Chapter 61

One week later.

The funeral blurred past like a bad dream , brief, unbearable, and impossibly final. Every ritual, every condolence, every hollow phrase from well-meaning strangers had passed over her like cold rain, leaving a numbness deeper than sleep. Rainee felt as if someone had carved away the center of her life and left only an aching shell. She could not grasp why she was still breathing when the people who had been her home were gone.

There was a small, cruel mercy in her blindness. Part of her was grateful she would never have to see them like that, how would she have been able to bear the sight? And yet grief does not trade cleanly for relief. She was haunted by regret, she had not been able to see them one last time, to memorize the lines of their faces, to press her forehead against their cheeks. The not-seen became a wound that would not heal.

For a week she did not speak. Sound seemed pointless, language, meaningless. Alex stayed by her side like a sentinel. He was w

The next morning, Rainee stepped out of her room and was immediately struck by the noise and movement filling the hallway. The faint scent of new fabric and polished wood lingered in the air. Her brows knit in confusion as she tightened her hold on the arm of the housekeeper walking beside her, the woman guiding her carefully so she wouldn’t stumble. “What’s happening?” Rainee asked softly, her voice tentative but curious. The woman helping her smiled faintly, though Rainee could sense the bustle behind her words. “Mr. Fraser has replaced all the furniture in the living room and in the areas you usually visit. Everything is now anti-collision and covered with padding to prevent any injuries. After you bumped into the table yesterday, he immediately ordered us to remove it and make sure everything is safe for you.” Rainee fell silent. Her fingers trembled against the housekeeper’s sleeve as she tried to process the information. Why would Alex go to such lengths? Why was he still tak

She struck him again and again on the chest with trembling fists, each blow weaker than the last yet full of unrelenting anguish. Alex Fraser didn’t move to stop her. He stood there, letting her pain rain down on him, his own tears sliding freely down his face. He had never felt so powerless. For all his wealth, his influence, his carefully built empire, none of it mattered in this moment. None of it could heal her, or return what she had lost. Words, presence, and quiet endurance were all he had to offer, and tonight even those felt pitifully small. Rainee's voice cracked as she screamed, the rawness in her throat echoing through the room. “IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT! IF YOU HADN’T CAGED ME, I WOULDN’T HAVE TRIED TO RUN AWAY WITH MY FAMILY. MY FAMILY WOULD STILL BE ALIVE IF YOU HADN’T LOCKED ME UP!” Her words sliced through him like shards of glass. Alex’s eyes widened, but he didn’t interrupt. He accepted every blow, every accusation, because if this was the only way she could pour out

Author POV “Rainee… a-all the lights are on. It’s d-daytime.” Her body went numb the moment she heard him. Panic crawled up from her chest and spread through her limbs like cold water. Her pupils darted left and right as if searching the world for something, anything, but it felt as though a thick, swallowing night had folded over her eyes. The ceiling, the machines, Alex’s face, nothing existed except a blank, indifferent black. “A-A-Alex... I c-can't see anything.” Alex's whole frame trembled with a terror he couldn't name. Helplessness sat heavy in his throat. He watched her struggle as if watching someone drown in slow motion. He swallowed, hoping, faintly, irrationally, that this was temporary blindness, some dizzy after-effect of the sleep she had been in. But looking at her now, she seemed trapped inside a nightmare that had nowhere to end. She reached out instinctively, fingers trembling, seeking purchase in the void: the bed rail, the bedside table, any proof that she wa

Rainee slipped into the car waiting outside the villa, her family already inside. The air was heavy with fear and uncertainty, but the moment her mother reached out to her, she felt a fleeting sense of safety. Jessica pulled her into a tight embrace, kissing her daughter’s forehead as if she could shield her from the world. “Did you get hurt?” Jessica’s voice trembled, barely above a whisper. “I’m totally fine, Mom,” Rainee assured her, forcing a calm tone she didn’t feel. She turned to her father. “Dad, we should leave now.” Barron’s face was set with grim determination. “Yes. We can’t risk taking a plane or any other transport. They’ll track us immediately.” Rainee nodded, the unspoken truth sinking in, they would have to run like fugitives, by road. Barron started the engine, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel. From the back seat, Sam leaned forward, his young eyes wide with a mix of confusion and worry. “Rainee… why did you do that to Alex? I don’t think he’s

“Think whatever you want.” Alex rose abruptly, his voice sharp with suppressed frustration, and disappeared into the bathroom. The sound of running water filled the silence of the room, a curtain between them and the argument left hanging in the air. When he emerged, steam trailing after him, Rainee was lying stiffly on her side, her eyes closed but her breaths too uneven to pass for genuine sleep. He slid under the covers and reached for her, wrapping an arm around her waist. He let out a heavy sigh, the kind that seemed to carry both exhaustion and relief. “I know it’s hard to stay inside all day, but trust me… I’m doing this for you. For your family.” “And you want me to believe that?” “Do you really think that just because you handed evidence to the police and they caught her, everything is over? Do you even know who her brother is? He’s a politician and a mayor, Rainee. A man with enough power to bury the truth. He’ll do anything, destroy evidence, twist the law, if it means
