Ethan's eyes were hungry as he stared at me. He had no twin, and I was certain it was really him standing in front of me.

"Stop it." I pushed his hand away, but he only stepped closer. Ethan had been my friend for more than twenty years, and I had never expected this from him.

"I have always liked you," he said. "You are more than a friend to me. I was afraid to say it, but you don't have to be afraid of me."

I backed away until my shoulders touched the door. My ears had heard the words, but my mind refused to accept them.

Then, without warning, Ethan sank to the floor and knelt there with his head bowed, as though he were thinking.

Was he telling the truth? I asked myself.

I could not leave him like that, so I crouched down to help him up. That was when I noticed something was off. A sharp smell of alcohol reached my nose. I looked around the room and saw an open bottle on the edge of the table.

He was drunk.

I helped him to the sofa and stayed beside him until he finally fell asleep. Even then, what he had said kept circling in my head. I settled into the armchair and tried to convince myself that the alcohol was the reason. Drunk people said foolish things all the time.

The next morning, I woke to find Ethan pacing from one end of the room to the other. He did not notice that I was awake until I called his name.

He hurried over, one hand pressed against his forehead. "I'm sorry. Do you remember what I said last night? Can you tell me? Damn it." He looked down at the floor.

"You didn't mean it, right?"

"No," he answered quickly. "Not at all. I thought you were someone else, a girl I used to have a crush on back then."

That was his explanation.

I noticed that he had not said my name last night when he said those words. So I let it go. Perhaps he was telling the truth, and if Ethan had truly liked me all those years, he would have said something long ago. We were practically siblings.

"It's okay," I told him. "I believe you. But promise me you won't get drunk like that again."

He promised, and I wanted to believe him.

I left soon afterward and drove toward the office, taking the road slowly. My mind was still crowded with the events of the night before. Then, without warning, a woman leapt in front of my car, and I slammed on the brakes.

It was Natasha.

She wore towering heels and a flashy outfit that caught the morning light. She marched toward my window as if she owned the road.

If she is going to say something unpleasant, I should just keep driving, I thought, and I fixed my eyes on the steering wheel.

"Hi, Emilia," she said, smiling sweetly. "My fiancé's assistant. I need you to pass a message to him. He is angry with me right now, so would you please give him this?" She held out an envelope.

I only stared at her.

"And if you can, please plead for me," she added. "We will definitely get back together. He is just upset, that's all."

I knew Natasha had never been kind to me. Still, something in her voice made me hesitate, and before I could stop myself, I took the envelope.

"Okay," I said. "I will give it to him."

Then I drove away.

Steven was out for most of the day. He had back-to-back meetings, and I did not see him until I was about to leave. He walked in tugging at his tie as though it were choking him.

I stepped forward and handed him the envelope. "Natasha asked me to give you this."

"Oh, really?" He turned it over, looking at the front, then the back. I thought he might open it. Instead, he crushed it in his fist, his expression hard.

"Next time, do not accept anything from her. I am sure you know what happened between us."

"Yes, sir. May I just ask you something? You could have just taken a look."

"Are you going to tell me what to do now?"

He started toward me. With every step he took, I found myself retreating another step.

"Tell me, how much did she pay you? Do you interfere in other people's affairs?"

"No, sir. I was only trying to..." I tried to explain, but the words would not come. Natasha had never been kind to me, and I could not understand why I had agreed to carry her message. Perhaps, when I saw Steven's pain the other day, her pleading had settled somewhere inside me.

Steven did not give me the chance to speak. I wondered whether this was the same man from yesterday.

"Or are you the kind of assistant who believes she can get her way with her boss?" he asked.

I was stunned as the woman continued. "And what are you still doing here? Are you trying to win my son back?" I stared at her in disbelief. Just then, the younger woman stepped forward. "No, Mother, she is not Natasha." She moved closer to her mother's side. "Have you forgotten what she looks like?" I let out a breath as I realized she had mistaken me for someone else. Steven appeared from the other side of the entrance. "Mother, welcome. This is Emilia, my assistant. Emilia, this is my mother, Mrs. Ivy, and my sister, Miss Sophia." I greeted them warmly and hoped they would be kind to me, especially after Mrs. Ivy had taken me for Natasha. Perhaps it was only her age. I watched as they carried their small bags upstairs, with the maid helping them. Later, I sat at my desk and gazed out of the window, at the right side, as I always did. My elbow rested on the table and my cheek against my palm. This time, I was not thinking about Rui. I was thinking about Steven's words

I held the necklace in my palm. It was definitely my sister's. I recognized the tiny scratch near the clasp. "But why didn't you give it to me sooner?" I asked. Ethan shrugged. "I forgot. Honestly, I could not tell you why." I studied his face for a moment, then closed my fingers around the chain. "Thank you. This means a great deal to my family." When I finally got home, I found Mia and placed the necklace in her hands. "Keep it safe," I told her. She nodded and held it close. I let the matter rest, though a quiet doubt lingered at the back of my mind. The next morning, I was standing in front of Steven's desk because he had called me in. I expected another task, another schedule change, another demand. It was something else entirely. "I heard about what happened before your marriage ended," he said. "I know I should not listen to other people's personal lives, but I think I should say this. Honestly, when I..." He paused and adjusted his tie, as though the words had caug

The words Steven had spoken echoed in my ears, and my eyes watered until the room blurred. Or are you the kind of assistant who believes she can get her way with her boss? My eyes moved restlessly across his face, searching for any sign that he regretted it. I stepped back, ready to leave, but Steven suddenly rushed toward me. "Damn it, I am so sorry. I did not mean it." I tried to break free, but he held on to my hands. When I turned my face away, he gently drew my attention back to him, pressing my hands together between his own. "I am truly sorry, Emilia. Please." It was astonishing. The man who had spoken so cruelly only moments ago was now pleading with me. "How could you?" I looked straight into his eyes. "Do you think that because I work for you, I am cheap? You are unbelievable." He did not let go, even when I pulled harder. "I was angry," he said quietly. "I had just realized that Natasha only ever loved me for my money. That is not an excuse. I know it is not

I sent a message to the unknown number. I wrote whatever came to mind, one thought after another, but there was no reply. The next morning, I went to work anyway. I walked into Steven's office already rehearsing my explanation, but I never got the chance to deliver it. Steven was already waiting when I walked in. He looked up, and his gaze sharpened. "Where is your phone?" he asked. "You haven't been picking up your calls." I hesitated. Without meaning to, I clasped my hands in front of me, as though that small barrier could shield me from his temper. "I lost it, sir. Last night. I promise I will replace it today after work." He studied me for a long moment, then leaned closer. I had been careful not to look at him; I did not trust my eyes . But when I finally glanced up, I found him watching them, unblinking, as if the truth might be written there. "Are you sure?" "Yes." He straightened and said, "Come with me." "Where are we going, sir?" "Just come. You will kn

I was sitting outside on a wooden chair, a cup of coffee warming my hands, I felt peaceful. I took a slow sip and let my eyes wander over the garden. I had the whole day to myself. It felt like finally remembering how to breathe. On the other end of the chair, I found a small bag of seeds. I scattered a handful on the ground and watched two birds hop closer to eat. They stayed side by side, so close their wings almost touched. "Lovebirds," I whispered, and I smiled. I remembered something my mother used to say: when you accidentally see two creatures close together, eating or even mating, it means your own match is near. I laughed softly at the thought. Then a hand touched my shoulder. "Wow, two birds," my mother said, leaning over me. "They must be a male and a female." I looked back at them. They had moved even closer and were gently rubbing their necks together. My mother smiled knowingly at me, and I shook my head, though my cheeks felt warm. The peace did not last.
