The air in the penthouse was different now, heavier than the night before. It clung to Raven’s skin like smoke, and no amount of steady breathing could shake it. The message still burned in her pocket, its words seared into her thoughts: Leave the past buried, or the next move will be irreversible.

Jaxon stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, the skyline haloing him in pale morning light. His bare chest rose and fell with measured calm, but Raven recognized the control for what it was, a mask, stretched tight over something dangerous and barely contained.

“Tell me exactly what it said,” he ordered, not turning around.

Raven hesitated, knowing full well that every word would sharpen his rage. “They know I found the records. They said Evelyn’s closer than we think.”

Jaxon’s jaw flexed. He turned, slow and deliberate, like a predator pivoting toward prey. “Closer than we think?” he echoed. “That means someone inside this city. Someone near us.”

His voice was so steady it scared her more

“Good. Let him think he’s ready. By the time I’m done, he won’t even see me coming.” Jaxon’s voice was flat, a blade without shine. Marco had seen him angry before, but this wasn’t anger, it was focus and that was far more dangerous.“Crew’s ready when you are,” Marco said quietly.“Not yet.” Jaxon spread a map across the table, marking routes in red ink. “We hit his perimeter first, bleed him slow. I want his guards twitchy and tired when I walk through that door.”Marco hesitated. “And Raven?”Jaxon’s hand tightened on the pen. “She’s alive. Zane wouldn’t kill her, not yet. He thinks she’s leverage.” A muscle ticked in his jaw. “He’s wrong.”Raven sat on the edge of the leather sofa, wrists raw from the ropes. The lamp buzzed overhead, throwing long shadows that made the room feel smaller than it was. Zane Morreau stood near the window, phone in hand, watching the rain streak down the glass like prison bars. His grin was gone now, replaced by something brittle. Paranoia crept throug

“Tomorrow we make them pay. Painstakingly. Every last one of them.” Those were the words ringing in Raven’s ears when she finally left Jaxon’s office in the gray haze before dawn. Her legs still felt unsteady, not from fear but from the sheer heat of his presence, his promise, his claim. Whatever rift had been between them was gone, burned away by something fiercer than love, sharper than anger. The city outside the club was quiet. The kind of hush that comes before a storm.Zane Morreau was having the kind of morning that could make a man believe in curses. First, three of his offshore accounts were frozen without warning. Then one of his lieutenants, his own cousin, was found stuffed into a trunk, alive but barely breathing, with a silver coin pressed into his bloody palm.A coin Jaxon used to leave as a warning, back when they were boys running street corners. Zane hadn’t seen that coin in years. He sat in the back of his armored SUV, swirling whiskey in a crystal tumbler, watching

The bass from Club Eden throbbed through the soles of Raven’s heels as she pushed through the velvet entrance curtain. The crowd swallowed her in its heat and perfume, but she felt cold all the way to the bone. Word traveled fast in this city, too fast. Every headline about her article was a blade, but the ones whispering Jaxon’s name cut deepest. She hadn’t spoken to him since that last explosion of anger, since the look he’d given her, like she was a stranger he wanted to strangle and kiss all at once.Marco, Jaxon’s ever-watchful lieutenant, was waiting by the stairs to the mezzanine. The dark suit didn’t soften his broad shoulders or the hard set of his jaw.“Raven,” he said, voice pitched low. “Don’t go up there.”“I don’t have time for this,” she shot back, not even slowing. His hand shot out, iron on her arm. “I mean it. Not tonight. He’s in no mood to...”She jerked her arm free, temper snapping. “Then he can tell me himself.”Marco stepped in front of her on the stairs, block

Jaxon didn’t sleep. By dawn, his penthouse was still lit, whiskey glass untouched on the table. His phone kept vibrating, Dante’s damage reports, security alerts, whispers from the club about staff questioning his leadership. But one message froze him more than the rest.A photo.Raven, slipping out of the building at midnight. The timestamp matched the exact window he’d asked her not to leave, and the sender? Zane. No words. No threats. Just proof. The glass cracked in his fist.By afternoon, Club Eden was a storm. The article Raven had written, or rather, the one Zane had leaked, had everyone on edge. It didn’t name Jaxon outright, but the descriptions were too precise to be coincidence. Politicians were pulling their funding, inspectors were crawling all over the place, and staff were whispering about betrayal.Jaxon kept his face like stone as he walked through the club, but inside his temper was razor-thin. Every nervous glance from his employees felt like a test of loyalty. Ever

The Morreau estate was quiet, too quiet. That old kind of quiet that doesn’t soothe, only lets ugly thoughts echo louder.Jaxon sat alone in the study, a crystal glass untouched at his elbow, staring at a set of surveillance photos spread across the table. Each one blurred, grainy, but clear enough to make his jaw tighten. Raven, in the wrong part of the city. Raven, meeting someone Jaxon didn’t recognize. Raven, glancing over her shoulder like she knew she shouldn’t be there. It could’ve been nothing, but nothing didn’t look this secretive.Marco leaned against the doorway, arms folded. “You gonna ask her about it?”“No.” Jaxon didn’t look up.“Why not?”“Because I want the truth, not a story she thinks I’ll believe.”Marco watched him a moment, then shrugged. “You’re running hot, boss. Zane’s playing you, trying to make you jump at shadows.”“Then I’ll make sure the shadows bleed when I hit back.”That morning had started with another phone call Dante didn’t like making.“Shipment a

The morning broke red over the old Morreau estate, a bloody sun splitting the horizon. Jaxon didn’t notice it. He stood in front of the massive glass wall of his office, phone buzzing endlessly on the desk behind him, and stared at the city below as if he could crush it with his eyes. The article was everywhere. Everywhere. Not just in the underground feeds where Raven’s pieces normally lived. This had been fed directly to the largest media outlets, splashed on front pages, dissected by anchors with sharp smiles. Names were named. Deals were described. The kind of information only someone on the inside would know. And at the bottom of every column, stamped like a bullet casing, was the byline. Raven Knight.Jaxon hadn’t seen her yet. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to. Rage, cold and surgical, spread through him, not the wildfire Zane always expected, but something deadlier. The door opened without a knock, only one man in his world had that right. Marco, his most trusted lieutenant, plac
