I stepped out of my house, savoring the cool morning air and the early gossip of the birds. Everything felt calm, almost perfect, until something made me pause.

A familiar figure stood a short distance away, close to my neighbor's house, the big mansion on the other side of the street. It was Rui.

He wasn't far away, and I could see him clearly.

I didn't think much of it. Rui was an engineer, after all, and engineers went wherever their work took them. I shrugged off the thought, climbed into my car, and drove away.

I had barely reached the main road when the weather turned. Heavy rain began to fall without warning, and the sky darkened until it looked more like evening than morning. I tightened my grip on the steering wheel. A little rain was not going to stop me.

Then the engine coughed, shuddered, and died.

"No, no. Not today," I whispered, turning the key again and again. Nothing happened. I leaned back in my seat, deeply disappointed.

I called a car repairer, and he arrived twenty minutes later, soaked and apologetic. After a quick inspection, he shook his head. The problem was serious, and it could not be fixed on the spot. I would have to wait, and I had no idea for how long.

But I couldn't wait. I thought of my boss and what he would say if I arrived late. He had never yelled at me, and I intended to keep it that way.

"Okay, then," I said with a sigh. "I'll take a taxi."

By the time I finally reached the office, I was drenched. My clothes clung to my skin, and there were muddy stains along my hem from the dash between the car, the taxi, and the entrance. The thought of sitting in a clean office chair in that state made me deeply uncomfortable.

Steven was already there, standing near his desk with a file in his hand. He looked up as I entered, and I felt my face grow warm.

"Sir, I am really sorry," I said, glancing down at myself. "My clothes are..."

Before I could finish, he lifted his hand to stop me.

"Don't worry about it," he said calmly. "Go ahead and freshen up. The room on your left is the guest room."

"Thank you, sir."

I hurried inside, shut the door, and let the warm water run over me. The chill of the rain slowly melted away, though a few cold shivers still lingered as the temperature of the room settled around me. For the first time that morning, I could breathe.

Then I reached for something to dry myself with, and my hand met only air.

There was no towel. I searched the small bathroom twice, hoping I had simply overlooked it, but there was nothing at all. Nothing to wrap around myself, not even a robe.

Think, I told myself. Just dry off and find something quickly.

I stepped out of the bathroom, hoping to find a cabinet or a shelf in the room beyond. Before I could take another step, I heard a sharp click. It was the sound of the door handle turning.

My heart stopped.

The door swung open, and Steven stood in the doorway.

For a moment, neither of us moved. I was frozen with shock, and so, clearly, was he. The silence stretched between us, heavy and unbearable.

"M-mm... I'm so sorry!" I gasped, darting behind the door and pressing myself against the wall, my face burning with shame.

Through the narrow gap, I caught a glimpse of his expression. It was not anger, exactly. It was something closer to disappointment, or perhaps disbelief. Without a word, he stepped back and closed the door.

I let out a long, shaky breath. "I thought this was the guest room," I whispered.

It was only then that I truly looked around. The large bed, the neatly arranged shelves, the framed photographs, and the faint scent of cologne that I now recognized all too well. This was no guest room. It was Steven's private room.

I had made a terrible mistake.

"What will he think of me now?" I groaned quietly, pressing my palms against my face. "Why, of all days, did this have to happen today?"

Panic pushed me into motion. I brushed the water from my skin with my hands as quickly as I could before pulling my clothes back on. They were still damp and uncomfortable, but at that moment, I could not have cared less. All I could think was that my boss had seen me with nothing on.

I squeezed my eyes shut. This cannot be happening.

I stood there for a long while, trying to gather what remained of my dignity. Eventually, I realized I could not hide in his room forever. I smoothed my hair, straightened my clothes, and took a slow, steady breath. Then I opened the door.

My eyes stayed fixed on the floor.

Steven was standing right in front of me with his arms folded across his chest. He did not move aside. He simply looked at me, his gaze steady and unreadable.

The silence was unbearable, and I was just about to apologize when he finally spoke.

"Are you trying to seduce me?"

My head snapped up. Of all the things I had imagined he might say, that was not one of them. My mind went blank, and the apology I had rehearsed so carefully dissolved on my tongue.

I opened my mouth to speak, but the words broke off before they could form.

I was stunned as the woman continued. "And what are you still doing here? Are you trying to win my son back?" I stared at her in disbelief. Just then, the younger woman stepped forward. "No, Mother, she is not Natasha." She moved closer to her mother's side. "Have you forgotten what she looks like?" I let out a breath as I realized she had mistaken me for someone else. Steven appeared from the other side of the entrance. "Mother, welcome. This is Emilia, my assistant. Emilia, this is my mother, Mrs. Ivy, and my sister, Miss Sophia." I greeted them warmly and hoped they would be kind to me, especially after Mrs. Ivy had taken me for Natasha. Perhaps it was only her age. I watched as they carried their small bags upstairs, with the maid helping them. Later, I sat at my desk and gazed out of the window, at the right side, as I always did. My elbow rested on the table and my cheek against my palm. This time, I was not thinking about Rui. I was thinking about Steven's words

I held the necklace in my palm. It was definitely my sister's. I recognized the tiny scratch near the clasp. "But why didn't you give it to me sooner?" I asked. Ethan shrugged. "I forgot. Honestly, I could not tell you why." I studied his face for a moment, then closed my fingers around the chain. "Thank you. This means a great deal to my family." When I finally got home, I found Mia and placed the necklace in her hands. "Keep it safe," I told her. She nodded and held it close. I let the matter rest, though a quiet doubt lingered at the back of my mind. The next morning, I was standing in front of Steven's desk because he had called me in. I expected another task, another schedule change, another demand. It was something else entirely. "I heard about what happened before your marriage ended," he said. "I know I should not listen to other people's personal lives, but I think I should say this. Honestly, when I..." He paused and adjusted his tie, as though the words had caug

The words Steven had spoken echoed in my ears, and my eyes watered until the room blurred. Or are you the kind of assistant who believes she can get her way with her boss? My eyes moved restlessly across his face, searching for any sign that he regretted it. I stepped back, ready to leave, but Steven suddenly rushed toward me. "Damn it, I am so sorry. I did not mean it." I tried to break free, but he held on to my hands. When I turned my face away, he gently drew my attention back to him, pressing my hands together between his own. "I am truly sorry, Emilia. Please." It was astonishing. The man who had spoken so cruelly only moments ago was now pleading with me. "How could you?" I looked straight into his eyes. "Do you think that because I work for you, I am cheap? You are unbelievable." He did not let go, even when I pulled harder. "I was angry," he said quietly. "I had just realized that Natasha only ever loved me for my money. That is not an excuse. I know it is not

Ethan's eyes were hungry as he stared at me. He had no twin, and I was certain it was really him standing in front of me. "Stop it." I pushed his hand away, but he only stepped closer. Ethan had been my friend for more than twenty years, and I had never expected this from him. "I have always liked you," he said. "You are more than a friend to me. I was afraid to say it, but you don't have to be afraid of me." I backed away until my shoulders touched the door. My ears had heard the words, but my mind refused to accept them. Then, without warning, Ethan sank to the floor and knelt there with his head bowed, as though he were thinking. Was he telling the truth? I asked myself. I could not leave him like that, so I crouched down to help him up. That was when I noticed something was off. A sharp smell of alcohol reached my nose. I looked around the room and saw an open bottle on the edge of the table. He was drunk. I helped him to the sofa and stayed beside him until he fin

I sent a message to the unknown number. I wrote whatever came to mind, one thought after another, but there was no reply. The next morning, I went to work anyway. I walked into Steven's office already rehearsing my explanation, but I never got the chance to deliver it. Steven was already waiting when I walked in. He looked up, and his gaze sharpened. "Where is your phone?" he asked. "You haven't been picking up your calls." I hesitated. Without meaning to, I clasped my hands in front of me, as though that small barrier could shield me from his temper. "I lost it, sir. Last night. I promise I will replace it today after work." He studied me for a long moment, then leaned closer. I had been careful not to look at him; I did not trust my eyes . But when I finally glanced up, I found him watching them, unblinking, as if the truth might be written there. "Are you sure?" "Yes." He straightened and said, "Come with me." "Where are we going, sir?" "Just come. You will kn

  • PHENOMENAL: After Everything    Chapter 17:You Should Have Let Go

I was sitting outside on a wooden chair, a cup of coffee warming my hands, I felt peaceful. I took a slow sip and let my eyes wander over the garden. I had the whole day to myself. It felt like finally remembering how to breathe. On the other end of the chair, I found a small bag of seeds. I scattered a handful on the ground and watched two birds hop closer to eat. They stayed side by side, so close their wings almost touched. "Lovebirds," I whispered, and I smiled. I remembered something my mother used to say: when you accidentally see two creatures close together, eating or even mating, it means your own match is near. I laughed softly at the thought. Then a hand touched my shoulder. "Wow, two birds," my mother said, leaning over me. "They must be a male and a female." I looked back at them. They had moved even closer and were gently rubbing their necks together. My mother smiled knowingly at me, and I shook my head, though my cheeks felt warm. The peace did not last.
