“Forty million?” Even I was shocked at the amount someone was willing to pay to buy a human.
I heard the bidder call out, “Forty million going once… twice… three times… we have our buyer!”
Fear gripped me. I had never been this terrified in my entire life. Did this mean I was now his sex slave?
Then firm hands grabbed me, lifting me off the ground. I was carried into a car, and we drove off. My heart pounded against my ribs, the fear suffocating me. Minutes later, the car came to a halt, and rough hands dragged me out. I had no idea where I was, but the moment the door shut behind me, silence filled the air. I was still trapped in the hooded sack, unable to see anything. My hands remained tied, but at least my legs had been freed.
Moments later, the door creaked open. I heard approaching footsteps. My body tensed, dreading what would come next. Then, I felt my hands being untied, followed by the hooded sack being yanked off my head. Blinking against the dim light, my eyes adjusted, and I saw a man dressed in a black suit. He had no smile on his face, only cold indifference.
I quickly looked around. The room was unfamiliar.
“Go take a bath,” the stern-looking man ordered, pointing to a door.
I didn’t argue. I wiped my tears, I grabbed the towel resting on a cushion and dragged my feet toward the bathroom. My mind was a mess. Under the warm spray of water, I scrubbed my skin, trying to wash away the filth of what had just happened. But nothing could erase the fear coiling inside me.
After my shower, I stepped out, still feeling uneasy. The same man pointed at a dress lying on the bed.
“Wear that. I’ll be back,” he said before leaving.
I let out a shaky breath. My mind raced with too many questions, but none had answers. I slipped into the dress, surprised that it fit perfectly. Slowly, I walked to the window. My heart sank. It was too high to jump.
“If I were you, I wouldn’t dare.”
I froze as I turned to see the man standing there, his eyes locked on me. How had he entered without me noticing? My pulse quickened. Was he my buyer? Would he punish me for considering an escape?
“Follow me,” he said.
I swallowed hard. Was this it? Was he taking me to punish me? Was I about to lose my virginity to a man who had just bought me?
I trailed behind him cautiously, keeping my distance. We stepped into an elevator that took us to the top floor. As the doors slid open, he pointed ahead.
“The boss wants to see you.”
The boss? I thought he was the boss. The man left without another word. With a heavy heart, I dragged my feet forward. The room was dimly lit, and standing in front of a massive window, his back to me, was a tall, broad-shouldered man.
How was I supposed to announce my presence?
Like he already knew I was there, he turned.
And that was the moment I froze, my breath catching in my throat.
“Hello, sunshine,” he said, smirking at me, already amused by how perplexed I looked.
“Vi…to,” I stammered. It felt like a dream. Memories came flooding back, anger, hurt, confusion… so many emotions at once.
“Vito?” I called again, my voice barely above a whisper.
“I’ve been watching you, Ortensia,” he said, his tone calm but cold. “The second I heard your gambling stepbrother sold you at the Shadow Market, I had to intervene… But don’t mistake this for protection. I just didn’t want you to suffer in the wrong hands, doll.”
“What do you mean, Vito? It’s been ten years. You left… disappeared… only to return and buy me like you own me?” I tried to keep my voice steady, but I was shaking.
“Yes, doll. I own you now. And you’re going to pay for what you did. I won’t go easy on you.”
I scoffed, my chest tightening. “What are you talking about?” I was confused, but Vito just played with the ring on his finger, his sharp eyes studying me like I was some puzzle he was trying to figure out.
“I know who you are, who you work for. So drop the act,” he said, walking over to a bar. He grabbed a bottle, poured a drink into a glass filled with ice, swirled it slowly, then took a sip. He sat down, took another sip, and then pulled out something white. A cigarette? No, it was something stronger. He lit it, inhaled deeply, and exhaled the smoke into the air like a professional. The strong, bitter scent hit my nose, making me recoil.
He didn’t speak. Just sat there, drinking and smoking, while I stood frozen.Vito had changed a lot. The last time I saw him was ten years ago. He had been innocent back then. What had happened to turn him into this monster?
“Doll.” His voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
I noticed he had been calling me that since I got here. I wanted to say something about it, but his next words shut me up.
“You’ll pretend all you want, but wait for my revenge. I’m ready for it, doll.”
I froze. His words sent a chill down my spine. This was definitely not the Vito I once knew.
He stood and walked toward me.
Instinctively, I stepped backward. The closer he got, the more I retreated, until my back hit the wall. He caged me in, his hands pressing against the wall on either side of my head.
He smelled of alcohol, smoke, and expensive cologne.
“Now listen, doll. These are my three rules,” he said, biting his lower lip in a way that looked sexily.
“Number one: You will obey me without question, and your loyalty will be solely to me. You belong to me now. You won’t look at, touch, or even think about another man.” His dark eyes locked onto mine.
“Number two: You will not leave my estate without my permission. You won’t communicate with anyone outside these walls. Your old life is gone. You will be available to me at all times, whenever I want you, wherever I want you.”
I swallowed hard, my throat dry.
“And number three, the last but not the least: You will show me respect at all times. You will not question my authority. Disrespect will be punished. You’ll do as I say when I say it. Your pleasure, your pain… everything about you is mine to decide.”
I froze, I was scared.
I cursed Cayden for putting me in this situation. I was exhausted. It was already night, and all I wanted was to sleep and wake up to find this was just a nightmare.
But then, Vito’s hand wrapped around my neck… not tight enough to choke me, but enough to make me aware of his power. His face was so close, his lips hovering near mine. My breath hitched.
And then he whispered, “Lastly, you’ll kiss me every night before going to bed.”
The sudden vibration of my phone cut through the tense silence of the room. I snatched the device off the bedside table, my thumb swiping across the screen. The message was from an unknown, encrypted number. I read the words out loud in my head, each sentence dripping with mocking malice:You said you wanted revenge, that is why you took Ortensia in. You want her to pay for what happened to your late brother. So now that she is not with you anymore, why do you look so damn scared and worried?A cold, electric jolt of pure adrenaline slammed through my veins. I looked around the room, my eyes scanning the shadows, the dark windows, and the door. Someone was watching me. Someone knew exactly what I was thinking, exactly how much this was tearing me apart.Without a word, I reached under my pillow and pulled out my gun, the matte-black steel reassuringly cold against my palm. The metallic click of the safety catching echoed in the small space. Instantly, Enzo and Rico reacted to the shif
The silver platter sat completely untouched on the long, polished dining table, the steam from the prepared food rising slowly before dissipating into the cold, stagnant air of the massive room. Ortensia didn't eat with Valentino, even though he had asked her to do so multiple times with that perfectly polite, mask-like smile of his. Her stomach was tied in knots, and the very sight of the man sitting across from her made her skin crawl. She sat rigid in her high-backed chair, her eyes wide with a volatile mixture of raw anger, terror, and utter disbelief. The grand dining room felt less like a sanctuary and more like a beautifully decorated cage, its high ceilings echoing the tense silence that stretched between them."How?" Ortensia finally asked, her voice trembling but loud enough to cut through the quiet room. She looked at the man who had orchestrated her terrifying abduction from the restaurant, demanding to know how he could possibly claim to be her father."If you are truly
VITO:Just as I thought, Dr. Alex was dirty. I looked over at Enzo."Enzo," I muttered, my voice cutting through the quiet room. "The plate number. The one I managed to scratch down before the warehouse doors slammed. I need you to run it right now. Look it up, and find out exactly whose name is on that registration."Before Enzo could even pull out his device to start the trace, the wooden door burst open with a loud, aggressive bang. Rico walked into the room, his clothes slightly disheveled and his breathing ragged, as if he had just run up the entire flight. He stopped dead in his tracks, looking directly at me, sitting up in the bed wrapped in white bandages.Rico balled his fists so tightly, his jaw clenching with pure frustration. "Boss," he rasped, his voice thick with guilt. "I am so sorry. I apologize with everything I have. I wasn't here when the ambush went down. Miss Ortensia... she is not here right now because I was late. If I had just been a few minutes faster, I coul
VITO:I opened my eyes, blinking hard against the stinging, aggressive glare of bulb directly above me. As the blurry shapes in the room began to settle, Dr. Alex’s face came into focus right above my bedside. She was smiling down at me, that perfectly calm smile that usually meant absolutely nothing good was about to follow."Alex," I croaked. My throat felt like it was coated in thick layer of dry sand, and my vocal cords scraped together painfully. Then, the fog in my brain cleared all at once, and the memories hit me. The flashing muzzle lights. The wet, hot pooling of blood. Ortensia’s desperate screams echoing through the dark warehouse right before the doors slammed shut. I looked up at the doctor, my chest heaving as pure adrenaline flooded my system."Alex... You did this?"Her smile faltered for a fraction of a second. How can she make me sleep for long knowing Ortensia was in danger? She adjusted the IV drip line connected to the back of my hand. "I had to, Vito. You were l
ORTENSIA How dare he say he is not my enemy when it seems like he is the exact definition of one?The words echoed like a joke in my mind as the heavy door clicked shut behind him. He had just orchestrated an ambush, left the man I belonged to bleeding out on a restaurant floor, dragged me across the city, and casually executed a woman right in front of me. Yet, he wanted me to believe he was my protector.Numbly, I moved toward the frosted glass door on the left side of the room. Every single step felt like I was walking through thick mud. I entered the bathroom, my breath catching at the luxury of the space, but I couldn't care less about the marble or the gold fixtures. I turned on the water, watching it steam, and began the agonizing process of peeling off my clothes.Bathing was pure torture. I had to keep my right arm elevated, cradling it against my torso while using my left hand to wash away the dirt, the sweat of my terror, and the dark, dried smears of Vito's blood. Seeing
The world seemed to tilt violently on its axis, spinning out of control until the room became a blur of walls and terrifying realities. My breathing stuttered, catching like broken shards of glass in my throat as I stared at the man standing in the doorway. The silence that followed his words was suffocating. It pressed down on my chest, making it completely impossible to draw a full breath of air into my lungs.I must have seen wrong. Or maybe I had heard wrong. The trauma of the ambush at the restaurant, the blinding pain radiating from my arm, and the gut-wrenching terror of watching Vito collapse had finally driven me insane. My mind had to be playing tricks on me. It was twisting his voice, distorting the words because my psyche was fracturing under the weight of too much grief and horror. It had to be a hallucination. There was simply no other logical explanation.Mr. Valentino. He had just used a word that did not belong to me. A word that completely shattered the foundation of
Ortensia wasn't just crying, she was leaking soul-deep agony, the kind of raw, jagged weeping that made her small frame shudder.“Ortensia, please,” Vito begged. The sound was wrong… it was a crack in a voice that was supposed to be made of iron and blood. He reached for her, his large hands trembl
“It’s okay,” Ortensia said softly, her voice breaking the tension. “I’m also sorry for what I said yesterday. I shouldn't have accused you of using me as bait. I know you would never endanger my life like that.”She reached out, her fingers grazing his sleeve. Vito looked down at her hand, his expr
The morning light filtered through the arched windows of the estate, but for Ortensia, the brightness felt like an intrusion. Every muscle in her body ached, a physical manifestation of the trauma from the night before.Vito’s words… ungrateful whore, echoed in her mind louder than the sound of the
I stood frozen, my heart felt like a frantic drum against my ribs as Vito’s confession made me speechless. Why am I even speechless, when he is a monster… a killer.“That is why he doesn't want to be celebrated on his birthday… he remembers,” he said.It all clicked into place… the way Enzo flinch
