The Scent I Was Never Supposed to Want

Arlo

Morning light filtered through the penthouse windows. I stood by the kitchen island, sipping black coffee. It did little to clear the fog from last night’s heat.

My body ached in dull waves. The suppressants had blunted the worst of it, but every brush of clothing reminded me how fragile my new Omega body was.

School can’t wait, whether I felt like facing the world or not. voss heirs didn’t get sick days, the family name demanded excellence.

Raphael had stayed until dawn, the bastard had worked on his laptop in the armchair while I drifted in and out of restless sleep. Now he was back. He leaned against the counter in a fresh charcoal suit that screamed power. His hair was perfect, jaw clean-shaven, but those storm-gray eyes watched me with the same intensity.

“Parents are still in Europe for another month,” he said without warning. Keys dangled from his fingers. “I’m dropping you off. Move.”

I set my mug down harder than necessary. “I can drive myself. I’m not a child.”

“You can barely stand straight.” His gaze flicked over me, noting my pale face and the way I shifted my weight. “Don’t argue. Car’s waiting.”

The elevator ride down was silent. The air felt thick with our mingled scents. In the garage, Raphael’s sleek black Aston Martin purred to life. I slid into the passenger seat, arms crossed, and stared out the tinted window. The city streets blurred past. My skin still felt too warm. My thoughts were scattered. The heat had eased, but it left a restless itch I didn’t want to think about.

We were halfway to campus when Raphael broke the silence. “Don’t do anything stupid today. No fucking just anyone because the edge is still there. Show some restraint.”

My head snapped toward him. “What if I don’t?”

His jaw ticked, could see his knuckles turning white on the steering wheel. The car sped up smoothly through traffic, but the tension inside grew tighter. “You’re not a whore, Arlo. This is a little heat compared to what’s coming. And you want to do what — find someone else? As much as you’re becoming an Omega, don’t forget you’re from an Alpha bloodline. Act like it.”

The lecture grated on me. I snorted and turned in my seat to glare at him fully. “Enough with the preaching. Why do you care? You made it clear last night I’m just bad for business. Drop the concerned act.”

Raphael’s lips curved into a smirk. It was cold and infuriatingly attractive. He kept his eyes on the road, but the look sent an unwelcome shiver down my spine. “That’s where you get it all wrong, baby. I don’t.”

“Stop calling me that,” I hissed. Heat flooded my cheeks. The pet name always hit differently. Part insult, part something that made my Omega instincts wake up. I hated it. I hated how easily it rolled off his tongue.

Raphael chuckled low. The sound vibrated through my chest. “Why? Does it bother you?” He pulled up to the university gates.

The campus spread out before us with ivy-covered buildings and students rushing between classes. But he didn’t unlock the doors right away. Instead, he reached over and adjusted the collar of my shirt. His fingers lingered a beat too long against my warm skin. “You reek of last night’s heat. Try not to draw the wrong kind of attention.”

I slapped his hand away. My pulse raced. “I can handle myself. Unlike you, I don’t need to control everything in sight.” I grabbed my bag and shoved the door open. I stepped out into the crisp air. Students nearby glanced at the luxury car and its famous driver. Raphael Voss rarely played chauffeur.

As I turned to slam the door, Raphael leaned across the seat. His voice dropped. “Text me if it gets bad again. And stay away from the east wing lounges. They’re crawling with low-tier Alphas this semester.”

I didn’t answer, I strode toward the main quad with my head high. The car idled behind me for a long moment before it pulled away. I could still feel his eyes on my back. That smirk stayed burned in my memory. The whole interaction left me rattled. Annoyance and that undeniable pull twisted together inside me. Why did Raphael have to be so infuriatingly present? So impossible to ignore?

Classes dragged. My focus kept breaking between lectures and the subtle stares from classmates who knew about my shift. Whispers followed me through the halls. By midday, the lingering heat effects made it hard to concentrate. I skipped the cafeteria and found a quiet bench under a cluster of trees to review my notes.

That was when my phone buzzed.

Unknown number: Heard you’re riding solo through your cycles now. My place is free tonight. 98% match, just like the big brother prefers. Let me help.

I stared at the screen. My jaw tightened. Before I could delete it, another message came.

Don’t pretend you’re above it, Voss. Everyone knows what Omegas need.

My stomach twisted. The words sounded too much like Raphael’s warnings. I deleted the thread, but the unease stayed with me. Who was this? And how did they know about Raphael’s involvement?

I shoved the phone into my pocket and headed to my next class. My shoulders stayed tense, the campus suddenly felt smaller. Eyes seemed to watch me everywhere. As I crossed the central courtyard, a familiar black Aston Martin caught my eye. It was parked illegally near the admin building. Raphael stood beside it, talking to one of the deans. His expression was unreadable.

What was he still doing here?

My steps faltered. Before I could change direction, Raphael’s gaze locked onto me across the distance. The smirk was gone, smething sharper and more dangerous replaced it.

Then my phone buzzed again. This time it was Raphael.

Don’t even think about replying to strays. We need to talk. Now.

My blood ran hot. How did he —?

A sharp scent hit me from behind. Another Alpha.

He stepped too close on the path. “Hey, Voss. You look like you could use some real company after all.”

My heat-flushed skin prickled with warning as the stranger’s hand brushed my arm.

  • PREGNANT AFTER MY STEP BROTHER KNOTTED ME   Quiet

ElaraTwo days after Reyna's arrest, my mother suggested something that felt almost absurd given everything we'd just lived through."Go somewhere," she said, setting a mug of tea in front of me at the kitchen table. "Both of you. Not to solve anything. Not to investigate anything. Just go somewhere and be normal for an afternoon.""Normal," I repeated, like the word belonged to a language I'd forgotten how to speak."You've spent a month being a detective, a witness, a headline, and a hostage to your own phone." She sat down across from me, tired eyes softer than they'd been in weeks. "I think you've earned a few hours of just being eighteen."I texted Kael before I'd even finished my tea, and by early afternoon we were sitting on a blanket at the edge of the lake outside town, the same lake his family used to take him to as a kid, before company retreats and boardrooms replaced anything resembling a childhood."This feels strange," Kael admitted, stretching out beside me, sunlight c

  • PREGNANT AFTER MY STEP BROTHER KNOTTED ME   The Meeting

KaelThe morning of Kane's meeting with prosecutors arrived gray and overcast, the kind of sky that made the whole city look like it was holding its breath along with the rest of us.None of us had really slept. I dozed for maybe an hour on Elara's couch sometime after three, waking every time my phone buzzed with a notification that turned out to be nothing important, my body too wired to let me rest properly even when my mind was exhausted enough to beg for it.By seven, everyone was back at the kitchen table, the same table that had hosted more of these conversations over the last month than I ever could have imagined a single piece of furniture surviving."Diego's source said the meeting starts at nine," I said, checking my phone again out of habit more than necessity. "We probably won't hear anything concrete until at least noon, maybe later depending on how long they spend going through the recordings.""Five hours of waiting," Elara said, wrapping both hands around a mug of cof

  • PREGNANT AFTER MY STEP BROTHER KNOTTED ME   What Kane Knew

ElaraTomorrow felt too far away and much too close at the same time.We spent the hours before Kane's meeting with prosecutors doing what we could, which mostly meant waiting, the same exhausting waiting that had defined this entire month. Diego kept digging. My father sat with Mom going through the other six names in Reyna's folder, cross referencing them against public records, trying to find anyone still local enough to reach.Kael barely sat still the whole day."You should sleep," I told him around midnight, finding him still at the kitchen table scrolling through Diego's timeline for what had to be the tenth time."I can't. Not until we know what he actually tells them tomorrow." He rubbed both hands over his face, exhaustion carved deep into every line of him. "If he confirms she was running things, this becomes real in a way it hasn't been yet. Official. My father's going to have to answer for trusting her this long, and I'm going to have to figure out what that means for the

  • PREGNANT AFTER MY STEP BROTHER KNOTTED ME   Six Months Ago

KaelNone of us slept that night. By six in the morning, Diego had pulled everything he could find on the timeline, and we were back around the kitchen table with fresh coffee and the same exhausted dread from hours earlier."Walk me through it again," I said. "Slowly this time."Diego shared his screen through the laptop, a timeline stretched across it, dates and transfers laid out in careful order. "Six months ago, Reyna opened two new accounts overseas. Small deposits at first, nothing that would trip alarms. Around the same time, she starts increasing contact with Doyle, based on communication records I managed to pull.""Doyle was already working for her by then," I said slowly. "Before any of this with Elara even started.""Looks that way." Diego zoomed in on a specific date. "Four months ago, right before Elara's heat cycle apparently shifted early, there's a transfer to a pharmaceutical research contact. Someone specializing in suppressant formulations."My stomach turned. "Ar

  • PREGNANT AFTER MY STEP BROTHER KNOTTED ME   The Other Names

ElaraWe spread the folder's contents across my kitchen table at midnight, all five of us now, my father included, nobody willing to wait until morning to see exactly what Kael and my mother had pulled out of that house."There's seven names," my father said, sorting through the documents with the careful attention of someone who used to do this professionally, back before his own life got buried the same way. "Seven separate cases, going back almost fifteen years.""All connected to the Voss company," Kael said, reading over his shoulder. "All handled the same way. Money moving, records disappearing, and Reyna's signature on every single authorization."I picked up one of the folders, a name I didn't recognize, a woman named Priya Anand, dates going back nine years. "Who's this?""Former employee," my father said, scanning the attached documents. "Filed a complaint about safety violations at one of the manufacturing plants. The complaint disappeared. She left the company a month late

  • PREGNANT AFTER MY STEP BROTHER KNOTTED ME   Inside

KaelThe side door off the kitchen was unlocked, the way it always had been, Reyna never bothered with extra security because she'd spent her whole career making sure other people needed it more than she did.I eased it open slowly, Elara's mother right behind me, both of us listening for any sound over the hum of the refrigerator inside."Study this way," I whispered, leading her down a hallway I could have walked blind, past photos of holidays I'd forgotten and some I hadn't, Reyna smiling in every single one like she'd never once considered any of it might come apart. The study door was closed but not locked. I eased it open and flipped on my phone's flashlight instead of the overhead light, keeping the beam low."Diego," I said quietly into the phone, still connected to the speaker with the volume turned down. "We're in. What am I looking for.""Filing cabinets, a safe, anything locked that seems out of place for a home office," Diego said. "Financial documents specifically. Bank
