The next day was Friday, and I was a study in controlled chaos within my own mind. I spent the morning rehearsing conversations that would likely never happen, my thoughts a frantic script of things I wanted to say to Professor Kai. I even jotted down possible replies, my handwriting a nervous scrawl across a page I would later tear up and discard.

It was a futile exercise, but it gave my restless energy a place to go.

I arrived at the lecture hall early, a familiar ritual of seeking solace in my usual spot. But the universe, it seemed, had other plans. My stomach plummeted.
