Chapter 2

Penulis: Egg Yolk
Josie and William's wedding trended locally. However, I was the one who had booked the hotel and picked the day, and every thread on her wedding dress had been sewn by my mother.

I never expected the reason for her to postpone the wedding was to have it with William first. I stopped scrolling through news of their wedding and returned home to pack my luggage.

My father, Hank Carter, called me around noontime. "Sam, didn't you change the date for your wedding?"

Something about his voice did not sound right, and I asked right away. "Where are you, Dad?"

"I'm at the hotel. They called me just now to inform me that they have used up most of the alcohol we sent over, and they wanted to know if they should serve up the remaining drinks."

He paused. "I thought your wedding was postponed and wondered why the hotel was serving all the wine we brought over, so I stopped by to have a look."

I grabbed my keys and headed out right away. "Leave the hotel first, Dad. I'm coming over to pick you up."

Before I was done talking, I heard the wedding emcee speaking through the phone. "The groom may now kiss the bride!"

The applause and whistles covered my father's voice, and he changed our call into a video call. His hands were shaking while holding the phone, which was pointed right at the stage.

William had lifted Josie's veil and had his hand on the back of her neck. She lifted her face and closed her eyes, allowing William to kiss her on the lips. Everyone below the stage was applauding.

"Kiss her again!"

"Don't be shy!"

Josie and William did not shy away from each other. It was only when Josie turned red in the face and pushed him away gently that they finally separated, but William still had his hand around her waist.

Below the stage, Maude patted Arthur's arm while smiling. Meanwhile, William's parents were also applauding. Both families sat together happily as they watched their children getting married.

My father's voice was trembling so badly as he stood outside the venue door and said, "I… Isn't Josie supposed to be marrying you?"

The huge screen on the stage lit up to play clips of behind-the-scenes moments of the wedding. The first part showed Josie sitting on William's lap as she helped him put on his tie with her head lowered.

"All right. We've got it," said the photographer.

However, Josie did not stand up. Her hands were still on William's shoulders as they turned to look at the picture taken by the photographer.

The next clip showed William hugging her from behind, wrapping her in his arms. She laughed and slapped his hand off. "Let go. They're not taking pictures of us anymore."

"Don't be shy. There's no one here."

Josie covered her mouth and giggled before burying her face in his shoulder.

The timestamp in the corner showed that the clip was taken on 3rd August. That meant they had taken the wedding pictures two months ago.

Maude was suddenly heard speaking through the phone. "Hank, what are you doing here? Josie told us this is just something arranged to cheer up an elderly woman, and it's not our place to stop her. Since you're here, come join us at the table. They're serving the food soon."

However, my father did not accept the offer. "So, all of you are aware of what's going on?"

Arthur came over and glanced at my father's phone. "The children know what they're doing, Hank. You shouldn't be involved with their business. It's all just a show. It doesn't hurt for them to kiss."

It took quite a while for my father to finally say something. "This wasn't what you said when my wife was hospitalized. When she wanted them to get married, all she wanted was to see them being an official married couple, and didn't even ask for a grand wedding, but you said it shouldn't be rushed. Why is it that when the groom has changed, you're all right with organizing a pretend wedding?"

Maude's smile faltered. "Your wife is already gone. Is it necessary for you to bring her up now?"

The camera slowly pointed down at a row of bottles. "What about all this bourbon? Are you using them to cheer up that elderly lady too?"

I recognized those bottles. My parents brewed them the year I was born and called them the Red Label Reserve. My mother never opened them, even until the day she died.

Now, every bottle was opened, and everyone drinking from those bottles was wishing happiness to Josie and William on their wedding day.

Arthur reached out for a bottle. "It's just a few bottles of bourbon. Just let me know how much they are, and I'll get William to pay them back to you."

My father moved forward to grab the bottles in his arms. "It doesn't matter how much you're paying for them. I'm not giving them to you. They're not for your consumption. I'm taking them back with me."

His phone started shaking vigorously.

"How can you move all this bourbon away when dinner is about to start? You're here to ruin this wedding, aren't you?!"

"Put those bottles down! All the guests are staring at us!"

"Stop embarrassing yourself here, Hank!"

A muffled thud was heard, and his phone smashed to the ground. I yelled out for my father several times, but no one answered.

By the time I arrived at the hotel, my father was already lying on the ground outside the wedding venue. His hand clutched at his chest, and his forehead was covered with sweat. Josie was still in her wedding dress as she stood next to him.

"Do you really need to create such a big fuss today, Hank?"

I glanced up at Josie but said nothing to her. "Come on, Dad. I'm not going to get married anymore. We'll give up the bourbon too. I'm taking you to the hospital."

Behind me, I heard William suddenly laughing. "Sam's still trying to put on a brave front, Josie. I wonder how long it will take for him to apologize to you this time."

The house was eventually sold off. The realtor even asked me, "Why would you sell it when you've renovated it so nicely?"I replied, "I don't want to stay here anymore."However, I still had many things kept at that house. It had clothes that my mother tailored halfway for my father, pictures of our family of three, and the furniture I bought for after Josie and I got married.Unfortunately, there was no reason to force myself to live in this house when it had been sullied by someone else. After the house was sold, I bought a smaller house for my father that was closer to the hospital and my company. The overseas project I worked on was a success, and I was promoted when I returned. I had rejected the offer to work on the project once because of Josie, but the project returned to my hands after some twists and turns. Now, I no longer needed anyone's permission to go wherever I wanted, and I did not need to consider anyone's plight of waiting for me for 18 months if I accepted a

The fiasco at our home had been turned into a video clip, which became evidence in the end. When I was away at work overseas, my aunt helped me hand the evidence over to the lawyers. I was back this time to attend the last session of mediation.William was there as well. The arrogant look he gave me 18 months ago was no longer there. "It's been a long time, Sam. It's about time you stopped this shenanigan."Before I could reply, the clacking of high heels was heard from outside the door, and Josie entered the room. William's face fell. "What are you doing here?""I'm here as a witness." She handed something to the lawyer. "I was present on that day, and I saw everything. I know who made the first move and who pushed Sam to the ground."William stared at her. "Are you coming at me because of him, Josie?"Josie did not look at him. "I'm just making up for what I failed to do then.""Can you even make it up?" William suddenly laughed. "Sam doesn't even want you anymore."Josie turn

My flight home landed 18 months later, and I walked toward the airport lobby while pulling my luggage behind me. I spotted my father right away.It had been more than a year since I had seen him, and he had more gray hair than he did before. Despite that, he looked quite high in spirits, and the fracture on his wrist had healed. I approached him with a smile. "Dad.""You're home.""I'm home."He wanted to help me with my luggage, but I refused. "I can carry the luggage myself.""Do you think I'm still a patient? You can think that when I'm 70." He laughed as he rebuked me light-heartedly."Sam." I stopped in my tracks and turned to see Josie standing in the crowd. She had lost a lot of weight in the past 18 months. She had no makeup on, and she was not specially dressed for the occasion. All she did was stand where she was while gripping her phone. My father glanced at her and said nothing.Josie approached me slowly. "You're back.""Yup."She probably did not expect my rep

A month passed, and it was soon the new date of our wedding after Josie and I postponed the previous wedding. I received an email from her at 6:00 am. [It's supposed to be our wedding day today.]At noon, she wrote another email to me. [I'm outside the hotel entrance.]Josie emailed me a picture at 11:51 pm. It was a picture of the empty venue where the tables and chairs had been rearranged for the next event. [I've waited the entire day.]At 12:01 am, she sent the last email: [The day has passed.]I did not reply. Time passed as work became busy. Three months passed, and soon it was six months later. On the day of my mother's death anniversary, I had a work meeting. My father shared a picture of an extra bouquet on my mother's grave. I glanced at it and texted him: [Did she come by?]My father replied: [Yup.]That night, he called me. "Josie waited for me a long time at the cemetery." I remained silent."She said she wanted to see your mother.""Did you let her?"

Seven days after I left the country, a mutual friend shared a clip with me. [Take a look at this. Josie had a falling out with William.]Initially, I had no interest in watching it, but his text ended with, [It was because of you.]This prompted me to click on it, and an image of a gate to a residential area was shown. Josie had gotten out of a car, and William chased after her, trying to put his hand around her shoulder, but she dodged his hand suddenly. "Don't touch me."William was taken aback. "Josie?""Don't touch me from now on," she said coldly. "And we shouldn't keep in touch anymore."William's face fell. "What do you mean? We didn't do anything when Sam was around, and now that he's gone, you're starting to draw the line with me?"Josie said nothing and turned to leave, but William blocked her way. "We've already gotten married and even kissed each other. I've even stayed at your house. What are you trying to prove now that he's gone?"She jerked her head up to look

It was noon the next day when my flight landed. The company's overseas project would last for 18 months in a country with a weak basic power facility.I turned on my phone, and numerous notifications popped up. I had dozens of missed calls from an unknown number, which also sent me several texts. Based on the tone of those texts, I could tell they were from Josie.[What do you mean by this, Sam?][Why did you block my number when I told you to come pick me up in two days?][Where are you?][Your father told me that you left the country. Is that true?][18 months?][Why didn't you discuss something so major with me?]The first few texts were full of anger, but the next ones had different tones.[Sam, I'm already home.][I've hired cleaners to clean up our house.][William is gone.][Please pick up my call.]The last text was sent at 4:00 am. [Do you really not want me anymore?]I blocked the number after reading all the texts. That night, my aunt gave me a video call. S
