Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
"Did I ever ask you to save me? Why didn't you let me die with Alex?"

My entire body turned cold as I looked at the woman who had been married to me for ten years.

During that earthquake, Josie and Alex had both been trapped under the rubble.

I chose to save Josie, causing Alex to miss his best chance of rescue.

Alex survived, but his body was left with permanent damage.

"You should be grateful that you can help Alex live like a normal person again, instead of standing here complaining.

"If I hear you complain again, we're getting divorced.

"Besides, you're useless now. Without me, you're nothing."

Seeing that I remained silent, Josie sneered and shoved a bag of ointment into my hands before walking away.

She probably thought I was afraid.

But she forgot that the excessive sleeping pills had already caused my organs to fail.

I wouldn't even live long enough to see the day we divorced.

The day after Josie left, I received a call from my mother.

Her voice was rushed but bubbling with excitement.

"Andrew, are you really willing to donate your heart to your brother? Don't go back on your word. Your brother is counting on you to save him!"

I tightened my grip on the phone. I opened my mouth, but in the end, I only answered softly, "Yeah."

After receiving my promise, I heard my mother and my brother cheering on the other end of the phone.

I lowered my gaze. A dull pain filled my chest.

Before going to the hospital, I had already arranged the blood matching test with my doctor.

Coincidentally, I ran into Josie and Alex there.

Josie was in a white coat. She was discussing seriously with several doctors whether Alex would be able to live like a normal man after receiving my organ transplant.

It was obvious that the result wasn't good.

Alex looked disappointed, and Josie frowned too.

Perhaps sensing my gaze, Alex looked up and saw me. His eyes instantly lit up.

"Andrew! Are you here to help me? I knew you wouldn't abandon me!"

After hearing my name, Josie looked surprised.

She walked toward me quickly. When she saw the medical report in my hand, she instinctively asked, "Why are you here? Did your wound not heal properly?"

Just as she reached for my report, Alex wrapped his arms around hers.

"Andrew, Josie told me that although our organ match is high, there's still a problem. I'm still missing a sperm duct to have normal reproductive function.

"Andrew, you wouldn't mind helping me with this too, would you?"

When Alex said those words, he looked completely confident that I would agree.

Josie, who stood next to him, clearly hesitated. She looked at me and opened her mouth several times, but no words came out.

Finally, she said, "Andrew, you know how hard Alex has worked to get to this point. The transplant went smoothly, and he's still young. Just give him the sperm duct too."

"Okay."

The moment Josie finished speaking, I immediately agreed.

She was so shocked that the words she was about to say to persuade me disappeared. Her eyes widened slightly as if she couldn't believe what she had just heard.

Alex excitedly hugged her.

"Andrew, are you serious?"

Josie stared at me. She was trying to find any sign of hesitation on my face.

I calmly nodded as if this body didn't belong to me.

"I'm serious. I've already given him one thing. What's one more?

"If I refuse, maybe next time you'll poison me or use some other method to force me to do it anyway, right?"

My words instantly made Josie upset.

She pushed me into her office in frustration.

"What are you trying to imply? If you don't want to do it, just say so. Haven't you always been this selfish anyway?"

In her eyes, everything was just an act."Andrew, are you done? How long are you going to keep pretending? Even if you're suffering, can it compare to what Alex is going through?"At that moment, the nurse taking care of Alex heard Josie's shouting. She looked confused."Mr. Carter is fine. It's just he's been too sexually active. He finally returned to a normal life. If he stresses himself too much, it might undo all the progress from his previous treatment."Josie froze. It was as if she hadn't heard clearly."W-What did you say?"The nurse handed Alex's examination reports to Josie.I didn't know what was written on those reports. But whatever it was, it made Josie almost collapse. She leaned against the wall to stop herself from falling. The nurse turned around and noticed me still receiving an IV drip nearby. "Josie, this is our family matter. It has nothing to do with you."Josie suddenly turned around and glared at me."Why are you treating my kindness like it's worthless? Don't you understand your mother is telling you to give up your life?"Her eyes were red and glistening with tears. This was the first time I had ever seen Josie look like this."You're a mother, and you're willing to take your own son's life. Aren't you afraid of being laughed at?"Faced with Josie's accusations, my mother clenched her jaw."I don't care. Robert's life has only just begun. I raised you, supported you through school, and watched you get married. Robert has never experienced any of that. I can't let him spend the rest of his life like this!"I'm going to find the doctor and schedule the surgery now. He can't wait any longer."Josie couldn't stop my mother. She could only turn back and look at me.Rubbing her temples in exhaustion, she tried to persuade me."Andrew, I already went to talk to th
