SPADE

Max looked at me in confusion, as if asking me if she didn’t know it yet.

“No.”

“What’s going on?” Robyn wasn’t upset or angry. In fact, she looked amused and attentive at the same time. She waited for us to answer her as she chewed a small slice of her steak.

“I’m not telling her, man.” Max raised his hands, leaving me alone to deal with her.

“Okay.” She placed the cutlery on her plate. “Now, I’m more curious. Come on, guys. Tell me.”

“I’ll go first.” Max sipped his red wine first before starting. “You might not remember this, but I lived a few blocks from your house.”

“Excuse me?” Robyn looked shocked, shifting her gaze between me and Max.

“Only for two years before we transferred to another foster home,” I followed up.

Her excitement quickly died down, and so did her twinkling, expressive eyes. I had a feeling she knew why. Most of us foster kids either got adopted or moved to another home due to safety issues or our behavior.

“Oh. You don’t have to tell me.” Her voice wa

ROBYNMy conversation with Dani shed some light. Was Spade really in love with me? I also believed everyone had their own way of expressing themselves and their feelings. But there was no way he was in love with me. Maybe he just enjoyed my lack of experience in bed.Deep inside, I was hopeful that it might be true, that there might be a chance for us beyond the agreement. A girl could dream, right? Just don’t get it into her head, Robyn. After his confession that he lied about stalking me, a part of me believed he was telling the truth, but there was still a part of me that was hurt, that had doubts, considering his history of threatening the people around me, like my ex and my roommate. As we got back to the summer house, which was great with a breathtaking view, Piper retreated into her room. I was left with Spade on the terrace that overlooked the ocean. “I wanna stay here for a while,” I informed him. He nodded, looking at the ocean. There was something about the sound of sof

ROBYN“Oh, my God.” I almost choked on my food, and they were delicious. The red wine was amazing with a distinct smoky taste. “Do you like red wine?”“Yeah.” I nodded. “It’s so good.”She smiled proudly. “His family owns the wine. The one you’re drinking is named after me.” Terzo smiled proudly at his wife. I could see how much they loved and respected each other. Even a blind person could see it.I picked up the bottle and read the name, “Aristide. Your name is Aristide?”“Well, my name is Danielle Leonie Aristide. We named our son Leone, so Aristide is for the wine because he promised me he would name a wine after me.”“You deserved it, beautiful,” Terzo told his wife.“Aw.” Piper giggled. “He’s so sweet.”Terzo laughed. “People have portrayed the mafia like me in movies as murderers and dangerous. I am still dangerous, but I already have a heart, and I love my family more than anything in this world, Piper. I still have enemies here and there, but if they touch the hair of one o

ROBYN“Your first time in Italy, too?” Spade asked Piper. One thing I liked about Spade, he didn’t keep me all to himself. He allowed me to be with my best friend. I guessed he was right. He only kept good people for me, but what he did was still wrong. I couldn’t let this one go.“Yes, and I’m liking it already,” she said as we rode through the streets of Sicily. “Wait until you taste the authentic Italian cuisine,” I teased her. She was sitting behind me and Spade.“As if you’ve been in Italy before,” she said, smiling. “If I like Italians, maybe I should hook up with one of the mafia,” she whispered the last sentence.“You’re promiscuous.” I widened my eyes at her. I knew she was joking, but I could see Spade trying to hide his smile. “He heard me, didn’t he?” She was still whispering.Smiling, Spade turned to her. “You weren’t even subtle about it. Terzo has two single cousins. They’re very Italian.”“What do you mean by very Italian?” she asked.“Don’t encourage her.” I grippe

SPADERobyn didn’t even try to hide the anger blazing in her eyes. She really hated me. I couldn’t blame her. I lied to her, blackmailed her into marriage, put her life at risk, and used her to my convenience. I also felt that she still cared about me, but it might not be for long. We arrived at the summer house in Sicily. It was more of a safe house, per se, owned by Moses Braddson. “Oh, my God, babe! Look at the view.” Piper couldn’t help but gush at the clear blue ocean on the horizon. “It’s breathtaking.”I also rented a yacht so that we could get away from the chaos for a while. I didn’t just bring them here for vacation. They were here for their safety when Terzo and the Osmium promised me their protection. Robyn and Piper didn’t have to know that I had men watching them 24/7. Robyn wrapped her arms around her best friend. “I’m glad you’re okay.”“I still remember what happened before things went black. I’m so sorry, babe. You must have been terrified last night,” Piper said

ROBYN“Of course, what is it?” He hadn’t said a word, and my heart had already begun racing. But I mean, what could be worse than being held at gunpoint with a flying bullet just mere inches from my head, right? He came to sit next to me, taking a deep breath. “I don’t even know where to start.”I turned to face him. “Why don’t you start from the beginning? Anyway, we’re still hours from arriving in Italy, right? So we have all the time in the world.”He nodded, seemingly nervous about what he was about to tell me. “While in college, I was an intern at Kross Industries, but not as an adopted son. No one knew about it outside the family. I kept it that way so that employees would see me as an intern. Just as I finished college, and eventually started working in finance. Then I met this girl.”So this was all about a girl. I wanted to roll my eyes.“Okay.” I wanted to be supportive and understanding. After what happened earlier, I couldn’t be mad at him any longer. He did what he could

ROBYNI bit back the curse, fighting the urge to stop him and listen more to his poor excuses. I felt like he was still holding something back, and I wanted to open his layers and find out. I knew it would be challenging, but I started to care about him. Despite his triggering darker nature, I knew there was good within him. There was that light still engulfed in darkness. But I was still horror-struck by his confession. “Agh!” I dropped myself on the couch and curled up. “It’s already late. You’re tired, and I’m tired.” Piper yawned. That was the third time in a row. “I’ll keep the door open when you decide to sleep in my room. It’s more comfortable in bed, babe.”“Thanks, Pip.” I raised my hand, waving. “Turn off the light on your way. Love you.”“Love you, too. Good night.”Groaning, I punched the pillow and lay down. I wrapped my body with the blanket, trying to sleep, but my mind was still wide awake. “What the hell am I doing?” I threw the blanket away and grabbed my phone.
