Chapter 2 The Game Ends Here

Penulis: Bright Lights
"Natalie got Ewan a Maserati this year, right? What are you planning to give your boyfriend, Natalie? A miniature model car?"

"A model car costs money, too. Aren't you two supposed to be saving, Natalie? Why not give him this instead?" Ewan said. He pulled out a restaurant napkin, took out a pen, and doodled a car on it. "Just tell him you drew it yourself. It's the thought that counts. I'm sure he'll love it!"

So… Natalie hadn't given up studying abroad for me.

She simply hadn't wanted to go abroad in the first place.

All those years of her living in that shabby rental with me and enduring all those hardships? Well, that had only been a game to her.

She was just a spoiled little rich girl trying to experience life as a commoner.

And to top it all off, I had been nothing more than Ewan's substitute. Even the gifts I had treasured were nothing but embarrassingly cheap knockoffs of the gifts she gave him.

I couldn't stand hearing any more of this. So, I fled the restaurant in a panic, feeling waves of pain choking the breath out of me.

I handed in my resignation to the shift manager before dragging my numb body home one step at a time.

As I stood outside the cheap rental building, my eyes were hollow as they swept across rows of food trucks lined up the street. Then, I walked over to the burrito truck I often visited and ordered one.

"You're getting off work pretty early today," the owner greeted me. "The usual—no beans, no meat, extra of the free toppings, right?"

I shook my head. "No. I'll have the carnitas today. And I'll add…"

I'd once been so determined to save money that I couldn't even bring myself to spend two dollars on meat. Yet, all the money I'd worked so hard to save had been nothing more than pocket change for Natalie to blow on a whim.

So, what was the point of depriving myself anymore?

I might as well start taking better care of myself.

I added everything I'd always been too reluctant to order. I took bite after bite, but tears slipped from the corners of my eyes. I raised a hand to wipe them away, only to find that the tears wouldn't stop coming no matter how many times I brushed my palms across my face.

For the rich, my struggles had been nothing more than a game. For someone like me, who had spent his entire life struggling just to get by, these past few years had been pill after pill of bitterness.

'Natalie, I'm done being a pawn in your game.'

I pulled up my supervisor's WhatsApp and accepted the company's out-of-town assignment.

From now on, I would live only for myself.

My supervisor was delighted. "Sylvan, you've always been hardworking and responsible. I'm confident you'll be able to handle this assignment!"

I thanked him. Then, I opened my laptop and started going through the materials again.

I would do my best to live my own life. I wasn't a substitute or a toy. I was a human being.

…

It wasn't until 3 a.m. that Natalie finally pushed open the door and came home.

She had already changed out of the glamorous evening gown she'd been wearing earlier.

Now, she was wearing the cheap T-shirt I'd bought her, as though everything I'd seen earlier had been nothing more than an illusion.

She came over and began massaging my shoulders. "You're still working this late? You work so hard, babe. Look, I brought you a present. I drew this especially for you while I was working my part-time job.

"I'll buy you a luxury car once we make it big someday. Lots and lots of luxury cars. I'll even build you a huge garage to keep them all…"

She held out the doodle car Ewan had drawn and placed it in front of me.

The napkin was soft, but the ridiculous drawing on it looked almost laughable. That wasn't a future car. Instead, it was an empty check.

I casually tossed it aside.

Natalie didn't notice. She didn't give my reaction a second thought. Instead, she opened the large bag of groceries she'd bought and showed me what was inside.

"I got so lucky today. One of the discounted baked goods was your favorite cinnamon roll. I didn't even allow myself to eat it. I saved it especially for you."

As she spoke, she tore open the package herself and brought the cinnamon roll to my lips.

However, I instinctively leaned back in revulsion, avoiding her attempt to feed me.

I'd already heard enough to piece together the truth.

All those discounted products that were close to expiring weren't things she had happened to find by chance. She had specifically hired people to buy them.

"What?" I blurted, wondering whether I'd misheard her. "Ms. Calloway, you can't be serious. What exactly do you see in me?"Violet smiled. "You're capable, handsome, and you have quite the figure, which means superior genes. I find myself in need of an excellent husband with such qualities. Is that reason enough? "We're both adults here, so I don't think you'd buy it if I told you I'd hopelessly fallen in love with you. You'd probably think I was lying to you. So, I won't say that. I'll only tell you that I respect you as a person, and I want to build a good life with you. "This marriage will give you access to resources, shares, properties, and money. I think you know by now that I'm not one for empty promises. I always make good on my word. You can take your time and think it over. "As for feelings… Well, that would come in time, wouldn't you agree?"I thought about Violet's words for a long time, remembering the seven years I had spent with Natalie. I had been treated like a

I ran into Natalie.I rubbed my eyes, thinking I must be seeing things.Natalie was dressed plainly, her hair damp with sweat and sticking to her face. She looked utterly disheveled."Sylvan, I've finally found you!" She rushed over and threw her arms around me.It was only then that I came fully to my senses. This wasn't a hallucination. This was really happening.I immediately shoved her away. She froze where she stood, her eyes red and swollen. "I'm sorry for coming so late. I know now that you were there when I celebrated Ewan's birthday, but I need you to know that none of what you heard was true."Ewan and I did date in the past, and I did consider you as his replacement when I first got together with you. But I swear that I fell deeply in love with you later on. Couldn't you feel how much I loved you?"I almost started laughing at her audacity. "I'm sorry, but I really couldn't."Natalie's tears nearly spilled over in her desperation. "I know you're still mad at me, but

"You knew perfectly well that Sylvan was my boyfriend. Yet, you instructed the manager to hire him. "You specifically arranged the best seat for him to watch everything unfold before prodding your friends to say those things because you knew that I wouldn't humiliate you in front of everyone."You knew damn well that I'd initially mistaken him as you when I got together with Sylvan. But you were also fully aware that I later realized that he was a hundred, a thousand times better than a piece of trash like you! "So, you staged that whole scene, tricked me into hitting Sylvan, and caused us to fight. You're behind it all!"Natalie raised her hand and slapped Ewan again and again. She slapped him a full ten times across the face before she finally felt satisfied.Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. He didn't try to dodge. Instead, he raised a hand, wiped away the blood, and smiled crookedly. "You don't actually think I wanted to be with you because I loved you, do you?"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Joffre isn't in the office.""Where did he go then?""He was sent out of town on assignment. Didn't he tell you?""Which city?""I'm sorry, but that's private information, so I can't disclose that. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Joffre directly."Natalie felt her muscles lock up as the call ended.Suddenly, she remembered that night when she had overheard me talking about booking a plane ticket. She had assumed I was booking it for my boss. She never imagined that I'd bought the ticket for myself.'No wonder Sylvan had been acting strangely ever since that night. He'd been preparing to leave ever since that day.'Natalie sank onto the cheap sofa and began going over everything that had happened over the past few days, turning every detail over and over in her mind.'The day Sylvan looked so utterly lost was also Ewan's birthday!'She snapped back to reality and quickly emailed a contact. "Look into something for me. Look into Sylvan's whereabout

Natalie immediately called me, determined to get an explanation out of me. Unfortunately, a mechanical female voice came through the moment the call connected. "The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later…"She gritted her teeth. 'How dare he refuse to answer my calls!'Still, she wasn't about to give up so easily. So, she called again.Ewan stood nearby, watching the entire scene with a satisfied smile. He walked over to her. "What's wrong, Natalie?"He leaned in to look at her phone. At that exact moment, Natalie switched back to her chat screen, and the messages showing we had broken up appeared right in front of him. Ewan was so delighted that he could barely stop the bubble of laughter from escaping his lips. Still, he quickly composed himself and put on a concerned expression. "It looks like he's throwing a tantrum. Why don't you go home and make it up to him?"Natalie took a deep breath and stopped trying to call me. "I'll deal with h

A company representative was already waiting to pick me up as soon as I landed in Ashbury."Hello, Mr. Joffre. I'm Alistair Lockwood from Human Resources. You can just call me Al.""Thank you."Alistair smiled and took my luggage. "The company has already arranged your accommodations. We're waiting for one more person. Once she arrives, I'll take both of you to get settled in, and then I'll take you to the welcome dinner."Alistair was extremely friendly, and I stood beside him as we waited.Alistair glanced at his watch every so often. Eventually, he leaned closer and asked lowly, "Do you know who we're waiting for?"I looked down at my phone and scrolled through some work materials. I had blocked every one of Natalie's socials. So, I didn't mind the long silence. Honestly, I was enjoying the peace my actions had afforded me."Who?" I asked obligingly.Alistair could barely contain his excitement. "It's the CEO's daughter, Violet Calloway. She just returned from studying abroa
