Chapter 3

作者: Pumpkin Scoop
In Mom's and Dad's minds, favoring Henry had long become second nature.

Hearing my reply, Dad immediately broke into a satisfied smile, as if he had just resolved a huge problem. Mom remained silent, picking at the food on her plate and acting as if nothing was happening. Henry, on the other hand, fiddled with his new watch even more smugly, unable to hide the smile on his face.

I rose from the table and went into the bathroom. I then closed the door and stared at my pale reflection in the mirror.

I had spent 18 years in this family, but I had never truly felt like I belonged. I studied hard and pushed myself to become better, believing that maybe I could earn some attention and some love. I was mistaken, though. I realized now that there were some things that effort alone could never get me.

I overheard Henry talking as soon as I walked out of the bathroom. "Dad, tons of people in my class are going on graduation trips. Zack and his friends are going to the beach, and Anthony's going to Cloudmere. I really want to go on one too, Dad…"

I then heard Dad's gentle, pampering reply. "You should go on a graduation trip if you want to. Your mother can help with the cost, and I'll give you some as well."

"Really? Thanks, Dad!" Henry exclaimed before his expression turned hesitant, as if he had thought of something. "I-It must cost quite a bit of money to go on trips like that, right? Gavin still has to retake his SAT next year, too. Is it going to put too much pressure on the family financially, Dad?"

"You're so considerate, always thinking about the family," Dad said, sounding rather pleased.

"You don't have to worry about the money. We'll just have Gavin get another part-time job. He can take a rest after he retakes the SAT next year. You're the priority right now, so go wherever you want to go. I'll have your back, Henry."

I stood in the dark corner of the hallway, looking at the three of them enjoying each other's company under the warm yellow light.

Dad smiled, which he rarely did, and reached out to ruffle Henry's hair. Mom hugged Henry, her face beaming with pure pride and doting love. Henry leaned into her embrace, smiling like he was the happiest person in the world.

It was such a heartwarming sight, so much so that it was painful for me to look at. I just stood there in the dark, feeling like an outsider crashing their moment.

Unfortunately for them, I wasn't going to pay a single penny toward Henry's trip. I was going to save every bit of money I made from my part-time job. That money would cover my travel and living costs when I finally left this family.

I planned to stay as far away from the three of them as I could moving forward, never returning to their side again.

I woke up the following morning and started working at the courier station that Dad had picked out. I put in eight hours a day, doing the tedious work of scanning parcels over and over for miserable pay.

I didn't want to settle for such low pay, so during my free time, I looked for another part-time job online. I found a tutoring position teaching a middle school student math, physics, and chemistry. I taught for three hours every evening, and the hourly rate was several times higher than my courier job.

I had to juggle two part-time jobs, which meant that I was out early every morning and came home late every night. I hardly had any contact with my family because of that.

I headed out each morning before anyone was awake and dragged myself back late at night when they were already in bed. I saved all my money in a new bank account. I wasn't going to pull out a single dime to help around the house, and I definitely wasn't saving up for Henry's trip or living expenses.

It was nearly 11:00 pm when I returned home one night. It was completely quiet and dark all around, with only Mom and Dad's bedroom still illuminated. I noticed that their bedroom door was slightly ajar, too.

I initially wanted to slip quietly into my room, but I suddenly overheard the conversation coming from their bedroom. I stopped dead in my tracks and heard Mom speaking in a somewhat anxious tone. "You shouldn't have hidden Gavin's admission ticket back then. It's his future on the line, after all."

  • Parents Rigged My Future to Boost My Brother   Chapter 11

I recalled the little boy who used to cry quietly under his blanket. I just wanted to hold him and tell him that it was going to be alright and that everything was behind him. I wanted to let him know that he was wonderful, he deserved good things, and he had finally gotten away from all that unhappiness to start living for himself.I became more accustomed to life in Brightvale as time went by; my grades were steadily improving, and my part-time job was going really well. I slowly built up some savings and no longer had to walk on eggshells around anyone. It went on like that until six months later, when I logged into a social media account I hadn't used in a long time and saw a direct message from Henry. I had blocked him everywhere else, so this was the only way he could reach me.Henry sent me a few super long messages. He wrote that after I moved out, Dad fell seriously ill and spent his days dazed, calling out my name while his physical condition got much worse. Mom was re

Dad resorted to ruthless means out of sheer favoritism, while Henry deliberately hid the truth out of jealousy. They played their parts perfectly, turning the whole situation into a total family farce.Mom frowned as she snapped, "That's enough! What's the use of blaming each other?"She then looked at me and tried to play the family card, brushing it off easily. "It's all in the past now, Gavin. Your father was definitely in the wrong, but you didn't actually lose out on anything since you still got into Crestvale University. Why don't we just put this behind us and move on, never bringing this up again?"I almost laughed at how absurd Mom's remarks sounded. I slowly shook my head and said, "I'm not letting this go."I spoke softly, but with absolute certainty. "If I hadn't gotten early admission to Crestvale University, that hidden admission ticket would have made me miss the SAT entirely. You guys would have ruined my future. "Do you really think telling me to move on can eras

I continued asking, "Do you think you would have been happy for me, or would you have found a way to stop me, like when you hid my admission ticket? You did that because you were afraid I would outshine Henry, afraid he couldn't handle it, and afraid he would be unhappy!"Those remarks tore apart the last bit of justification they had.Dad's face instantly turned pale, looking completely panicked. He snapped, "What are you blabbering about? What do you mean by hiding your admission ticket? You clearly lost that ticket yourself, and we were the ones who found it under the couch! How dare you slander us with such accusations!""Dad's right, Gavin!" Henry exclaimed, looking up in disbelief. "You clearly lost the admission ticket yourself! Dad was even kind enough to find it for you, so how can you frame Dad like that?"I looked at the two of them putting on a united front, feeling nothing but disgust. "You think I'm falsely accusing you?"I chuckled softly and held up my open palm, a

Dad snapped at Henry impatiently, "Why are you comparing yourself to Gavin? He never had what it takes to succeed in school, and his grades were always terrible, so we stopped expecting anything from him long ago! You're not like him, Henry! You're our pride! How could your grades drop this much?"Mom chimed in as well. "That's right, Henry! Gavin has never been serious about studying. He spends all day keeping to himself. How could he possibly compare to you? You should stop comparing yourself to him and think about what you did wrong!"I hid in my small bedroom, feeling a sharp pang in my chest. I could barely breathe at that moment. They never knew that the paper they had dismissed had actually earned me 12th place in the entire grade. They never knew how early I woke to study or how late I stayed up doing practice questions. They had no idea that I had sacrificed every form of entertainment to focus on school.I rarely spoke about my efforts, but that didn't mean I wasn't work

Dad continued, "It's just that Gavin has always been a quiet kid and doesn't like drawing attention to himself. He never took the initiative to tell us the details about his guaranteed spot, so we were caught off guard for a moment. I'm truly sorry for making fools of ourselves, everyone!"Hearing this, the relatives nodded in approval. They tried to smooth over the awkwardness with polite remarks about how staying humble was a virtue and how impressive it was that I kept my talent hidden. They, however, were the only ones who knew whether they genuinely believed Dad's explanation or were just biting their tongue. There were quite a few people who started looking at Mom and Dad differently. They had twin sons—one had been guaranteed admission to Crestvale University, while the other had only made it into a top university. Yet, they had held a huge celebratory dinner for the latter. They had been completely unaware of the former but had showered the latter with attention. Their

In the meantime, the chatter in the private room was still going on, while the crystal chandelier illuminated everyone's faces, revealing the shock and confusion written across them. The remark from the teacher, Peter Lester, landed like a boulder in a still lake, instantly throwing the celebration dinner into chaos.Henry's bright smile stiffened almost instantly. His hands clenched into tight fists with pale knuckles, and a sudden look of panic flickered in his eyes that he could barely conceal. He instinctively lowered his head and pretended to adjust his clothes, not daring to meet the glances directed at him from around the room. He was especially terrified to meet my gaze.Dad's proud, smug expression froze instantly. He was still smiling faintly, but his eyes looked completely dazed. He stood frozen in place, seemingly unable to understand Mr. Lester's words. He finally snapped out of his daze after a moment and asked tremblingly, "W-What did you just say, Mr. Lester? Did
