Chapter 2 Too Late

Author: Lora South
Harrison hadn't finished speaking when a panicked scream suddenly came from the other end of the line. "Ah! I twisted my ankle, Harrison! It hurts so bad!"

Then came Harrison's anxious voice. "Penelope! How could you be so careless? Don't move. I'm coming right over!"

He quickly said to me, "Katherine, call yourself an ambulance. Penelope's hurt. I need to get her to the hospital first!"

He hung up without another word. The line went dead.

I lay on the cold floor, the pain in my abdomen growing more and more intense.

I quickly called 911.

I didn't know how I managed until the ambulance arrived. The moment they lifted me onto the stretcher, everything went dark, and I lost consciousness.

When I woke up, I was already in a hospital room. The harsh white lights made my eyes ache, and the sharp smell of disinfectant filled the air.

My lower abdomen was flat, and the little life that had once given me a glimmer of hope was gone.

A nurse walked in and spoke softly. "You're awake, Mrs. Westbrook. You were brought in too late. I'm sorry, but we couldn't save the baby. Please accept my condolences."

I spent three days in the hospital, and Harrison never came once.

Adrian, on the other hand, came the moment he heard I'd woken up.

He stood beside my bed, looking at my pale face. The concern and anger in his eyes were impossible to hide. "I'm sorry, Katherine. I should've come sooner."

I shook my head, my voice hoarse. "It's not your fault, Adrian."

He peeled an apple for me. After sitting in silence for a long while, he finally spoke. "I found out what happened. That night, Harrison took Penelope to another private hospital. It was only a sprained ankle, and she didn't even need to be admitted."

I listened without any expression.

"Where is he now?" I asked.

"He's been with Penelope these past few days. I heard he even took her to the beach to cheer her up."

To cheer her up?

My baby was gone, and he had taken the woman responsible for my baby's death to the beach to cheer her up.

What a cruel irony.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. When I opened them again, they were cold and resolute. "Listen up, Adrian."

I looked at him and said, word by word, "The plan we had before isn't enough. I want him to lose everything. I want him disgraced."

Adrian saw the resolve in my eyes and nodded firmly.

"Done." He didn't hesitate.

The day I was discharged, Harrison finally showed up.

Adrian stopped in front of a clean gravestone. There was no photograph on it, only a single line of words. "Here Lies Katherine's Beloved Son.""What is this?" I asked, puzzled."I had this gravestone made for your child—the one who never got to see the world." Adrian's voice was soft. "I thought he should have a place where he could rest in peace."My tears burst free. For more than a year, I'd forced myself to forget. I'd forced myself not to think about that child. I thought that as long as I never mentioned him, the wound wouldn't hurt. But Adrian had remembered him for me.He remembered my hurt, remembered my pain, and in his own way, gently helped soothe them.I buried my face in his arms and finally let out all the grief I'd been carrying for more than a year.He simply held me in silence, gently patting my back as though comforting a child who'd been falsely accused. On the drive home that day, the setting sun painted the sky a warm orange.Soft music played in the c

  • Our Marriage Ends Here   Chapter 8 What They Lost

What should have been Harrison's crowning moment ended in a scandal of epic proportions and a complete farce.Marcus suffered a stroke right there and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.Harrison, the once high and mighty fake heir, was thrown out of the Westbrook mansion on the spot by the furious Westbrooks, like a stray dog with nowhere to go.The divorce process went remarkably smoothly. The Westbrooks, feeling guilty over what had happened, gave me a substantial settlement, along with all the property I was entitled to from the marriage.Meanwhile, Harrison was cast out with nothing. The luxury cars, the mansion, the bank accounts—everything he had once possessed vanished overnight. He seemed unable to accept reality and became completely unhinged. He started calling and texting me incessantly. At first, it was nothing but curses. Then came the desperate pleas."It's all my fault, Katherine. I'm responsible for everything that happened. Please forgive me."

  • Our Marriage Ends Here   Chapter 7 The Heir Exposed

The moment Penelope's mother saw the head nurse, she let out a scream and crumpled to the floor. It was all too obvious now. With everyone watching, the head nurse shuffled onto the stage, trembling, as she told them everything that had happened all those years ago.She told them about the true heir who had died as an infant, and the vile plot to replace him with another child. When Marcus heard this, he could no longer hold himself up. He gasped for breath, then collapsed backward. The banquet hall erupted into chaos.I watched the spectacle unfolding before me with cold detachment, watching Harrison fall from heaven into hell. The expression on his face shifted from shock, to fear, and finally to utter despair."No, this isn't real… I'm a Westbrook! I'm the one who belongs here!" he muttered to himself, looking almost deranged.I walked over to him and bent down, whispering into his ear so softly that only the two of us could hear."Harrison, remember that stormy night? My

The real show was just beginning.Halfway through the annual gala, Marcus, my so-called father-in-law, stepped onto the main stage. He delivered an impassioned speech before turning to the crowd with a smile."Tonight isn't just the Westbrook Group's annual gala. I have one more important announcement to make."He paused and looked toward Harrison, his eyes filled with a father's pride and affection."Starting next month, my son, Harrison, will officially take over as CEO of Westbrook Group and take full control of its operations!"Thunderous applause erupted from the crowd.Harrison straightened his suit, wearing a polished smile as he prepared to take the stage. He had finally gotten what he'd been waiting for. He'd spent so long planning and scheming, all for this moment. He stopped beside me and lowered his voice. "Watch closely, Katherine. Over the course of that month, I became a completely different person.I stopped crying and stopped shutting everyone out. Instead, I began dressing myself carefully and reappearing at social events.I smiled at Harrison. I was warm and attentive, as though the pain of losing our baby had finally passed, and as though we'd gone back to being polite strangers to each other.Harrison was very pleased with the change in my attitude. In his eyes, his wife had finally come to her senses. With his guard down, he poured even more of his energy into the future he was planning with Penelope. He even started bringing Penelope to semi-public business events, quietly signaling something to the outside world.Meanwhile, Penelope grew bolder by the day.She wore my clothes, used my perfume, and whenever Harrison wasn't around, she sat in my seat, staring at me provocatively."Look, Katherine. • Our Marriage Ends Here   Chapter 4 The Truth About Harrison

My voice was shaking."I was only suspicious at first," Adrian said in a low voice. "That changed when my team found someone who knew what happened back then—the head nurse who delivered Victoria's baby. She retired a few years ago and now lives in the country.""What did she say?""She said Victoria did give birth to a boy, but he was born with serious health problems and died within a few days. That same day, another baby boy had been abandoned at the hospital."A former vice president of the hospital and Penelope's mother worked together to make it happen. They switched the babies and passed the abandoned child off as the Westbrook family's son and heir."I was too stunned to speak. So Harrison wasn't just a fraud. He was a complete impostor. His status, his wealth, his reputation—everything he had wasn't actually his."What happened to the vice president?""He was arrested for taking bribes a few years ago. He later died of an illness in prison.""And Penelope's mother…"
