thinner, and the insignia of the Moretti Don was gone from his clothes. Valentina was awaiting trial, Victor had accepted a plea agreement, and Santoro had lost most of its influence in Los Angeles. He placed a document on the table. It was the agreement ending our engagement."The lawyer said today was the deadline.""T

After the hearing, the Moretti council agreed to place three West Coast routes under Westbridge management for five years. For directing the investigation and rescue, I received a fifteen-percent stake in the port division.Adrian extended his hand. "Congratulations, partner."I had built an entire intelligence network for Dante without ever owning any part of it. Now, for the first time, the routes, the department, and the authority to decide were mine. From the far side of the conference room, Dante finally understood that leaving him had not cost me the Moretti family's protection. The Moretti family had lost me.Three days later, an encrypted ledger containing overseas warehouses, secret accounts, and informant names disappeared from the Moretti archives. Valentina was the last person seen entering the room.Dante did not tell me. He tried to recover both Valentina and the ledger before the council discovered the theft.Twelve hours later, a Westbridge convoy was ambushed. I recogn

Forty minutes later, I entered Westbridge's temporary command center.Moretti had not stopped unloading. Valentina had moved half the guards west to intercept an attack by road, but Victor had also stolen the plans for the underground drainage system."The attack won't come from the west. Santoro will enter through the underwater passage."Adrian immediately dispatched divers to the eastern outlet. Dante called at the same moment."Why are Westbridge personnel approaching a Moretti warehouse? I already told you that Valentina controls port operations.""Which is why I'm not commanding your people. The formal warning has been sent. You have fifteen minutes to evacuate.""Evelyn, do you have to prove she's wrong this way?"Even now, he believed this was a contest between two women."I don't need to prove she's wrong. In fifteen minutes, the result will do it for me."Nine minutes later, more than a dozen armed men entered the lower level through the drainage system. At the same time, a s

Dante walked straight toward me. In only a few days, he had grown thinner, and sleeplessness reddened his eyes."Why haven't you answered my calls?""There was no reason to.""You wanted me to attend Claire's wedding with you, so I came."When I had invited him, he had not even looked up. He told me to attend on my own because not everything required his presence."That was before."He reached toward my hair, but I stepped back."Evelyn, do we have to become strangers?""Today is Claire's wedding. I don't want to discuss us here.""I'll wait for you after the ceremony."I did not answer.Claire was upstairs getting ready. The moment she saw me, she crossed the room in her wedding gown and embraced me. "I heard what happened in Chicago. If you don't want to go back, don't. You will always have a place here."She did not ask about the baby or offer hollow comfort. She only held my hand tightly. The ceremony took place in a glass chapel overlooking the sea. During the vows, Lucas looked a

It was already dark when I left Westbridge. I was still searching my memory for Adrian when Dante called again."Where are you staying? I've already sent a plane to Los Angeles. Give Marco the address.""I'm not coming back."Glass shattered on the other end of the line."You just miscarried. You haven't recovered, yet you ran to another city for work. You ordered the guards to suppress the news and told the hospital to hide your records. Evelyn, I was the baby's father. What gave you the right to make me the last person to know?""You weren't the last person to know. You were the one person who should have known, but chose not to stay and listen.""I was dealing with an ambush. More than a dozen members of the family nearly died, and Valentina took a bullet for me. You only said you were bleeding. You didn't tell me our baby could die. If I'd known it was that serious, of course I would have come back."If. Again."Dante, I didn't know the baby would die either. I was frightened, and

His breathing was ragged, and something shattered in the background.“Tell me that report isn’t real. Tell me our baby is still alive!”“No, Dante. The report is real. Our baby is gone.”The other end of the line fell silent. The airport announcement repeated the baggage claim information. A long time passed before Dante spoke, his voice hoarse.“Six days ago?”“Yes.”“Why didn’t you tell me?”I watched the suitcases moving along the carousel. “I did tell you. That night, I said I was bleeding.”Dante clearly remembered the call. His breath caught, and when his voice returned, restrained fury lay beneath every word.“You didn’t tell me it was that serious. I sent the driver to take you to the hospital. Evelyn, why didn’t you call me again?”Even now, his first thought was that I had failed to explain clearly enough. As though one more call, one more tear, or a more desperate plea would have changed his choice. But I had told him I was bleeding. It was the last cry for help I had been a
