“Honestly, I took you for a different kind of person,” Steven said. His arms were still crossed, and his eyes did not leave my face.

“No, sir. I think you have got this wrong.” My voice came out smaller than I intended. “I didn’t look carefully before I went in. I’m sorry. It wasn’t intentional.”

“You know, I have seen a lot of people try to seduce me. Not only women, men too.” He exhaled slowly, as though the subject exhausted him. “It is irritating. Love is supposed to come genuinely.”

The moment he finished, a heavy lump settled in my throat. Of all the things he could have accused me of, this was the one I had never imagined. My face burned, and I wanted the floor to open and swallow me whole.

“Honestly, sir, it wasn’t intentional,” I repeated.

“I hope so.”

That was all he said. He turned and walked away, while my pulse hammered in my ears. I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding and wished, with everything in me, that I could turn back time, even by five minutes.

I had barely steadied myself when I saw Natasha heading in our direction.

She walked like a woman who knew that every eye in the room belonged to her. A designer bag worth millions hung from her arm, her outfit was flashy and flawless, and a pair of model-style eyeglasses sat perfectly on her face. Even the air seemed to rearrange itself around her.

“Good morning, my love,” she said sweetly, reaching up to adjust Steven’s tie.

Then she hugged him. Her face was turned directly toward me over his shoulder, and she gave me a look I could not read. It was not quite a smile, and it was not quite a warning. It lingered just long enough to make my skin prickle, and then it was gone.

When she pulled away, her tone was light, almost playful. “Mmm… don’t get me wrong, but someone asked me a question that has been troubling me ever since.”

“What is it?” Steven asked. “Feel free to tell me.”

“She said it was the kind of question a fiancée always asks herself.” Her gaze drifted to me for a moment, then returned to him. “If someone told you I was cheating on you, would you believe it?”

Steven considered her for a while. “Judging by how things look, I don’t think you could.”

“Okay, so you don’t fully trust me?”

“Of course I trust you. But the truth lies within the heart.”

Natasha rolled her eyes. “Fine. I can’t cheat on you, okay?”

She laughed, and the moment passed as though nothing had happened. Still, a quiet unease followed me for the rest of the day. It was a small, nagging feeling that those words had not been meant for Steven alone. Apart from that, everything went smoothly, and I was grateful for it.

When I got home, my mother was waiting for me with an expression that said she had news.

“You will not believe this,” she began. “Rui and Nora have moved into the house nearby. The one you saw him around earlier.”

I stared at her. “What?”

“They moved in this afternoon.”

I felt the blood drain from my face. Had Rui done this on purpose? Why would he not simply let me be? I had spent so long trying to build a quiet life without him in it, and now he had planted himself a few steps from my front door.

I mumbled something polite and escaped to my room, my mind spinning with the news. I dropped onto the edge of my bed and tried to breathe. Then, almost without meaning to, I glanced toward the window.

Across the way, in the new house, two figures stood close together in a lit room. The light was behind them, which made them easy to see from outside, as if they had forgotten that anyone could be watching. They were wrapped in a romantic moment, his arms around her, her head tilted toward his.

I did not need to be told who they were. It had to be Rui and Nora.

I pulled the curtain shut at once and stepped back, my heart beating faster than I wanted to admit.

It was none of my business, I told myself. They could do whatever they wanted, and I truly did not care. But why, of all the places in the city, had they chosen to live so close to me? I hoped they simply liked the house. I hoped it was only that, and not that they wanted to play games with me.

Just then, my phone buzzed. It was a message from Ethan.

Have you gotten the voice recording?

I sighed and held the phone against my chest for a second. Ethan and I had been planning to get that recording for some time now. It was the one thing that could prove I had not done what everyone believed. I did not want revenge, and I did not want to win. All I wanted was to live my life in peace, without Rui interfering in it. Yet it seemed that was impossible.

I typed a reply slowly: Not yet. I’m working on it.

Three dots appeared almost immediately, vanished, and appeared again. Ethan was clearly weighing his words.

Finally, his message arrived.

"Listen, I have been thinking. What if we fake date? If Rui sees you with someone else, he will finally believe you have moved on. Maybe then he will leave you alone."

I stared at the screen, unsure whether to laugh or to panic.

Fake dating. With Rui living a few steps away and Natasha’s strange look still replaying in my mind, it sounded like either the best idea or the worst one I had ever heard.

I put the phone down and looked at the curtain, behind which the light across the way still glowed.

The decision to accept began echoing in my head, louder with every second I stared at that glowing window.

I was stunned as the woman continued. "And what are you still doing here? Are you trying to win my son back?" I stared at her in disbelief. Just then, the younger woman stepped forward. "No, Mother, she is not Natasha." She moved closer to her mother's side. "Have you forgotten what she looks like?" I let out a breath as I realized she had mistaken me for someone else. Steven appeared from the other side of the entrance. "Mother, welcome. This is Emilia, my assistant. Emilia, this is my mother, Mrs. Ivy, and my sister, Miss Sophia." I greeted them warmly and hoped they would be kind to me, especially after Mrs. Ivy had taken me for Natasha. Perhaps it was only her age. I watched as they carried their small bags upstairs, with the maid helping them. Later, I sat at my desk and gazed out of the window, at the right side, as I always did. My elbow rested on the table and my cheek against my palm. This time, I was not thinking about Rui. I was thinking about Steven's words

I held the necklace in my palm. It was definitely my sister's. I recognized the tiny scratch near the clasp. "But why didn't you give it to me sooner?" I asked. Ethan shrugged. "I forgot. Honestly, I could not tell you why." I studied his face for a moment, then closed my fingers around the chain. "Thank you. This means a great deal to my family." When I finally got home, I found Mia and placed the necklace in her hands. "Keep it safe," I told her. She nodded and held it close. I let the matter rest, though a quiet doubt lingered at the back of my mind. The next morning, I was standing in front of Steven's desk because he had called me in. I expected another task, another schedule change, another demand. It was something else entirely. "I heard about what happened before your marriage ended," he said. "I know I should not listen to other people's personal lives, but I think I should say this. Honestly, when I..." He paused and adjusted his tie, as though the words had caug

The words Steven had spoken echoed in my ears, and my eyes watered until the room blurred. Or are you the kind of assistant who believes she can get her way with her boss? My eyes moved restlessly across his face, searching for any sign that he regretted it. I stepped back, ready to leave, but Steven suddenly rushed toward me. "Damn it, I am so sorry. I did not mean it." I tried to break free, but he held on to my hands. When I turned my face away, he gently drew my attention back to him, pressing my hands together between his own. "I am truly sorry, Emilia. Please." It was astonishing. The man who had spoken so cruelly only moments ago was now pleading with me. "How could you?" I looked straight into his eyes. "Do you think that because I work for you, I am cheap? You are unbelievable." He did not let go, even when I pulled harder. "I was angry," he said quietly. "I had just realized that Natasha only ever loved me for my money. That is not an excuse. I know it is not

Ethan's eyes were hungry as he stared at me. He had no twin, and I was certain it was really him standing in front of me. "Stop it." I pushed his hand away, but he only stepped closer. Ethan had been my friend for more than twenty years, and I had never expected this from him. "I have always liked you," he said. "You are more than a friend to me. I was afraid to say it, but you don't have to be afraid of me." I backed away until my shoulders touched the door. My ears had heard the words, but my mind refused to accept them. Then, without warning, Ethan sank to the floor and knelt there with his head bowed, as though he were thinking. Was he telling the truth? I asked myself. I could not leave him like that, so I crouched down to help him up. That was when I noticed something was off. A sharp smell of alcohol reached my nose. I looked around the room and saw an open bottle on the edge of the table. He was drunk. I helped him to the sofa and stayed beside him until he fin

I sent a message to the unknown number. I wrote whatever came to mind, one thought after another, but there was no reply. The next morning, I went to work anyway. I walked into Steven's office already rehearsing my explanation, but I never got the chance to deliver it. Steven was already waiting when I walked in. He looked up, and his gaze sharpened. "Where is your phone?" he asked. "You haven't been picking up your calls." I hesitated. Without meaning to, I clasped my hands in front of me, as though that small barrier could shield me from his temper. "I lost it, sir. Last night. I promise I will replace it today after work." He studied me for a long moment, then leaned closer. I had been careful not to look at him; I did not trust my eyes . But when I finally glanced up, I found him watching them, unblinking, as if the truth might be written there. "Are you sure?" "Yes." He straightened and said, "Come with me." "Where are we going, sir?" "Just come. You will kn

I was sitting outside on a wooden chair, a cup of coffee warming my hands, I felt peaceful. I took a slow sip and let my eyes wander over the garden. I had the whole day to myself. It felt like finally remembering how to breathe. On the other end of the chair, I found a small bag of seeds. I scattered a handful on the ground and watched two birds hop closer to eat. They stayed side by side, so close their wings almost touched. "Lovebirds," I whispered, and I smiled. I remembered something my mother used to say: when you accidentally see two creatures close together, eating or even mating, it means your own match is near. I laughed softly at the thought. Then a hand touched my shoulder. "Wow, two birds," my mother said, leaning over me. "They must be a male and a female." I looked back at them. They had moved even closer and were gently rubbing their necks together. My mother smiled knowingly at me, and I shook my head, though my cheeks felt warm. The peace did not last.
