Chapter 2

مؤلف: Footsteps Forest
Tara's expression darkened, and she let out a cold laugh.

"Zach, it's not like retaking the exam next year is such a big deal for you. Is this attitude really necessary?"

"Exactly, Zach." Cyrus sighed. "Tara's only thinking of what's best for the three of us. Your grades are so good, you'll have no problem passing next year."

I stared at Cyrus's pretty face and almost laughed out of pure anger.

"Sacrificing someone else's future to make room for your little romance. How noble of you both."

I stood up and glanced at the clock on the wall. Five o'clock exactly. Right on cue, the bell rang, marking the end of the exam period.

"Time's up. I should be getting home."

I grabbed my bag without bothering to look at either of them again.

"Best wishes to the two of you. May you live happily ever after."

I hailed my own taxi back to the Tipton family estate.

The moment I stepped out of the car, a black Rolls-Royce pulled up right beside me. Cyrus climbed out, and the driver scrambled to carry his bag and hold an umbrella over his head, completely ignoring me, the actual heir standing right there.

Cyrus and I walked inside together.

My parents, who'd been waiting in the living room, broke into smiles the instant they saw us and hurried over. Except their eyes swept right past me and landed on Cyrus.

"Cyrus, you're home! Are you tired? How'd the exam go?"

My mother took Cyrus's hand, fussing over him with obvious affection.

Cyrus smiled sweetly, though he couldn't quite hide the smugness in his voice.

"Dad, Mom, I think I did really well. Tara and I compared answers right after the test. Our scores should easily get us into Boxwood."

"Really? That's wonderful! You're no doubt the son we raised with so much care!"

My father beamed, his eyes shining with pride.

Cyrus suddenly turned, as if just now noticing me, and said with a bright smile, "Zach must have done well too, right?"

That was when my mother seemed to remember I existed. She turned toward me, the warmth in her smile fading noticeably, and asked, almost as an afterthought, "Zach, how was your exam?"

Watching their two completely different reactions, all I felt was bitter irony. In their eyes, I was the son they'd found halfway through, someone who'd never measure up to the fake heir they'd raised with their own hands.

I answered flatly. "It was fine."

"Fine's good enough. We never expected much from you anyway. As long as you get into some school, that's all that matters."

My father waved a hand, clearly uninterested in discussing the topic any further.

Cyrus took the opportunity to loop his arm through our father's, playing the doting son.

"Dad, since Tara and I both did so well, shouldn't we throw a celebration dinner? I'd love to invite everyone from school to come celebrate with us."

"We'll throw one! Of course we will!" Father said cheerfully. "And not just our family, either. We'll get the Mowrys in on it too!"

Cyrus's lips curved into a satisfied smile as he turned to look at me.

"Zach, I know you probably don't understand what it means to get into a school as prestigious as Boxwood. But you should definitely come to the dinner tomorrow and share in the good luck."

I gave Cyrus a cold look, said nothing, and went straight upstairs.

The moment I got to my room, my phone buzzed. The class group chat was flooded with messages, everyone comparing answers and estimating their scores. Then Cyrus sent a long message of his own.

[To celebrate the end of the graduate exam for me and Tara, our families, the Tiptons and the Mowrys, are hosting a joint dinner tomorrow night. We'd love for everyone to come celebrate with us. Please do us the honor of joining!]

After the celebration dinner, I cut off all contact with my university classmates and moved out of the Tipton estate. There were still about two and a half weeks until I had to report to the Institute. The next day, my phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number.[Zach, you're about to report to the Institute, and your ID card is still with me. You're going to need it.][Let's meet up, at that café across from the school. I'll give it back to you.]I looked at the message, frowning slightly. If she hadn't reminded me, I would have nearly forgotten my ID was still in her hands. Reporting to the Institute genuinely required the original document, and getting a replacement issued would be too much of a hassle. I thought it over, then sent back a single word. [Fine.]At three that afternoon, I arrived at the café we'd agreed on. Tara was already seated by the window, waiting. She looked like she hadn't slept all night, dark circles and faint red veins ringing her eyes.I pulled

"Professor Moore."I stood up abruptly, cutting him off. I didn't want to hear Tara's name come out of his mouth, and I definitely didn't want anyone thinking I'd done all this out of some grand, devoted love for her. Whatever was left of the bond between our two families had already turned into a joke not worth mentioning, the moment she'd taken my exam permit outside that testing hall.I picked up the glass in front of me, walked past my ashen-faced parents and Tara, and stopped in front of Professor Moore."Professor Moore, thank you for everything you've done for me these past four years, and thank you for bringing this document here today. I'd like to raise this glass to you."Professor Moore blinked, unsure why I'd cut him off, but he smiled and nodded anyway."Good kid. Go do great things at the Institute. I'm proud of you."I drained the glass in one go.At the head table, Tara had gone completely rigid. She'd finally understood. If I'd already secured my placement, w

I found the whole thing almost funny, and I didn't even bother looking up."I came here today to thank my professor, not to watch the two of you put on a show."Tara's expression shifted instantly, and Father looked ready to slam his hand on the table. Just then, the door to the private room swung open. Professor Moore walked in, beaming, a briefcase slung over his shoulder."Everyone, parents included, is everyone here? Sorry I'm late; I ran into the dean downstairs and got caught up talking. I'm really happy about tonight's celebration."Professor Moore stood at the head of the room, smiling broadly."Our class's grad exam results this year were genuinely impressive, especially Tara and Cyrus, both of whom cleared the cutoff for Boxwood's second-round interviews. Well done, both of you. Congratulations."Tara and Cyrus exchanged a proud, satisfied glance. My parents straightened in their seats, practically glowing with pride.Professor Moore's gaze swept across the room and

The photo showed him and Tara having a candlelit dinner at a restaurant, Tara gazing at him adoringly, Cyrus beaming back at her.[The grad exam's finally over, and I finally get to relax with the person I love!][I heard some upsetting news today, and it's honestly been weighing on me. Everyone's entitled to their own choices, and failure isn't something to be ashamed of. What's shameful is hiding your own weakness behind lies, going so far as to fake honors that are completely out of reach.][I hope a certain someone can pick himself back up soon. Retaking the exam a year later really isn't a big deal. Tara and I will both be cheering you on from Boxwood.]Underneath, a neat row of likes had already piled up, Tara's icon sitting right at the top. Then a message came through on a new group chat someone had created, and I'd apparently been added without my knowledge. Someone had posted a screenshot of Cyrus's announcement in the chat, along with a "love" sticker.[Tara and Cyrus

The screen showed the electronic acceptance letter for the Distinguished Scholars PhD Program, a joint initiative launched by the National Institute of Advanced Sciences. My information and an official digital seal were printed clearly across it.Tara froze. "The Institute... a direct placement?"Standing beside her, Cyrus's mouth twitched twice before he managed to force out a smile."Zach, are you... are you sure you didn't grab the wrong picture? There are barely a handful of direct placements at the Institute nationwide each year, and you'd have to go through several rounds of written tests and interviews."Your grades are decent, sure, but there's no way you could've quietly landed something like that without anyone hearing about it..."Something seemed to click for Tara, and her eyes lit up. She smiled."Mr. Tipton, Mrs. Tipton, I know Zach didn't finish his last exam, and he must feel awful about it, worried you'd be upset with him. But faking something like this really is

The dinner was hosted jointly by the Tiptons and the Mowrys, and the scale of it showed. They'd booked out an entire ballroom at a five-star hotel. Nearly everyone from our class had come, filling several large round tables. I was seated at the very edge of the head table, watching my parents exchange pleasantries with Tara's parents, as if Cyrus were their only source of pride. The small talk hadn't gone on long before Tara and Cyrus came over to the head table, glasses of juice in hand, to make a toast. Tara was dressed formally for the occasion. She glanced at me, her lips curling into a faintly mocking smile, then let out a sigh that landed at exactly the wrong moment."Mr. Tipton, Mrs. Tipton, I'm honestly so glad Zach could make it today. After he skipped his last exam yesterday, I was worried he'd be too embarrassed to show his face."The head table went silent instantly.Mother froze, then turned to look at me. "Zach… skipped what exam?"Classmates at the nearby tabl
