Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
Natalie froze, searching my face for any sign that I was just sulking.

After all, we'd been married for five years. To us, the wedding was only a formality.

It had never once occurred to her that I'd waited five whole years for this one wedding.

Just as she hesitated, about to step toward me, Brett suddenly grabbed her arm. "Nolan, you've hated me ever since you got married, but there's no need to make a scene and embarrass Natalie."

Natalie's gaze turned cold at once. Nothing made her angrier than being threatened.

"Nolan, you're the one who told me to look after Brett. You said it wasn't easy for him, being on his own in this city. And now you're turning around and suspecting the two of us?

"You got to play the good guy the whole time! How is my family supposed to show our faces now?"

In an instant, I became the target of everyone's scorn.

The guests turned contemptuous stares on me.

Agnes, who'd kept silent all along, spoke up viciously, "I always said a man from a humble family wasn't fit to marry into ours. Somebody, bring out the family rod!"

Natalie glanced hesitantly at her mother, but in the end, she chose to say nothing.

A second later, bodyguards rushed over and pinned me down. I couldn't believe what was happening.

Desperate to protect me, my mother grabbed a chair and swung it at the bodyguards. "You'd beat someone right out in the open? Let go of my son!"

The moment she finished speaking, Natalie gave them a look, and the bodyguards dragged my mother out of the banquet hall.

"Marilyn, you saw for yourself how far he went," Natalie said. "We Knights have our own rules. I can't let him run his mouth like this!"

The instant the three-foot rod struck my back, I pitched forward onto the floor in a sorry heap.

The rod had been custom-made. After only three strokes, blood had soaked the back of my white shirt red.

Involuntary tears poured down my face.

Back when Natalie had gone behind her mother's back to register our marriage, she'd taken ten brutal strokes herself.

Afterward, her face had gone completely white, sweat pouring off her like rain, but she'd still grinned at me. "As long as I get to marry you, any beating is worth it."

She knew exactly what it felt like, yet she could still bear to make me go through that same despair.

My blood-soaked wedding suit weighed on me like lead.

I was tossed onto the floor like garbage, blood gushing out beneath me.

I dragged myself over, grabbed the hem of Natalie's dress, and begged, "Take me... take me to the hospital."

But the moment the words left my mouth, Brett groaned and leaned against her. "Natalie, my head hurts so much. It feels like it's splitting open."

Natalie hurried to hold him up and didn't spare me another glance.

The crowd scattered.

By the time a passerby got me to the hospital, the doctor regretfully told me my lower back had been broken.

"Did you run into some enemy or something? Who would hit someone this hard?"

I laughed bitterly and said nothing.

Tears slid silently from the corners of my eyes. Nothing could hurt more than this.

I called my lawyer and asked him to draw up divorce papers.

I'd drifted into a groggy sleep when a phone call from my mother jolted me awake. "Nolan, come back right now! A bunch of people just showed up out of nowhere, and they're trying to tear down our old house!"

Before I could react, she broke down in tears. "You're alive...""What are you doing here?" I cut her off coldly. At my words, Natalie's breath caught, and an awkward look crossed her face."Do you know how hard I looked for you? Just seeing you standing here safe and sound makes me so happy. Why didn't you answer my messages? And why didn't you tell me you changed your number?"The string of questions only gave me a headache."You came to my house in the middle of the night instead of sleeping, just to ask me these pointless questions? Natalie, I have nothing to say to you."As I started to close the door, she wedged herself against it, not caring if it crushed her. "Hear me out, Nolan. I don't care what you've heard. My feelings for you are real. You...""Real?" I let out a speechless laugh and threw the fake marriage certificate in her face."This is what you call sincerity? Getting a marriage license with my childhood best friend, then fooling around with him backstage at

In that critical moment, I saw a familiar face.Sophie Ellison dragged me out of the rubble and cast a regretful glance at my mother. "Nolan, I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner."When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed.All my burns had been bandaged. Sophie sat by my bed, her eyes red."You're awake?"From the way she hesitated, I could guess that my mother was beyond saving. The moment my tears fell, she gently wiped them away. "By the time I got there, she was already gone. If I hadn't seen the livestream of the press conference and rushed over to help you, I might never have seen you again."Sophie had grown up with me, and she'd long been in the habit of pulling me out of trouble. But after I got married, I'd never contacted her again.Seeing the wounds all over my body, a flash of hatred crossed her eyes. "Brett promised me he'd take good care of you. And now he's the one who did this to you! I'm not letting him get away with it!"As for that friendship

"What?!" Natalie nearly lost her footing.By the time she rushed over, a body had already been carried out.Marilyn, Nolan's mother, had been burned beyond recognition."Wh-what on earth happened here?"A first responder at the scene explained, "Someone kidnapped the elderly woman and brought her here. They strapped explosives to her, and she was blown up alive."Natalie's blood ran cold as a terrifying thought flashed through her mind. "What about my husband?"The responder shook his head, and she seemed to relax a little.Unable to stop herself, she called Nolan. His ringtone sounded from somewhere nearby.Following the sound, she found Nolan's phone lying on the ground close by."Why is his phone here?"Clearly, Nolan had witnessed the entire explosion. He'd even dropped his phone here. It wasn't hard to imagine how badly he'd been hurt."Find out who kidnapped my mother-in-law!"Her assistant immediately sent people to investigate. When the bodyguards came back, not on

The massive blast shattered the windows of the press conference hall.Everyone descended into chaos."What on earth is going on? Somebody call the police!"Natalie turned toward the thick smoke billowing outside, and for some reason, her heart sank lower and lower."It can't be..."Brett immediately cut her off. "No way. Knowing Nolan, he's bound to find some way to get back at us. For all we know, he set up the explosion himself just to blow off steam."Seeing the wounded, long-suffering look on his face, Natalie pushed her worry for Nolan completely out of her mind."Nolan isn't a bad person at heart. Maybe I've just spoiled him too much, and that's why he gets so jealous. As for us... let's not tell him for now."She knew better than anyone that Nolan treasured love and friendship above everything else.If he found out she'd slept with Brett, it would break him.On the surface, Brett nodded obediently, but he opened the view history on his post.In truth, he could guess t

I glared at her, my eyes nearly popping out of my head. "You're so heartless!"The reporters swarmed forward like they'd gone mad. Brett made a show of shielding me. "My buddy's about to apologize. Just give him a moment."Looking at that utterly fake face of his, I spat at him.Everyone around us gasped, and Natalie's face darkened instantly. Before long, our old neighbor back home, Rhonda Fraser, called me. "A bunch of people just came by saying they're going to auction off your mom's old house. That house means the world to her!"Stunned, I looked up and met Natalie's eyes. There wasn't a shred of feeling in them."It's just an apology. Don't let this get out of hand."A bleak, broken laugh burst out of me.My hands numbly undid my shirt, then my pants, as waves of cold swallowed me inch by inch.I no longer cared how many leering eyes landed on me.The cameras were practically shoved in my face.Within minutes, a flood of vicious harassment poured into my phone.[Lock

Before I could say a word, my mother's shrill cries on the other end of the line cut off abruptly. It hit me like a bolt of lightning. I yanked the IV out of my arm and rushed to her old house. There she was, pinned beneath a bulldozer, barely breathing. "Nolan, don't go begging her for my sake anymore."An ambulance rushed my mother to the hospital, but the demolition crew kept tearing the place apart."Stop right now! Who sent you here?"The crew's foreman kicked me away. "Get lost! Ms. Knight called me herself and told me to do this!"Stunned, I pulled the marriage certificate out of my pocket. "I'm her husband! I'm ordering you to stop right now!"The crew crowded around to look at it. The next moment, their laughter was deafening."You've got the nerve to pose as Ms. Knight's husband with a fake certificate? You think we're idiots?"I picked the marriage certificate up off the ground. Only then did I notice it didn't have an embossed seal.So when Brett called himself he
