ARIA POV

"Ding!" The doorbell rang

For a moment, I didn’t move–didn’t blink.

Quinn, on the other hand, was already on his feet.

"I'll get it," he said quickly, a childish eagerness creeping into his voice.

I wasn't ready to witness another dramatic reunion but I guess I had to anyways.

"Of course." I answered.

Two days.

That’s how short it had taken for this moment to arrive. Two days since Quinn had informed me—rather casually—that Zachary and Athena would be visiting. Two days of restless sleep and pretending that my heart didn’t clench every time I remembered him

I stood still, forcing myself to appear composed.

The door swung open.

"Quinn!" Athena’s voice rang out.

She pulled him into a tight embrace, her hands clutching his shoulders like she hadn't seen him since forever.

"My boy," she murmured. "You've lost weight."

Quinn chuckled. "Mum, I just saw you two months ago."

"And that means I can't worry?" she snapped, pulling back to scan him from head to toe. “Are you eating properly?”

"She hasn't changed a bit." I thought. Heavy makeup, always on heals and false nails. Trying to go back to the youthful days she can never be opportuned to go back to.

I swallowed.

Zachary stood just behind her, hands in his pockets, posture relaxed. When his eyes lifted and met mine, time seemed to freeze.

He smiled. Not a polite smile. Not a casual one.

A flirty smile—the same one that had made me an expectant mother.

I looked away immediately, my jaw tightening.

"Don’t."

"Don't look at him, don't react." I warned myself.

I hadn’t realized how much I had missed his presence until it stood right in front of me, breathing the same air.

"Get a grip, Aria." I told myself.

The man I had chosen over my husband.

I stole another glance before I could stop myself.

He looked… simple. No effort. No pretense. Just Zachary. And somehow, that made him more dangerous. More captivating.

"Great genes," I thought bitterly. "My child would definitely inherit his face."

Just not his beastly character.

"Mum," Quinn said warmly. It's so nice to have you here."

Athena smiled wider at that, clearly pleased.

That was my cue to greet.

I stepped forward. "Hi, Mum—"

She cut me off instantly.

"I'm not your mum,"Athena said sharply, her smile vanishing. it's just Athena. Get that straight."

She brushed past me like I wasn’t even there, heels clicking against floor as she entered the house.

I stood frozen, humiliation washed me.

Quinn didn’t say a word.

Not a single one.

I clenched my fists.

Three years.

Three years of marriage, and I had grown accustomed to this treatment. Athena never liked me, never hid it either. And Quinn—sweet, loyal Quinn—never once defended me.

A typical mum’s boy.

"Bring her bags in,"I said to Ian, our chief driver, breaking the silence.

"Yes, ma'am," he replied, quickly moving to comply.

"Take them upstairs." Quinn added.

We all gathered around the dining table soon after. The maids served the food. Chateau

Athena looked around, unimpressed. "A lot has changed about this house."

"This house,"she began, clicking her tongue, "lacks vibes, Quinn."

Quinn frowned slightly. "What about it?"

"The paintings?" he continued,. "Aria worked hard on the color combination."

His eyes didn't move towards me just for once.

Athena waved her hand dismissively. "That's not what I meant."

"Then what did you mean?" Quinn asked.

"The house isn’t lively,"she replied , scanning the room as if searching for faults. "It feels… empty."

I resisted the urge to laugh.

"Funny," I thought. "Because that’s exactly how this marriage feels." A marriage where the mother decides what goes on in her son's life.

Zachary cleared his throat, breaking the silence.

"I think the house is lovely," he said calmly. "No flaws. Minimal maids. Clean. Peaceful."

Quinn shot him a warning glare.

One thing about Zachary that amazes me, is the way he uses one word to describe things when with other people, but funny how he could be a chatterbox when I was around.

"No one asked for your opinion," Quinn snapped. "This is a family discussion, and you're not included. Eat in peace."

Zachary leaned back slightly, unfazed, though I noticed the tightening of his jaw yet composed.

Athena smirked.

"And the kids?"she continued speaking with disdain. "No one to say, 'Granny, we missed you.'"

She turned sharply toward Quinn.

"It's high time you divorced and took another wife instead of staying with this barren woman."

The words didn't hit deep, it would have, if she came weeks ago but not any longer, I wasn't who she mirrored me, I was more, an expectant mother and because of people like her I was willing to keep the baby and disappoint her.

"There we go again,"I muttered under my breath.

Athena scoffed. "You sure have got some guts to talk back at me."

"Mum," Quinn said firmly but there was warmth in it not meant to correct or reprimand his mother. "A new wife won’t change anything."

Athena shrugged. "It's the truth. If no one else will tell you, then I will."

"That's enough, Athena," Zachary suddenly said, banging his fist on the table.

"Silence isn't weakness. It's withdrawal from acting foolish." Zachary added. I saw Athena's face change, she tightened the grip on her cutlery.

Fury was the word for it.

That simple action, I felt overwhelmed with love, tears clouded my eyes, happy that someone I love was defending me.

"Break it...looks like you learnt carpentry." I murmured under my breath, Zachary chuckled.

"In whose house, huh?" Quinn stood abruptly, his eyes blazed with anger as he stared at Zachary.

"Sit dow, Quinn." I urged trying to ease the tension.

"As who exactly?" he continued harshly. "My best friend who fucked my mother behind my back, or my new stepfather?"

The room became silent that even slow breathes could be heard

No one spoke. Not Athena. Not Zachary. Not even the maids dared to utter a word.

  • PREGNANT FOR MY HUSBAND'S STEPFATHER   Chapter 23

Zachary I sat with Athena and Aria in the living room, our eyes fixed on the television. It was a weekend, if Athena weren’t here, Aria would have been curled up in my arms.I checked the wall clock again and again. The time crept by. I had no plans to leave the room, though. They had found me here and joined without invitation, so I stayed put. News segments rolled on, one after another. I rarely followed headlines unless they touched business, but today the updates kept my attention. Then one report stood out amongst it all.“Movie star Quinn Valdez seen getting intimate with upcoming actress Cassandra Louis,” the anchor said, images flashing across the screen. My gaze flicked to Aria. Her face stayed blank, like the news meant nothing to her. I watched her closely, waiting for any shift in her expression.“Finally, my son has found someone who will bring home my grandchild,” Athena said, her voice full of mockery as she broke the silence “No one asked you,” Aria shot back.I h

AriaI waited for Zachary the way I always did, most times I didn't even need to wait, I kept glancing at the clock over and over again.Time went by. The sun set and yet there was no sign of him. By evening, I couldn't sit still anymore, loneliness was killing me. I pushed aside the book I had intended to read, stood up, and started walking all around the mansion. I moved from one hallway to another, hoping I would turn to a corner and find him there.I kept away from two places. One, the room he and his wife shared, I had no reason to be there. Two, the maid quarters, he won't even near their door.Instead I listened to any sound that might lead me to him. Suddenly, I heard a sound, more of a cutlery making contact with a plate. My heart lifted a little. Maybe it was him. I headed that way, quickening my pace. When I stepped inside, disappointment hit me hard. Athena stood there, not Zachary. Of all the people in this house, she was second on the list of those I least wanted to see.

  • PREGNANT FOR MY HUSBAND'S STEPFATHER   Chapter 21

Aria I had grown used to Zachary sitting with me in my room while I worked. He never asked why I started working from home. He simply stayed close, offering quiet support in his own way, the way he knew best. His presence was helpful, sometimes he gave insights, sometimes encouragements and sometimes he even helped with paper works.Zachary's comment about the change in my physical appearance lingered in my mind, bit by bit my secret was getting close to being uncovered but I wouldn't let that happen unless I permit it. Even though I also noticed the slight changes, my breast was now fuller than the previous, my snatched tummy would soon be close to a pot belly sooner or later. Each day that passed on was a reminder of the limited time I had to sort things.Sort things."Back to earth." Zachary waved his hand in front of my face, snapping me out of my thoughts.I blinked and straightened up. "What?""What was the last thing I said?" he asked, leaning forward with a small smile.I lau

Aria"No," I shouted almost immediately. My heart raced fast as I stared at Zach, refusing to slow down even for a second. He leaned back a bit, smiling lightly. "Yeah, you don't need to be so worked up though." He remained calm, unmoved like it was no big deal.I crossed my arms and looked away for a moment. "Thanks for the food.""You didn't even eat it," he pointed out, glancing at the tray still sitting on the bedside table."I tried to," I muttered, feeling a bit guilty but not enough to change my mind cause if I dared to do, the vomit would be more than the usual.Zach looked at me with worry in his eyes."Do you want to go to the hospital?""It's nothing serious, Zach," I said softly, reaching out to touch his arm. I didn't want him stressing over me. Not when I could handle this myself enough to prevent my secret from getting revealed. He sighed but didn't push it. Instead, I gave him my best pleading look. "May I have ice cream?"Zach shook his head slowly. "It's been junks a

AriaMy body was changing in ways I couldn't ignore anymore. Eggs and pasta which used to be my go to meal at any time of the day, now turned my stomach. The smallest things set me off. Anger became a part of me that even when I tried to hold it back, it can't be held back. Everyone around me noticed the shift. The maids now spoke carefully, tiptoeing around me as if one wrong word would make me explode. I hated the effect pregnancy had on me.The vomiting grew worse too. One small inconvenience and I would rush to the toilet, throwing up uncontrollably like a broken tap water. The smell disgusted me even more.I had no choice but to endure it.Kleopatra had called earlier. She stated she came over to discuss the pregnancy result I had asked her to fake, but Zachary’s presence that day stopped her from asking the important questions—like how many weeks to put on the paper.I was relieved she agreed to help. Right now, she was my only real option. The dates on the result had to match

  • PREGNANT FOR MY HUSBAND'S STEPFATHER   Chapter 18

Author POV Kleopatra cleared her throat. She stepped gently into the room, beaming with smiles as if signaling to Aria that she has been caught red-handed. "Greetings." She waved her hands repeatedly. "Oh my God." She jumped around and poked Zachary's shoulder again and again. He tried to shift away from her, but she kept close and gave him no space to pull back. "Sit already," Aria said and pointed to a chair. "Yes, I should." Kleopatra placed her bag softly on the table and sat down. "It's been a while," she said and turned to look at Zachary who sat beside her. "We saw each other a few months ago, remember?" Zachary answered. "It's not like before." Kleopatra whined. "Agreed. We're no longer teens." Zachary concluded. "We're no longer four too." Kleopatra added. The whole room went silent. "Guys, that's enough," Aria said. "Life happens," Zachary said after he thought for a long time. "I have missed us," Kleopatra said to both of them. Aria closed her
