(Lyra’s POV)

“No. No… it can’t be him.”

The air caught in my throat as the car door opened. One foot on the ground, one hand braced against the edge of the van, I stared at the figure stepping out like a living nightmare.

Rhys.

I stumbled backward, almost losing my balance. Panic surged through me like lightning—cold, fast, and blinding.

Elridge caught me just in time. “Lyra? What’s wrong?”

My lips parted, but no words came. He was already moving toward us, calm and measured like a predator who’d cornered his prey. I felt my stomach twist, both from fear and the weight of the child inside me.

“We need to leave,” I whispered urgently, clinging to Elridge’s arm. But my body betrayed me—too slow, too heavy. The bump made everything harder.

Elridge glanced at him, frowning. “Who is that?”

He looked every inch the tycoon—sharp suit, perfect posture, a face carved from stone—but the chill in his eyes made her flinch.

“My husband,” I murmured, my heart sinking. “And the baby’s father.”

Her lips parted in shock, but before she could speak, he did.

“You’ve made me chase you long enough, Lyra.”

I took a step back and wrapped both arms protectively around my belly. “You shouldn’t be here. I’m not going with you.”

His gaze flicked to my hands. “You think I’d come all this way to ask permission?”

Then, without warning, he grabbed my wrist. His grip was firm, not painful, but the gesture alone made my chest tighten. Elridge immediately stepped in.

“Hey, she’s eight months pregnant! Let go—she could get hurt!”

For a second, Rhys’s hand paused. He looked down at me, at the small swell of my wrist in his palm. Something flickered in his eyes. A brief, uncertain hesitation. Then it vanished.

“You’re coming with me,” he said.

“Not unless you promise you won’t harm the baby,” I said, locking eyes with him, my voice shaking but firm. “I’ll go, but only if he’s safe.”

He narrowed his eyes. “You think you’re in a position to negotiate?”

I swallowed hard, refusing to drop my gaze. “You said the child wasn’t mine to keep. That I didn’t deserve him. But he exists, Rhys. And I will protect him.”

He stared at me for a long, grueling beat. Then his expression turned unreadable.

Elridge leaned close and whispered, “You sure about this?”

I nodded. “It’s time I stopped running.”

The baby shifted inside me, pressing against my ribs as if reacting to the tension. I winced and placed a hand on my belly.

“Lyra?” Elridge asked in alarm.

“Just a kick,” I breathed out. **“He’s fine.” But my voice was tighter now.

Rhys turned, eyes scanning the village around us. The place that had sheltered me for months now seemed too small to hold this moment.

“Get in the car,” he said. “We’re leaving now.”

I paused. There was nothing else to take—except memories.

“Elridge… thank you. For everything.”

She reached out, gripping my hand tightly. “You don’t have to do this alone. If you ever need a way out—again—you call me.”

I nodded, unable to speak through the tightness in my throat.

“Wait—your baby clothes,” she said suddenly, gesturing toward her house. **“You left them—”

“I won’t need them anymore.” I gave her a final look, then turned and climbed into the SUV.

Inside the car, the silence was oppressive. I sat by the window, keeping my body angled away from him. Every part of me was tense.

Then the driver hit a pothole.

The jolt sent me sideways, and I instinctively threw my arms around my belly. I tumbled into Rhys’s side before I could stop myself.

His arm went around me in a reflex, steadying me.

I froze.

He did too.

Our eyes met for half a breath before I pulled away, retreating to the far end of the seat.

The flight to Everwyn felt endless. I couldn’t sleep, but my body betrayed me. Eventually, exhaustion pulled me under, and I drifted into a restless doze on the leather couch across from him.

Even as I slept, my hands stayed curled around my belly. He noticed—I could feel it.

He didn’t speak. But when I woke, there was a blanket draped over me.

I didn’t thank him.

The city skyline came into view through the car window. After six months of rural quiet, the noise and chaos of Everwyn overwhelmed me. I stared out as skyscrapers blurred past, everything familiar yet distant. A version of my life I had tried to leave behind.

By 4:00 PM, we arrived at his villa.

He stepped out first, not even glancing back to see if I could manage. I clutched my lower back and eased myself from the car.

The concrete beneath my feet felt too hard. The house loomed too tall. Every step I took felt heavier than the last.

He turned to me at the front door. His expression unreadable, voice colder than ever.

“You brought this on yourself.”

I stopped walking. “Can we talk?”

His response was immediate and sharp. “I’m not interested in conversations.”

He turned, disappearing inside without waiting for me.

I stood there, on the porch where I once thought I’d find safety… now returned like a prisoner in a gilded cage.

POV: MargaretI stood at the front of the lecture hall, watching thirty-eight young faces stare back at me with varying degrees of attention. Some were genuinely engaged, others were clearly counting down the minutes until they could escape medical ethics and get back to the exciting stuff, surgery techniques, diagnostic procedures, anything that didn't involve prolonged discussions about moral philosophy."Let's talk about intention versus outcome," I said, clicking to the next slide. A case study appeared, carefully anonymized. A doctor who'd used experimental treatment without full authorization. The patient survived. The doctor faced consequences.Three months had passed since Lyra's wedding, three months since I'd watched my daughter marry a good man and felt, for the first time in years, like maybe I'd done something right. The reinstatement to limited medical practice had come through two weeks later. Supervised rounds at the hospital twice a week, and this teaching position at

RhysI stood in front of the mirror, fumbling with my tie for the third time. My hands wouldn't stop shaking."Here, let me." Chris appeared beside me, gently pushing my hands away. He worked the silk with practiced efficiency, the way he'd probably done a thousand times in his former life of corporate espionage. "Breathe, man.""What if I'm not enough?" The words tumbled out before I could stop them. "What if I can't make her happy?"Chris finished the tie and met my eyes in the mirror. "You're not supposed to make her happy. You're supposed to share life with her. Happiness is what you build together."I nodded, but my stomach still twisted with nerves. The door opened and Emma walked in, stunning in her bridesmaid dress, a soft blue that matched the ocean outside. She'd chosen it herself, she'd told Lyra. No more hiding in shadows."You look terrified," she observed, crossing the room."I am terrified."She smiled, reaching up to adjust my collar even though it didn't need adjustin

POV: LyraThe morning sun filtered through my apartment window, catching dust motes in its golden light. Six months. It felt like a lifetime and no time at all.I sat at my desk, laptop open to the news website I checked every morning out of habit. Our names were buried on page seven now—a brief mention that Viktor Kovalenko's trial was entering its fourth month. The prosecution was confident: life in prison, multiple counts, no possibility of parole. The front page had moved on. A political scandal in Washington. A tech merger in Silicon Valley. The world had forgotten us, and God, what a relief that was."Coffee's ready," Rhys called from the kitchen.I smiled. These small domestic moments still caught me off guard. Rhys making coffee in my apartment, our apartment now, technically, though we were moving next month to somewhere that felt like both of ours. A fresh start."Coming," I called back, saving my document. The file name stared at me: ‘When Family Secrets Destroy: A Story of

POV: RhysI stand at the back of the cathedral, watching hundreds of people file in for my grandfather's funeral. Business leaders in expensive suits. Politicians I recognize from the news. Hospital administrators. Research scientists. People whose lives David touched, for better or worse. The cathedral is massive, with stained glass windows casting colored light across the pews. It's the kind of funeral David would have wanted, grand, public, impossible to ignore. But I don't know how to eulogize him. Lyra finds me hiding in the vestibule. "Hey," she says softly. "You okay?""No." I run my hand through my hair. "How do I talk about him? What do I say?""The truth," she says simply."Which truth? That he was a philanthropist who built hospitals? Or that he destroyed families to build his fortune?" My voice rises. "Who was he really, Lyra?"She takes my hand. "Both. He was both."A church official approaches. "Mr. Sterling, it's time."Lyra squeezes my hand. "Tell his whole story. He'd

POV: DavidI wake up knowing something has changed. My chest feels heavy, like someone is pressing down on it with both hands. Each breath is work. The morning light filters through my bedroom curtains, and I think: this might be one of my last mornings. Dr. Patterson confirmed it yesterday. Weeks, maybe days. My heart is giving up. Too much stress. Too much strain. Too many years of building an empire on a foundation of guilt. I reach for my phone and call Rhys."Grandpa? It's six in the morning.""I know." My voice sounds weak, even to me. "Gather everyone. I need the family together. Today.""Are you..""Today, Rhys. Please."He hears something in my voice. "I'll have everyone there by noon."I hang up and look around my bedroom. This house, this estate, I built it all with blood money. But in these final days, it's become something else. A home. That makes it the fourth night in a row I've woken up before dawn.I sit on the edge of my bed, head in my hands, trying to remember that I'm safe. Viktor is in prison. The threat is over. I'm free.
