Chapter 3

Author: Zion Cyrus
Evelyn turned her head and fixed me with a sharp stare.

"Look, since Liam is willing to be generous and forgive you, I'll treat this as a misunderstanding. But Chloe is an innocent young woman. She can't just suffer this kind of humiliation for nothing.

"Emma, right here in front of all the guests, get on your knees, and beg Chloe for her forgiveness. Also, transfer the vacant villa you own in the south part of town to her. Then this matter is settled."

Evelyn lifted her chin, her tone leaving no room for argument.

"And don't even think about setting foot inside the Reynold family's estate for the rest of your life."

What a noble, righteous mother-in-law. What a self-sacrificing Reynolds family.

I looked at the people in front of me.

Liam, with his fake expression of "I'm doing this for your own good," Chloe with her coy, fragile act, and my future mother-in-law's shameless greed, using morality as a cover to rob me of a house.

In my past life, this suffocating combination of moral blackmail and phony forgiveness had driven me to the brink of collapse. In the end, unable to defend myself, I was labeled a crazy woman.

But in this life, I only felt disgust. And also, absurdly, laughter.

'You want my villa? You want to trample over my flesh and blood to build your own adulterous little fairy tale?'

I slowly wiped the cold smile off my face and, under a sea of contemptuous stares, took one step forward.

"You want me to kneel and beg for her forgiveness, and throw in a villa?"

I scanned the entire room, finally letting my gaze land on Liam's face, which was struggling to stay composed. My voice turned ice cold.

"Liam, do you really think this little act of righteous sacrifice you're putting on is touching? You want me to confess?"

I locked eyes with him and spoke each word deliberately.

"Who do you think you are?"

The moment I said that, Liam's face froze. His mask of devotion and magnanimity nearly cracked.

But he recovered quickly, immediately putting on an expression of agonized heartbreak mixed with pity. He strode toward me and reached out to forcibly grab my shoulder.

"Emma! Are you having another paranoid episode? What are you talking about?"

With the tone of someone soothing a mental patient, he sighed helplessly for everyone to hear. "Please forgive her. Her condition is getting worse. She can't tell reality from fantasy anymore."

As he spoke, he tightened his grip, trying to force my head down into a bow toward Chloe.

"Be good. Stop making a scene. Just lower your head and apologize to Chloe, and this whole thing will be over—"

I sidestepped his dirty hand, grabbed a wine glass from the nearby table, and smashed it at his feet.

The room went dead silent again.

I stood there in the shattered glass, staring coldly at him.

"Keep your filthy hands—the ones that have touched other women—off me."

Liam was stunned by my sudden outburst.

He probably never expected that I, who had always swallowed my pride for the sake of keeping the peace, would completely flip the table today.

Evelyn immediately started shrieking.

"Crazy! Emma has absolutely lost her mind! Liam, call security. Get her out of here. Don't let her make a mockery of us any longer!"

The groomsmen and hotel security moved in, trying to grab me.

Liam's face turned ashen. He dropped all pretense of patience.

"Emma! That's enough! If you keep acting like this, I'm going to have to call a psychiatrist!"

The same old trick again. Paint me as crazy, try to strip me of my right to speak as a normal person in front of everyone.

I watched his furious, flustered face and spoke slowly.

"Don't bother calling a doctor."

I met their uneasy, suspicious stares and let out a cold laugh.

"I've already called the police."

As soon as I said that, the color drained completely from Liam and Chloe's faces.

"What are you talking about?" Liam hissed, veins bulging in his forehead.

"Sexual harassment and forcible groping are actual criminal charges. Since you're both so certain that I tore her dress and assaulted her—such serious accusations—then of course we should let the police decide what really happened."

Liam also dropped to his knees with a thud, yanking at his hair as he sobbed."Emma, I was forced into it! I embezzled the money because I wanted to get ahead, to give us a good life! For the sake of all those years I took care of you, please let me off just this once! I don't want to go to prison!"The flashbulbs around them were going off like crazy. Business elites and reporters attending the summit had stopped to watch this absurd spectacle.I looked at Liam kneeling on the ground and at his mother, who was trying to buy off three hundred million dollars in crimes with a cheap thermos of soup. All I felt was a hollow, heartbreaking absurdity. This was the true ugliness of human nature. They weren't sorry for their greed and cruelty. They were crying over the freedom and money they were about to lose. They actually thought that bowing their heads, saying sorry, and cooking a pot of soup meant the victim should forgive all the monstrous things they had done.I lowered my gaze

Liam finally realized what he had lost.Three hundred million dollars in financial fraud. That was enough to rot in prison for the rest of his life. The man who, just moments ago, had been threatening to cut off my funding, dropped to his knees and started banging his head on the floor."Emma! I was wrong! Chloe tricked me! For the sake of our three years together, please let me go! I'll be your slave for the rest of my life!"I looked down at him sobbing like a dog. There wasn't an ounce of warmth in my eyes."Take him away. And notify my lawyer. The agreement Liam signed before the wedding—the one saying he leaves with nothing—is effective immediately."…The evidence against Liam for embezzlement and money laundering was ironclad. All his assets were frozen. He was blacklisted by the entire financial industry and faced a minimum of ten years in prison. His parents sold everything they had and scraped together a massive bail payment, just to keep him from rotting in a holding

I looked at Liam and felt nothing but a churning nausea in my stomach."A momentary mistake? Just humoring her? Just be honest! You were trying to have me committed to a mental hospital by spreading lies that I'm a lesbian, so you could steal my family fortune. Liam, you really thought you had it all figured out, didn't you?"Seeing that the soft approach wasn't working, the last traces of fake decency drained from Liam's eyes. He gritted his teeth."Emma, don't push it! So what if I slept with her? You really think your family is still what it used to be? Your entire company's funding is being kept alive by my venture capital fund."Liam's voice dripped with vicious threats."If you call off this wedding and ruin my reputation today, I'll pull the funding tomorrow. I'll drive your family business into bankruptcy. And then you'll be on your knees begging me to take you back."Just as he was ranting at his most unhinged, the tightly closed doors of the banquet hall suddenly swung

"Liam, your ability to twist the truth is wasted here. You should be writing fiction. But since you care so much about Chloe's reputation..."I turned my head toward the sound booth in the corner of the banquet hall and spoke with unwavering clarity."Then let's all have a good listen to exactly who tore that dress off her."The moment I finished speaking, Liam's face went from livid to ash-gray."What are you talking about?"I let out a cold laugh, my gaze falling on the tiny, inconspicuous black clip on the inside of his suit lapel."Liam, to sell your image as the perfect husband in today's wedding documentary, you spent a fortune renting this high-fidelity wireless microphone setup. You wanted every moment of our 'love story' recorded."I watched his pupils shrink."When you were thinking with something other than your brain, did you forget—"Liam gasped sharply and frantically reached for the microphone on his chest."Turn it off! Shut it down back there right now!" he s

I turned around, ignoring Liam, whose expression had shifted slightly. Instead, I raised my hand and snapped my fingers toward the control booth at the back of the banquet hall."Put the feed up on the big screen."The screen flickered. Our giant wedding portrait vanished. In its place was a crystal-clear phone livestream interface, the comments scrolling wildly. The title of the stream was clearly visible: [Emma's Wedding Countdown!]In the top right corner, the live viewer count was climbing at a terrifying speed. It had already surpassed one hundred and fifty thousand people. Not only that, because the microphone had been on this whole time, the chat had completely exploded. Thick waves of bullet comments flooded the entire screen.[HOLY SHIT. My jaw is on the floor.][The groom and bridesmaids are idiots, right? They're putting on this whole soap opera and don't realize 150k of us have been watching the bride this whole time?][I'M SCREEN RECORDING. That Chloe girl is dis

I looked at Chloe and deliberately emphasized each word."Once the police get here, they can take that torn bridesmaid dress back for a full fingerprint and DNA analysis. I'm very curious to find out whether the skin cells and saliva they find on it belong to me, or to someone else."The moment she heard the words "DNA analysis," Chloe's legs gave out, and she nearly collapsed onto the floor.Liam was also drenched in cold sweat. He clearly hadn't expected that I would refuse to play by his rules—that I would rather turn my own wedding into a criminal case than swallow this humiliation.Just as his brain was racing to come up with another lie to force the situation back under control, a sharp, unmistakable wail of police sirens came from outside the banquet hall.…Two uniformed police officers strode through the doors. The guests, who had been whispering among themselves, fell instantly silent. No one had expected that this marriage between two wealthy families would actually e
