Chapter 3

Author: Dottie
I ended up being rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

I was already four months pregnant, too far along for the abortion pills to work. After that intense confrontation with Philip, I started bleeding heavily.

The moment the paramedics wheeled me into the ER, I passed right by Philip, who was rushing in with Vivian in his arms.

His sleeves were rolled up, exposing the countless scars covering his arms.

For a moment, I couldn't help thinking about the past.

When my postpartum depression was at its worst, Philip had inflicted far more wounds on himself than I ever did, just to force me to stop hurting myself. Back then, his love had been even crazier than mine.

Later, he cheated on me seven times. I hurt myself, fell apart, and tried every way I could think of to make him stay. But every time, he'd find an even more extreme way to hurt himself just to make me back down.

We were both equally extreme, always willing to hurt ourselves just to force the other to give in.

We were two sides of the same coin. So why did this time feel different?

Before I could figure it out, Philip was already rushing toward the doctor, Andrew Russell. "Doctor! Help her! Her stomach hurts! Please check her now!"

Dr. Russell pushed him aside impatiently. "Move! She's just having some pregnancy cramps. Stop getting in the way! Can't you see Ms. Stewart is in critical condition?"

Philip followed the doctor's line of sight. The moment he saw me, he froze.

Then he suddenly grabbed my wrist, his eyes burning with fury.

"Janet, is this your newest trick to force my hand?" he snarled. "First, you leaked those photos of Vivian and drove her into this state. I had no choice but to bring her to the nearest hospital. And it happens to be one you own. Now you're pretending to be sick just to delay her treatment?"

He gritted his teeth and sneered, "You planned everything perfectly. Impressive."

I'd already lost too much blood, and when he yanked me like that, my vision kept fading in and out.

Dr. Russell panicked. "Ms. Stewart isn't pretending! She's bleeding heavily because she's—"

Philip suddenly dropped to his knees, cutting him off. "Is this enough? Can you treat Vivian now?"

I stared at him in shock.

The man kneeling before me felt like a total stranger. The Philip I knew would never lower himself like that for anyone.

When I remained silent, he paused for a moment before suddenly slamming his forehead against the floor.

The dull thud echoed through the hall. When he lifted his head, blood was trickling from his forehead.

"What about now?" he asked.

Staring into his eyes, which were brimming with hatred and disgust, I suddenly realized that he was testing me.

He was betting on my feelings for him, putting himself on the line just like always. He was playing the same destructive game we'd played countless times before. Except this time, it wasn't for us. It was for someone else.

My chest felt so tight that I could barely breathe. I couldn't tell whether it was from the blood loss or heartbreak.

"Fine, fine, fine…" His voice trembled.

Without warning, he pulled a folding knife from his pocket and plunged it into his chest.

Blood quickly spread across his shirt. He let out a muffled groan, his voice desperate. "Janet, I give up. You can do whatever you want to me. You can even take my life…"

It felt as though all the blood had drained from my body. I closed my eyes and said, "Philip, what if I'm not pretending? What if I'm actually dying?"

He stared at me for a moment, then answered, "I'd die with you."

I knew he meant it, and that made me feel even more helpless.

I forced a weak smile and said to Dr. Russell, "Save her first."

I was the sole owner of the hospital. If Philip hadn't been desperate, he would never have risked bringing Vivian here.

He froze for a moment, then finally breathed a sigh of relief. Tears slipped down his face as he rose to his feet. He looked at me and said hoarsely, "Thank you."

The words felt like they belonged to a stranger, and that was exactly what he was in my eyes now.

As my consciousness began to fade, I caught a glimpse of Vivian peeking out from over his shoulder, her lips curling into a faint smile.

It was the smug, confident smile of a winner.

It was true that Philip hadn't kidnapped Shawn, but he'd had his people knock Shawn unconscious. It took me a moment to realize that he was just testing me, playing another sick game to see who I would choose. The moment Shawn woke up, he rushed straight over to me. His face was slick with sweat as he grabbed my wrist and pulled me to my feet. "Come on, let's go home."I nodded, not wanting to stay in that place for another second.Philip stood at the other end of the hallway, watching Shawn lead me away by the hand. He leaned against the wall, looking oddly lonely. As I passed him, he suddenly spoke. "Leave with him, and I'll end my life."My steps faltered."Or you could stay," he added. "We can go back to how things used to be."I turned to look at him, suddenly finding the whole situation so ridiculous that I almost laughed."Are you out of your mind, Philip? I already made my choice. You were the one who cheated. You were the one who betrayed me. What the hell are you try

Philip still went after Shawn. When the kidnapper called, I couldn't think straight. He gave me an address, told me to come alone, and hung up.I recognized the address. It was where Philip had been staying the past few days.I grabbed a gun and went straight there. The moment I pushed the door open, I fired twice. The bullets whizzed past Philip's ear and hit the wall behind him, sending plaster flying."Where is he?" I gritted my teeth. "Where's Shawn?"His bodyguards instantly rushed forward, forming a half-circle around me.Philip raised a hand, and they all backed off. He just stared at me without saying a word.Losing my patience, I lunged forward, grabbed him by the collar, and jammed the gun under his chin. "Where the hell is he?""Janet." He gave me a faint smile, his voice calm. "What if I told you it wasn't me?""Stop lying, Philip! I know you!" My hand shook, the gun trembling against his skin. "If you have a problem, come after me! Shawn and I are getting married

I never thought I'd see Philip again.By my third year in Feldora, I had a new boyfriend, Shawn Leed. Life was quiet and peaceful. Those ten years Philip and I spent tearing each other apart felt like a distant memory.I was buying water at a convenience store when I overheard that piranhas had been spotted in a nearby diving area. My hand shook so badly that I dropped the bottle, sending it rolling across the floor."No idea how they got into that area. It's usually perfectly safe," a man said."I heard one guy got hurt. Someone pushed him toward the piranhas while trying to get away. Poor guy got bitten up pretty badly."Panicking, I pushed through the crowd and ran toward the bay as fast as I could.A group of people had gathered along the beach. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. Then I saw Philip gripping Shawn's arm.I was stunned. My eyes fell on the horrific wound on Shawn's leg, and my mind went blank.I rushed over and slapped Philip hard acr

Philip never expected to spend a whole year abroad looking for me.For the first three months, he was furious.Every time his people called to say they still had no leads, he completely lost it, smashing nearly everything in his hotel room."Keep looking." He clenched a lit cigarette between his lips, his voice low and frightening. "She thinks she can just divorce me and walk away? Is she kidding me? Did she even ask if I agreed?"He refused to accept that I had really left, let alone that I could actually stop loving him.Over the years, I'd been intensely jealous, obsessively possessive, and almost completely dependent on him. He knew better than anyone that I couldn't live without him.By the third month, his rage faded, replaced by a deep, agonizing panic. His room was littered with empty cigarette packs. Whenever the panic became too much, he'd pick at the old scars on his arms until they were bleeding. Then one day, he suddenly realized how alike we were. Even when we pan

There were three documents. One was the paperwork for my abortion procedure, another was Vivian's fetal monitoring results, and the third was the divorce agreement. When Philip saw the first two, he just scoffed. This wasn't the first time I'd faked a pregnancy. After losing our first child years ago, my body had been badly damaged, and doctors had told me I'd likely never be able to have children again. Philip had long since given up hope of us having another child.Thinking this was just another one of my cheap mind games, Philip pulled out Vivian's report and threw it straight into the trash. Then he reached the divorce agreement, and his breath caught. He flipped through a few pages with a frown, his breathing growing heavier. He was irritated by what he assumed was yet another one of my reckless stunts. Beneath that irritation, though, an unfamiliar anger began to rise.No matter how ugly our fights had gotten over the years, I'd never once mentioned divorce. He'd never ev

  • Our Destructive Game Ends With Her   Chapter 4

During the week I was in the hospital, Philip stayed in the room next door, taking care of Vivian. One afternoon, I was lost in thought as muffled, intimate sounds drifted through the wall. Suddenly, Dr. Russell knocked on my door and walked in."Ms. Stewart, the test results are back. The baby Ms. Taylor is carrying isn't Mr. Mumford's."Instead of taking the report, I looked out the window without a flicker of emotion.Whatever happened with Philip was no longer my concern. On my way out of the hospital, I passed Vivian's room and saw Philip gently coaxing her to finish a bowl of soup.Honestly, this awkward yet sincere side of Philip was one I'd never seen before.I raised my hand to knock, then hesitated. In the end, I asked Dr. Russell to give him the divorce agreement. Then I headed straight to the airport and left the city without looking back.… Philip had been on edge throughout the week Vivian was in the hospital. He knew me too well. He knew how obsessive and pos
