Chapter 4 Face-To-Face With Ewan

Penulis: Bright Lights
The apartment walls were so thin that I could hear Natalie's hearty laughter from the other room every so often.

I had completely lost any desire to dig deeper into what was going on, so I returned to my room and focused on dealing with my work.

My supervisor called to ask about the details, and I answered each question in detail. "Yes, understood. The plane ticket's been booked."

It wasn't until I hung up that I noticed Natalie standing in the doorway. She anxiously pressed me for an explanation, asking, "Why did you buy a plane ticket? Where are you going?"

I quirked a brow at her and walked out of the room, casually making up an excuse. "I bought it for my supervisor."

Only then did Natalie sigh in relief. "I misunderstood you. I thought you were leaving. Of course… I was just being silly. We've been together for seven years, and our relationship has always been so good. How could you possibly leave me here alone?"

Natalie slipped her arm through mine, her smile sweet and radiant. For a moment there, that smile on her face brought me back to the memories we had created together back when we were in college.

There had been a time when simply thinking about the happy memories of us walking beneath the dogwood trees on campus had been enough to make me forget all my pain.

However, that was no longer the case.

Now, I only felt sick to my guts whenever I thought about how my relationship with Natalie had been a lie from the very beginning, about how I had only ever been a substitute for Ewan.

Were those moments when she had seemed genuinely moved because of me, or because seeing this familiar face had made her think of someone else? The answer was obvious in hindsight.

It had never been because of me.

Natalie tugged and coaxed me back toward the bedroom, but I no longer wanted to be anyone's substitute. So, I coldly refused. "I still have work to finish."

Her coquettish smile immediately slipped from her face. "Sylvan, you know what I'm implying, and you still want to work?"

I didn't even spare her a glance as I sat down at the dining table and opened my laptop. "Of course. Work comes first. Isn't that what you've always been preaching?

"You've been telling me over and over that we had to work hard, make money, and get away from here someday. Remember?"

Natalie was left speechless by my blunt retort. In the end, she could only stomp her foot before storming back to the bedroom to sleep.

…

Natalie left for work early the next morning.

Perhaps it was because my supervisor was aware of my upcoming assignment away from town, so he had given me some time off to pack. The company had also advanced me part of my relocation allowance so that I could make proper arrangements.

I went to the mall intending to buy myself a few decent outfits, but I happened to bump into Natalie purchasing a watch for Ewan when I passed a luxury boutique.

Natalie walked out of the store right after paying and ran straight into me. She strode over and lowered her voice. "You didn't go to work today? What are you doing here?"

"I came out to take care of something for my supervisor."

Natalie smiled. "Same here. That guy is one of our company's major clients, so I came to entertain him on my supervisor's behalf."

A major client? More like fiancé.

"Is that so?" I glanced at the shopping bag in her hand. "Did you use the money I saved?"

Natalie froze before awkwardly changing the subject. "Of course not. You barely earn anything… I mean, the gift was charged to the company."

She and I had always belonged to two completely different worlds. In her eyes, the money I had painstakingly saved wasn't even enough to buy this watch.

How ridiculous.

Ewan exchanged a glance with the people around him, and someone immediately stepped forward with a mocking laugh. "Natalie, is this your boyfriend? Why is he dressed like some country bumpkin?"

"Don't say that. What do you mean 'looks like'? He is one."

"Natalie, since we're already at the mall, why don't you buy your boyfriend a couple of clothes that actually fit him? He looks so shabby. Are you really going to bring someone like this out in public?"

Natalie didn't say a single word in my defense. She merely shook her head and said, "The important thing is that he has clothes to wear. Why does he need to look good? Let's focus on work."

She tried to pull them away, but he stepped forward and stopped in front of me. It was actually the first time I had ever come face-to-face with him.

"What?" I blurted, wondering whether I'd misheard her. "Ms. Calloway, you can't be serious. What exactly do you see in me?"Violet smiled. "You're capable, handsome, and you have quite the figure, which means superior genes. I find myself in need of an excellent husband with such qualities. Is that reason enough? "We're both adults here, so I don't think you'd buy it if I told you I'd hopelessly fallen in love with you. You'd probably think I was lying to you. So, I won't say that. I'll only tell you that I respect you as a person, and I want to build a good life with you. "This marriage will give you access to resources, shares, properties, and money. I think you know by now that I'm not one for empty promises. I always make good on my word. You can take your time and think it over. "As for feelings… Well, that would come in time, wouldn't you agree?"I thought about Violet's words for a long time, remembering the seven years I had spent with Natalie. I had been treated like a

I ran into Natalie.I rubbed my eyes, thinking I must be seeing things.Natalie was dressed plainly, her hair damp with sweat and sticking to her face. She looked utterly disheveled."Sylvan, I've finally found you!" She rushed over and threw her arms around me.It was only then that I came fully to my senses. This wasn't a hallucination. This was really happening.I immediately shoved her away. She froze where she stood, her eyes red and swollen. "I'm sorry for coming so late. I know now that you were there when I celebrated Ewan's birthday, but I need you to know that none of what you heard was true."Ewan and I did date in the past, and I did consider you as his replacement when I first got together with you. But I swear that I fell deeply in love with you later on. Couldn't you feel how much I loved you?"I almost started laughing at her audacity. "I'm sorry, but I really couldn't."Natalie's tears nearly spilled over in her desperation. "I know you're still mad at me, but

"You knew perfectly well that Sylvan was my boyfriend. Yet, you instructed the manager to hire him. "You specifically arranged the best seat for him to watch everything unfold before prodding your friends to say those things because you knew that I wouldn't humiliate you in front of everyone."You knew damn well that I'd initially mistaken him as you when I got together with Sylvan. But you were also fully aware that I later realized that he was a hundred, a thousand times better than a piece of trash like you! "So, you staged that whole scene, tricked me into hitting Sylvan, and caused us to fight. You're behind it all!"Natalie raised her hand and slapped Ewan again and again. She slapped him a full ten times across the face before she finally felt satisfied.Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. He didn't try to dodge. Instead, he raised a hand, wiped away the blood, and smiled crookedly. "You don't actually think I wanted to be with you because I loved you, do you?"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Joffre isn't in the office.""Where did he go then?""He was sent out of town on assignment. Didn't he tell you?""Which city?""I'm sorry, but that's private information, so I can't disclose that. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Joffre directly."Natalie felt her muscles lock up as the call ended.Suddenly, she remembered that night when she had overheard me talking about booking a plane ticket. She had assumed I was booking it for my boss. She never imagined that I'd bought the ticket for myself.'No wonder Sylvan had been acting strangely ever since that night. He'd been preparing to leave ever since that day.'Natalie sank onto the cheap sofa and began going over everything that had happened over the past few days, turning every detail over and over in her mind.'The day Sylvan looked so utterly lost was also Ewan's birthday!'She snapped back to reality and quickly emailed a contact. "Look into something for me. Look into Sylvan's whereabout

Natalie immediately called me, determined to get an explanation out of me. Unfortunately, a mechanical female voice came through the moment the call connected. "The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later…"She gritted her teeth. 'How dare he refuse to answer my calls!'Still, she wasn't about to give up so easily. So, she called again.Ewan stood nearby, watching the entire scene with a satisfied smile. He walked over to her. "What's wrong, Natalie?"He leaned in to look at her phone. At that exact moment, Natalie switched back to her chat screen, and the messages showing we had broken up appeared right in front of him. Ewan was so delighted that he could barely stop the bubble of laughter from escaping his lips. Still, he quickly composed himself and put on a concerned expression. "It looks like he's throwing a tantrum. Why don't you go home and make it up to him?"Natalie took a deep breath and stopped trying to call me. "I'll deal with h

A company representative was already waiting to pick me up as soon as I landed in Ashbury."Hello, Mr. Joffre. I'm Alistair Lockwood from Human Resources. You can just call me Al.""Thank you."Alistair smiled and took my luggage. "The company has already arranged your accommodations. We're waiting for one more person. Once she arrives, I'll take both of you to get settled in, and then I'll take you to the welcome dinner."Alistair was extremely friendly, and I stood beside him as we waited.Alistair glanced at his watch every so often. Eventually, he leaned closer and asked lowly, "Do you know who we're waiting for?"I looked down at my phone and scrolled through some work materials. I had blocked every one of Natalie's socials. So, I didn't mind the long silence. Honestly, I was enjoying the peace my actions had afforded me."Who?" I asked obligingly.Alistair could barely contain his excitement. "It's the CEO's daughter, Violet Calloway. She just returned from studying abroa
