Ethan’s heart pounded so loudly in his ears that he almost didn’t hear Nathan’s question.

“I have to tell you something,” he repeated, voice quieter now, like it might vanish if he didn’t say it soon enough.

Nathan’s gaze sharpened. “What is it?”

Ethan sat up slowly, pulling the blanket over his legs, suddenly aware of how exposed he felt in this moment emotionally more than physically. “I don’t know where to start.”

Nathan shifted too, leaning back against the headboard. He was fully alert now, his brow slightly furrowed, waiting.

Ethan swallowed hard. “It’s about Lilly.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t speak.

“She… she told me something a few weeks ago. Something weird. I brushed it off at the time because I thought she was joking or maybe just being dramatic.” Ethan rubbed the back of his neck, trying to gather his thoughts. “But now, after everything last night, I can’t ignore it.”

Nathan looked at him, his tone even. “What did she say?”

Ethan hesitated. “She said… she wasn’t really interested in me.”

Nathan blinked. “Then why was she ?”

“She said she liked power,” Ethan interrupted. “Control. She said… and I quote… ‘The best way to control a man is to make him think he’s the one in charge.’” He gave a dry laugh. “Back then, I thought it was just a weird flirtation line.”

Nathan sat still, his body rigid.

Ethan continued, “But now I think she was never really into me at all. She was playing a game, and it had nothing to do with me.”

Nathan’s throat was dry. “So she told you all this and you still invited her tonight?”

“I didn’t plan to,” Ethan said quickly. “But Mom pushed me to bring her, and I thought it would be harmless. I thought maybe… maybe I’d been overthinking it.”

Nathan leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “She flirted with me all night, Ethan. Openly. It wasn’t subtle.”

“I know.” Ethan looked down. “I saw it. That’s why I followed you to the bathroom. I didn’t say anything because… I wasn’t even sure what to feel.”

Nathan stared at him for a long moment. Then he reached out, placing a hand gently on Ethan’s shoulder. “So what are you feeling now?”

Ethan let out a long breath. “Angry. Confused. Embarrassed.” He looked up. “And… protective. Not just of me but of you, too. She’s not just manipulative. She’s dangerous in a subtle way. The kind of girl who wants to set things on fire and then pretend to be shocked when they burn.”

Nathan gave a slow nod. “Then I’m glad you see it now.”

They sat in silence for a moment.

“I just hate that she came into our space, our family, and treated it like some stage to act on,” Ethan muttered.

Nathan reached over, giving his shoulder a squeeze. “You didn’t do anything wrong. People like that are good at wearing masks.”

Ethan looked at him. “So… what do we do now?”

Nathan’s eyes darkened. “We cut her off. Entirely. No contact. She won’t be around this family again.”

Ethan nodded. “Agreed.”

But just as the weight between them seemed to settle, a new question floated to the surface, one neither of them had dared voice.

“What are we?” Ethan finally asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “You and me?”

Nathan stiffened, his hand falling away from Ethan’s shoulder.

“You mean…”

Ethan turned toward him fully. “I don’t know what last night was. Or the way we’ve been around each other. It’s been building for months, hasn’t it? That… closeness.”

Nathan looked away. “We shouldn’t be talking about this.”

“But we are.” Ethan’s voice was firmer now. “And we have to.”

Nathan stood up, pacing the room. “You’re right, okay? I’ve been avoiding it. Because I didn’t want to admit that something’s been happening between us. But it’s complicated. It’s not… appropriate.”

Ethan got to his feet too. “We’re not blood-related. You married into this family. I was already seventeen when you came into our lives. I’m not a child anymore.”

“That doesn’t make it okay,” Nathan said, his tone sharp.

“I’m not saying it is,” Ethan replied. “I’m saying it feels real. And whether or not it’s right doesn’t change that it’s already there.”

Nathan looked at him, something raw in his expression. “It would destroy this family if they knew.”

“I know.”

Vanessa. Sarah. The entire illusion of a perfect family would all shatter.

And yet, standing here, they both knew they were already too far gone. There was no denying it anymore.

Nathan walked to the window and stared out. “We need to stop. Whatever this is. Before it gets worse.”

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because deep down, he knew it would get worse because it already had.

Nathan turned back to face him, his voice softer now. “Promise me, Ethan. No more late-night conversations. No more lingering touches. We have to act like nothing ever happened.”

Ethan’s voice cracked slightly. “Can you do that?”

Nathan didn’t answer right away. Then: “I’ll try.”

That wasn’t enough. But maybe it was all they could give each other.

They stood in silence for a moment longer before Ethan nodded, more to himself than to Nathan. “Okay. Then we’ll forget it.”

Nathan gave a stiff nod.

But as Ethan turned to leave the room, he felt the weight of Nathan’s eyes on him. Watching. Regretting.

And longing.

…..

Downstairs, Sarah sat on the couch, legs crossed, scrolling through her phone.

When Ethan walked past her, she didn’t look up, but her voice followed him like a shadow.

“You two were gone a long time last night.”

Ethan froze.

She looked up now, eyes sharp. “In the bathroom. Then again this morning.”

Ethan gave her a blank look. “So?”

She smiled. “Just seems like you’re spending an awful lot of time with your stepdad these days.”

Ethan turned fully to face her. “What are you implying?”

Sarah stood up slowly, walking over until they were just inches apart. “I don’t know yet,” she said softly. “But I am watching.”

Ethan’s expression didn’t falter. “Then I hope you enjoy the show.”

She smirked. “I always do.”

And with that, she turned and disappeared down the hallway, leaving Ethan alone with the heavy silence.

He exhaled.

The storm wasn’t over.

It was only just beginning.

  • Our love to hide   chapter 15- the silence He left

Ethan’s voice echoed into nothing.“Nathan?”The silence that followed was a punch to the chest. No footsteps. No doors creaking. No voice saying his name in that low, steady way that always made the world feel less chaotic.Just stillness. The house was too quiet. Too clean. Like Nathan had never existed inside it at all.Ethan stumbled through the hallway, pulling open closet doors, drawers, and the bedroom . Half of the closet was empty. The drawer that used to hold Nathan’s watches and cufflinks? Gone. The cologne Ethan used to borrow without asking was missing.“No…”He gripped the edge of the dresser, his breath catching in his throat. This wasn’t just a moment of space.Nathan had left.Without a word. Without a goodbye. Without a fight.Ethan’s legs gave out and he sank to the floor, his back against the wall, his chest heaving like it couldn’t decide whether to sob or scream. All around him, the silence roared. This was what heartbreak sounded like. Not yelling. Not violence

  • Our love to hide   chapter 14- shattered glass

The silence was no longer peaceful. It was brittle. Ready to break.Ethan stood at the top of the stairs, staring down into the living room where Vanessa and Nathan sat across from each other. Not speaking. Not moving. Just… waiting.Waiting for the truth to crush them.He descended slowly, each step a thud in his chest. The moment Sarah had shown him the phone, the video, the sound of his own voice declaring love, it had all shattered something fragile inside him. Now, nothing could go back to how it was.Vanessa’s eyes rose to meet his. They were bloodshot, rimmed with betrayal. Not the fury he’d feared but worse. A quiet, haunted kind of heartbreak.“You should sit,” she said.He didn’t.Nathan turned toward him, his jaw tight. There were tears in his eyes but he blinked them away, burying them beneath a mask of resolve.“You told her?” Ethan asked, voice barely above a whisper.Nathan shook his head. “She overheard us. She recorded it.”Ethan’s eyes went to Vanessa. “And what did

  • Our love to hide   chapter 13

The days after Nathan opened his office door felt like borrowed time.Ethan woke in the quiet warmth of Nathan’s sheets, the scent of his cologne still clinging to the pillows. They hadn’t said much after that kiss in the garden. But they didn't need to. In the hush of that moment, something had shifted. They were no longer hiding from each other. But that didn’t mean they weren’t still hiding from the world.Nathan moved carefully through the house. No more locked doors, but still no stolen kisses outside their shared silence. At breakfast, he was Nathan, the stepfather, the businessman. Only in those late hours behind closed doors did he become Nathan, the man Ethan loved. It was a dangerous illusion. And Ethan knew it couldn’t last.Sarah noticed first. She stood one morning at the top of the stairs, watching them from behind the railing. Nathan reached out to brush something from Ethan’s shoulder, his fingers lingering just a second too long. It was subtle. Too subtle for most.Bu

  • Our love to hide   chapter 12

The new house was too quiet.Ethan stood in the hallway, one hand pressed to the wall as if trying to ground himself in this unfamiliar space. Everything about the house felt sterile. White walls. Marble floors. Silent hallways. A sanctuary Nathan had chosen to escape the old neighborhood’s watchful eyes. But it didn’t feel like home.Behind him, the door to Nathan’s office was closed. Locked. It had been for hours. Since the move, Nathan had grown distant again, buried in phone calls and schedules. Every time Ethan tried to reach for him, Nathan would pull away.Their moments had become brief. A brush of fingers when no one was watching. A lingering glance across the dinner table. Nothing more.It was like trying to hold on to smoke.Ethan walked into the living room, only to find Sarah sprawled across the couch, scrolling her phone. She looked up.“You look like you haven’t slept in days,” she said dryly.“Thanks,” Ethan replied, collapsing onto the other end of the couch. She ti

The Rivera-Cole household had never been quieter. After the move, Vanessa filled the silence with charity work and evening wine, Sarah vanished for longer hours at the university, and Nathan buried himself in contracts and board meetings. But Ethan felt this subtle collapse in the walls that once held their world together. It was in the way his mother avoided eye contact, the way Nathan’s hand no longer reached for his under the table, and the way his own breath caught whenever Mrs. Caldwell walked by their front gate with her judgmental smile.Everything felt like glass, shimmering and ready to shatter.Ethan sat on the back porch that afternoon, the sky overcast, a sketchpad resting on his lap. His fingers were stained with charcoal, but the lines he drew were lifeless abstract shadows of a world he couldn’t name. The sound of heels clicking against the wooden planks snapped his attention upward.Sarah.She leaned against the railing, a Red Bull in hand and a sarcastic grin on h

  • Our love to hide   chapter 10

The moment the door slammed behind Ethan, the house felt colder. He stormed into the garden, his chest tight, lungs burning. His mind wouldn’t stop racing. How could Sarah do this? That recording that betrayal wasn’t just a threat to him and Nathan. It was a loaded gun, cocked and ready to destroy everything. He gripped the fence with white-knuckled hands, trying to breathe, trying to make sense of it all.Behind him, footsteps crunched on the gravel.Nathan.“I didn’t know she recorded anything,” he said, his voice low but urgent. “I swear to you, Ethan.”Ethan turned, eyes shining with a mix of heartbreak and fury. “None of this would’ve happened if we hadn’t let it go this far.”Nathan stepped forward, but Ethan pulled away.“I’m not saying I regret it,” Ethan added quickly. “But we weren’t careful. And now she’s holding it over us like blackmail.”“She’s just angry,” Nathan said, though his voice lacked conviction. “Maybe she won’t do anything with it.”Ethan laughed bitterly. “
