Chapter 5

作者: Pumpkin Scoop
Half an hour later, Dad pushed open my bedroom door with a huge grin still plastered on his face. "Henry's results are out, so we'll be hosting a celebratory dinner for the relatives and his teachers tonight. Go change into something nice for once and stop wearing clothes that look so worn out, Gavin."

He glanced at my washed-out shirt and jeans with a frown. He didn't say anything more about it and just turned around to get back to his planning.

Henry walked out of his room looking sharp at 4:00 pm. He was dressed in high-end streetwear with his hair styled, sporting a new watch on his wrist. He looked very youthful and stylish in his fit. He glanced at my plain outfit with a hint of dissatisfaction and asked, "Why haven't you changed yet, Gavin?"

"I'll go change now," I said. I returned to my room and pulled a somewhat old blue shirt from the closet. It was the only new piece of clothing Mom and Dad had gotten me last year.

Henry said the color made him look older, so he didn't want it. That was how it ended up with me.

I put on the shirt and looked at myself in the mirror, noticing that my complexion and lips were pale, and my eyes were completely devoid of emotion. I looked like a plant that had grown in the shade—dull and lifeless—compared to Henry, who was all youth and sunshine.

Upon reaching the restaurant, the private room was already filled with relatives, as well as a few of Henry's teachers.

Henry made his way around the room like a social butterfly, smiling as he greeted everyone and accepted their compliments and congratulations.

Dad stuck right beside him, completely unable to hide his pride. He patted Henry's hand every so often, painting a picture of a loving father and son. Mom sat with a few female relatives, talking animatedly with a glowing complexion while looking visibly delighted.

Henry had just posted a new update on his social media, showing two money transfers from Mom and Dad—each for 750 dollars.

It was obvious that one of the relatives nearby had seen the update as well. He turned to Dad and exclaimed, "You two are really generous! You actually gave Henry 1,500 dollars in one go!"

Dad laughed heartily and exclaimed, "Henry earned it for making us so proud! He has always been such a good kid, so we never had to worry about his grades!"

Just then, Henry sat down beside me. He looked at me expectantly and said, "I did so well on my SAT this time, Gavin. You didn't forget to get me a gift, did you?"

I hadn't even had the chance to say anything before Mom and Dad walked over and responded without hesitation. "Your brother's been working part-time, hasn't he? He can just send you his wages from the past few days as your congratulatory gift."

Dad naturally leaned over to glance at my phone screen, probably checking how much money I had in my bank account.

Just then, a notification for a high-speed train booking popped up on my phone instead. His expression instantly shifted as he asked, "What's this, Gavin? Where are you off to?"

Henry also noticed the notification, his expression instantly souring. He pouted and asked, "You aren't trying to tag along on my graduation trip, are you, Gavin? You still have to repeat a year before retaking the SAT, you know?

"I get that losing your admission ticket and missing the SAT is embarrassing to talk about, but you don't have to tag along just to put on a show in front of outsiders, Gavin."

Just as Henry finished speaking, a teacher sitting nearby suddenly frowned and asked with a look of total confusion, "Why would Gavin have to retake his SAT? Didn't Gavin secure a guaranteed spot at Crestvale University a long time ago?"

  • Parents Rigged My Future to Boost My Brother   Chapter 11

I recalled the little boy who used to cry quietly under his blanket. I just wanted to hold him and tell him that it was going to be alright and that everything was behind him. I wanted to let him know that he was wonderful, he deserved good things, and he had finally gotten away from all that unhappiness to start living for himself.I became more accustomed to life in Brightvale as time went by; my grades were steadily improving, and my part-time job was going really well. I slowly built up some savings and no longer had to walk on eggshells around anyone. It went on like that until six months later, when I logged into a social media account I hadn't used in a long time and saw a direct message from Henry. I had blocked him everywhere else, so this was the only way he could reach me.Henry sent me a few super long messages. He wrote that after I moved out, Dad fell seriously ill and spent his days dazed, calling out my name while his physical condition got much worse. Mom was re

Dad resorted to ruthless means out of sheer favoritism, while Henry deliberately hid the truth out of jealousy. They played their parts perfectly, turning the whole situation into a total family farce.Mom frowned as she snapped, "That's enough! What's the use of blaming each other?"She then looked at me and tried to play the family card, brushing it off easily. "It's all in the past now, Gavin. Your father was definitely in the wrong, but you didn't actually lose out on anything since you still got into Crestvale University. Why don't we just put this behind us and move on, never bringing this up again?"I almost laughed at how absurd Mom's remarks sounded. I slowly shook my head and said, "I'm not letting this go."I spoke softly, but with absolute certainty. "If I hadn't gotten early admission to Crestvale University, that hidden admission ticket would have made me miss the SAT entirely. You guys would have ruined my future. "Do you really think telling me to move on can eras

I continued asking, "Do you think you would have been happy for me, or would you have found a way to stop me, like when you hid my admission ticket? You did that because you were afraid I would outshine Henry, afraid he couldn't handle it, and afraid he would be unhappy!"Those remarks tore apart the last bit of justification they had.Dad's face instantly turned pale, looking completely panicked. He snapped, "What are you blabbering about? What do you mean by hiding your admission ticket? You clearly lost that ticket yourself, and we were the ones who found it under the couch! How dare you slander us with such accusations!""Dad's right, Gavin!" Henry exclaimed, looking up in disbelief. "You clearly lost the admission ticket yourself! Dad was even kind enough to find it for you, so how can you frame Dad like that?"I looked at the two of them putting on a united front, feeling nothing but disgust. "You think I'm falsely accusing you?"I chuckled softly and held up my open palm, a

Dad snapped at Henry impatiently, "Why are you comparing yourself to Gavin? He never had what it takes to succeed in school, and his grades were always terrible, so we stopped expecting anything from him long ago! You're not like him, Henry! You're our pride! How could your grades drop this much?"Mom chimed in as well. "That's right, Henry! Gavin has never been serious about studying. He spends all day keeping to himself. How could he possibly compare to you? You should stop comparing yourself to him and think about what you did wrong!"I hid in my small bedroom, feeling a sharp pang in my chest. I could barely breathe at that moment. They never knew that the paper they had dismissed had actually earned me 12th place in the entire grade. They never knew how early I woke to study or how late I stayed up doing practice questions. They had no idea that I had sacrificed every form of entertainment to focus on school.I rarely spoke about my efforts, but that didn't mean I wasn't work

Dad continued, "It's just that Gavin has always been a quiet kid and doesn't like drawing attention to himself. He never took the initiative to tell us the details about his guaranteed spot, so we were caught off guard for a moment. I'm truly sorry for making fools of ourselves, everyone!"Hearing this, the relatives nodded in approval. They tried to smooth over the awkwardness with polite remarks about how staying humble was a virtue and how impressive it was that I kept my talent hidden. They, however, were the only ones who knew whether they genuinely believed Dad's explanation or were just biting their tongue. There were quite a few people who started looking at Mom and Dad differently. They had twin sons—one had been guaranteed admission to Crestvale University, while the other had only made it into a top university. Yet, they had held a huge celebratory dinner for the latter. They had been completely unaware of the former but had showered the latter with attention. Their

In the meantime, the chatter in the private room was still going on, while the crystal chandelier illuminated everyone's faces, revealing the shock and confusion written across them. The remark from the teacher, Peter Lester, landed like a boulder in a still lake, instantly throwing the celebration dinner into chaos.Henry's bright smile stiffened almost instantly. His hands clenched into tight fists with pale knuckles, and a sudden look of panic flickered in his eyes that he could barely conceal. He instinctively lowered his head and pretended to adjust his clothes, not daring to meet the glances directed at him from around the room. He was especially terrified to meet my gaze.Dad's proud, smug expression froze instantly. He was still smiling faintly, but his eyes looked completely dazed. He stood frozen in place, seemingly unable to understand Mr. Lester's words. He finally snapped out of his daze after a moment and asked tremblingly, "W-What did you just say, Mr. Lester? Did
