Alyssa’s Pov

“It’s time to leave. The school has called us all back.” The guys informed me as they trooped in.

I ensured to avoid eye contact with the triplets as it felt so cringe to look at them right now due to the dream I had about them twice. I just hoped this would be the last time I would have this dream because I can’t bear this feeling anymore, neither can I keep up with it every single time.

I rose to my feet and found a corner to change into my usual clothes and then we hit the road.

Soon, we got back to the school and we were all gathered at the hall as there was an important announcement to be made.

“I wonder what they have to say to us.” Ethan said as he stared at the podium which hadn’t occupied anyone yet.

“Same here. I hope it’s good news.” I said and let out a sigh.

Suddenly, the triplets appeared out of nowhere by my side and I felt so much tension that it became difficult for me to breathe and think right.

Gosh. Why do they have to appear now? Don’t they have a

211Alyssa’s POVThe night breeze was soft, cool against my skin, carrying the faint scent of pine and the earth after a long day of sun. My room was quiet, too quiet, and though I’d tried to lie down, rest wouldn’t come. I wasn’t used to this kind of peace, not yet. Not when the echoes of my old life still lingered just behind my thoughts.I got up and quietly opened the door, careful not to make too much noise. The hall was dim, lit only by torches mounted to the stone walls. No one was around. A few warriors were stationed here and there, but they didn’t stop me. Maybe they’d been told not to, or maybe I just looked harmless.I made my way down the corridor and out through the side doors that led into the open grounds. The air outside was even cooler, and the stars were scattered across the sky like scattered salt. The field stretched wide before me, surrounded by tall trees and the silhouettes of buildings set farther back. It was quiet here. Peaceful.I walked slowly, barefoot on

210Clara walked briskly down the hallway, her shoes making soft taps against the wooden floor. Her heart beat a little faster than usual, not from fear, but from urgency. She had just returned from the garden, and the moment she was out of sight, she rushed to find her mistress. She reached Delilah’s door and knocked twice before entering. She had to make sure she wasn’t pissing her mistress off.Delilah sat near the window, brushing her long black hair. The golden robe she wore shimmered softly in the light, and as Clara stepped in, she quickly lowered her gaze and curtsied.“Mistress,” she said respectfully, her voice calm but eager. “I have something to tell you.”Delilah didn’t turn around yet. “It better be important, Clara. You know I hate interruptions during my evening routine.”“It is, Mistress. It’s about the girl, the new one that was brought in yesterday.”That got Delilah’s attention. She slowly turned to face Clara, one eyebrow raised. “The one the Alpha had carried fro

209Alyssa’s POVI didn’t know how long I stared at the wall after he said those words. Pregnant? It sounded strange in my ears. I placed a shaky hand on my stomach and tried to feel something, just anything. But it was flat. Nothing showed. Yet the physician said it was two months old.Tears rolled down my cheeks again. I wasn’t ready for this; not now, not with everything I had lost. Not with Tara gone.“How can this be happening to me?” I whispered, wiping my face with the back of my hand. How could I be pregnant for the triplets who didn’t give a damn about me? It was as if the moon goddess just wanted my bad luck to continue even after leaving the Spring Pack.Alpha Desmond left the room after assuring me I was safe here. That should have made me feel better, but I was still scared. I didn’t know these people. I didn’t know their rules, and I wasn’t sure I could trust anyone. But his words kept echoing in my head.“You have a new life waiting to be born, and you have to be strong

208Alyssa’s PovWhen I realized that I couldn’t hear the warriors’ footsteps anymore, I managed to get up to my feet. The wounds I had gotten were so painful that I didn’t know that I had also been hit by an arrow.I walked back out of the cave and into the woods, trying to find my way to anywhere, somewhere that could become a freedom place for me. A place where I wouldn’t have to be a maid anymore and no one would continue to try to get me into trouble.I continued dragging my feet with so much spiraling through my body. Tears flowed down my eyes, and my heart was beating heavily in sadness. While dragging my feet, Tara’s smiling face kept popping up in my head. I couldn’t believe she was gone, my best friend was gone for eternity.“The one person who has always supported me… why is it that she had to leave this world? Why did it have to be at Lthe expense of my freedom?” I said, sniffling and sobbing gently. It would be worse if my noise attracted people who could steal my freedom

207Alyssa’s PovI ran. I ran like my life depended on it, because it truly did. The night air brushed against my face while branches clawed at my arms and legs. My bare feet tore open on rocks and roots, but I didn’t slow down. All I could hear was my ragged breathing and my heartbeat, loud and frantic like it wanted to burst out of my chest.Behind me, I heard the guards’ loud voices echo through the trees. I didn’t dare look back. I knew exactly what I would see, torches bobbing like angry fireflies, bows drawn, arrows ready. They had nearly caught me when I slipped past the pack’s gate. If Tara hadn’t grabbed my hand and shoved me ahead, I would have frozen right there.“Run, Alyssa. Don’t look back.”That was the last thing she told me.The memory made my chest burn. I pushed myself harder, lungs on fire, legs trembling as I crashed through bushes and leapt over fallen logs. Rain was in the air, I could smell it coming. I prayed it would fall soon, wash away my scent, my tracks,

206Alyssa’s POVTara didn’t answer me right away that night. She just sat there on my bed, her hand in mine, her eyes shining with tears she wouldn’t let fall. I could see the war in her, the part that wanted to protect me and the part that was so afraid for both of us.Finally, her shoulders slumped like she had dropped something too heavy to carry. She squeezed my hand so tight it almost hurt.“Okay,” she whispered. Her voice trembled but her eyes were steady now, the way they always were when she had decided on something. “Okay, Alyssa. We’ll go. We’ll run.”The words didn’t feel real until she said them out loud. My breath caught in my chest. For the first time in so long, the air didn’t feel like poison in my lungs. We didn’t waste time. Tara wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve and got up so quickly, I almost didn’t recognize her, my quiet, careful Tara moving with a sharpness I had never seen. She grabbed the old cloth bag from under my bed and dumped it on the blanket.
