I glanced up at the ceiling, searching for the right way to ask him about the necklace. Or perhaps I had simply lost my nerve.

Then he raised his head and looked straight at me. "Are you brave?"

"Yes, sir. Very brave." My palms were damp, but I kept a wide smile on my face.

His eyes moved slowly across my face and then dropped to my chest. Only then did I realize that the top button of my blouse had come undone. Heat flooded my cheeks, and I covered myself at once.

"I wasn't looking at that," he said calmly. "I was thinking."

His words only made me more nervous. I wasn't sure whether he was being honest or simply being polite. "My apologies, sir."

"If you get any of these jobs, you will have to learn to dress properly." He leaned back in his chair. "And here is a question for you." He paused, and the silence stretched just long enough to make my heart pound. "If you didn't do your work well, and I yelled at you, or someone else did, what would you do?"

I had to think twice before answering. It was not the sort of question I had prepared for, yet it was one my life had already answered many times. I kept smiling, though my chest tightened.

"I would try to understand, and I would apologize," I said. "People are going through a lot more than we see." I exhaled slowly as the image of Rui crossed my mind. "So it's normal. I would take no offense, and I would try to avoid the same mistake next time."

He studied me for a moment longer, his expression unreadable. Then he gave a small nod and dismissed me.

It was only after I had left the building that I realized I had forgotten to mention the necklace. A minute earlier it had consumed my thoughts, and now it had vanished from my mind entirely. Perhaps I had lost it the first time I came to collect a file from the other office. But when I asked the secretary, he told me he hadn't seen it.

I whispered a quick prayer that I would be offered one of the jobs. It was getting late, and I had somewhere else to be. In less than an hour, I would sit down to sign my divorce papers. After months of silence and distance, I would finally give Rui what he wanted.

I did not bring a lawyer. I could not afford one, and I had no idea how I would pay if I needed one later. So I read a few headings, skimmed the rest, and signed.

"Done."

I set the pen down and looked Rui directly in the eye. I wanted him to see that I wasn't weak, and that I was agreeing to this on my own terms, not because he had broken me.

The lawyer cleared his throat and turned to Rui. "We should have the money for the loan payment now."

Rui shifted in his seat. "It isn't with me at the moment, but I promise she will get it today."

Something inside me snapped. "Damn it, Rui! You said you would give it to me by now!"

The lawyer raised a hand to calm me. "Madam, please. You will receive it this evening, no matter what."

I swallowed my anger, but it burned in my throat. Eight years of marriage, and I still had to beg for what was mine.

"And what is your reason for divorcing me?" I asked, my voice low and steady. "Give me one reasonable reason."

Rui did not answer immediately. Instead, he pulled out his phone, tapped the screen, and held it close to my face.

"Listen."

It was a recording. At first there was only static, and then I heard it: two people moaning, the sound sharp and unmistakable in the quiet room.

"Ahh... Move faster."

My stomach turned over. I stared at him, stunned. Was he really going to lie to my face now, after everything?

"What? That isn't me."

"It is clearly your voice, Emilia," he said coldly. "You slept with someone else, and all this time you were accusing me of cheating. Who was it? Ethan?"

The name struck me like a slap. Ethan was my friend, nothing more, and Rui knew it.

"What?" I cried, and my voice cracked with pain. "Stop making up stories!"

Before I could say another word, the lawyer cut in sharply. "No one is allowed to call anyone names. We are done here. You may both go your separate ways."

"You planned this." I pointed at Rui, my hand trembling. Then I turned to the lawyer. "You know you can't simply accuse me like this. It's only a recording! Anyone could have edited it."

My throat tightened as the pain settled deeper. I looked from one man to the other, and a terrible suspicion took hold of me. Rui must have paid him. The lawyer had never been neutral. He had been part of this from the start.

Rui did not even flinch. He simply pressed play again, and the same sound filled the room.

"It's your voice," he said.

I stared at my mother and placed my hands on her shoulders. "Mother, you don't have to read those." She moved back a little, her eyes filling with worry. "Is this what you went through while you were staying with Rui? These are things you should never have to endure, no matter what." "I know that now, I didn't realize how far it had gone until it was already too late." "Emilia, why did you put up with all of this?" She placed a trembling hand on my head, and I could see the disappointment in her face. "Mom, please. It's nothing now. I only did all that because I loved him, but not anymore." I tried to convince her not to dwell on it. Eventually, I let the subject drop, though the pain of those papers lingered in the room long after we stopped speaking. The next morning, I went to work as usual, but this time I found myself spending more time with my boss. He had ordered me to accompany him to the shopping mall, and I was surprised by how relaxed the trip felt. "Let's see how th

"Here you are."The words came from behind me, followed by slow, mocking claps. I stopped with my hand on the gate, my body stiffening before my mind caught up. I knew that voice. I had listened to it for eight years. When I turned, Rui was standing a few steps away, his hands still moving together, a thin smile on his face."Please, Rui," I said. "Not today. Not here."I turned to leave, but he caught my arm and lifted it above my head, as if I were a thief he had caught in the act. Then he shoved me away. I stumbled back, my wrist throbbing where his fingers had dug in."You have the nerve to tie my father to a bed?" he said. "How dare you, after the extra fifty thousand dollars I gave you?"The words hurt more than the shove.Fifty thousand dollars. That was the price he had put on eight years of my life; the dreams I put aside, the nights I waited up for him, the insults I swallowed to keep our home together. I searched his eyes for any trace of guilt or worry and found none. H

"Mom, it isn't what you think," I said, my voice unsteady. "I didn't put on that dress willingly. It's complicated, but you have nothing to worry about." "Don't tell me you went to see Rui," Mia cut in. I stared at her. She had the audacity to say that after hiding the fact that Rui had been asking her out. My chest tightened. "What?" I said. "I'm only being concerned." "What?" Mia kept pushing, question after question, until my patience finally snapped. "Why did you keep it from me that Rui asked you out? Why, Mia?" Shock washed over my mother's face. Her lips parted, but no sound came out at first. "You wouldn't have believed me," Mia said quietly. "And I thought you would have learned to listen by now." "How could you say that?" I whispered. The words stung more than I wanted to admit. Mia twisted her fingers together and looked away, unable to meet my eyes. "Enough!" my mother cried from behind us. The room fell silent. I was upset with Mia for the scene

I tore myself away from the bed, and the relief that rushed through me was so sharp it almost hurt. Behind me, Gerald was begging. I pretended not to hear him. My hands trembled as I snatched up the briefcase and pulled it open. The cash was still there, clean and untouched. I stared at it, my chest tightening. It was my own money, and he had tried to turn it into a price for my body. The thought made me feel sick. "Emilia, you can't just leave me here," Gerald said, scrambling off the bed. "I'll talk to Rui. I'll make him take you back." When I didn't answer, his voice sharpened. "Stop playing deaf. I mean what I said." Something inside me snapped. I turned to face him, and my voice came out steadier than I felt. "Rui has already made his decision, and I don't need your help. Did you hear yourself? You want me to give you something in return for my own money." His face twisted, and he began to shout. I didn't wait to hear what he said. There was no time to change, so I ra

I wanted to call Clara or Ethan for help, but I didn't want to disturb them. They had problems of their own, and for once I needed to handle something by myself. If Gerald planned to play games with me, he would get exactly what he deserved. I stopped in front of room 442 and knocked. The door opened almost immediately. Gerald, stood there in a black coat, looking far too pleased with himself. He stepped aside and gestured for me to enter, but I stayed where I was. "Come in," he said. "I didn't come here to play games," I replied, holding my voice steady. "Just give me what I came for." "Not if you stay out there. I can't hand you the briefcase in the corridor." He smiled. "I mean no harm, Emilia." I didn't believe him for a second, but I walked in anyway. Behind me, the lock clicked, and the sound ran down my spine like cold water. When I looked at him again, his expression had changed. His eyes crawled over me, slow and hungry, and I understood exactly what he had want

  • PHENOMENAL: After Everything    Chapter 5: Room 422

I turned toward Rui, my hands trembling as I pointed straight at him. "You planned this." Then I faced the lawyer, my voice shaking with disbelief. "You know perfectly well you can't accuse me like this. It's only a recording. Anyone could have edited it, or created something like it from scratch." My throat tightened as the pain settled deeper inside me. I couldn't shake the feeling that Rui had planned everything from the very beginning. Perhaps he had even paid the lawyer to help carry out his scheme. Rui, however, showed no sign of concern. He simply clicked the recording again, and the same voice filled the room. Then he looked directly into my eyes. "Listen carefully, Emilia. It's your voice." I knew then that there was nothing more to say. I could not control what Rui chose to believe, and if he had already decided against me, no argument would change his mind. So I picked up my bag and walked out without looking back. As the door closed behind me, I could hear the murm
